Maple Leafs to name Auston Matthews captain

It doesn't appear that he has been stripped of anything. In the OP it states that
"This is part of the evolution of Matthews as a leader and current Maple Leafs captain John Tavares fully supports the change. Tavares has been heavily involved in the process with GM Brad Treliving."
BS. So should Landeskog be stripped of the captaincy because of the evolution of Mackinnon?

This doesn’t happen to great leaders no matter the skill levels. It’s also not like Tavares play on ice is subpar. Hes still a top6 player. This is solely based on leadership.

Tavares has a year left on his contract. To do this a year before he leaves speaks volumes.

Toronto pulling a page out of San Jose's book back in the day of stripping a captaincy from a guy and giving it to another. Worked out so well for them...

What do you mean leaves?

He said he loves Toronto and wants to remain there.

And if there's one thing you can do, it's trust John Tavares at his word.

The only thing that could possibly be sweeter is if Captain Matthews up and leaves after his contract expires in a few years
It will be his right to do so, he will have earned the choice of free agency at that point.

I wonder how this affects Tavares this season in terms of production
His role on the team will have more affect on his production than him transferring the C to Matthews. (duh)

Lmao

He probably ends up signing a cheap team friendly deal if I had to guess. If they even want him at that point. Guess a lot depends on how this up coming season goes

I’ll be sure to bookmark this for 4 years from now

Sure, he does now, but things and circumstances could change. He can choose to become a free agent even if he loves it in Toronto. If an opportunity arises that he feels fits his career and personal life, than he can pursue that opportunity. He might even retire - it really is up to him.

Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Why would anyone do that with hindsight?

Great to see it. Nothing against Tavares the man, but he was not a strong leader for this team. It's now Matthews' to sink or swim with.

I'd like to say this is the dawn of a new era...but it isn't

it's the same players, on the same team, playing the same way

unless Joseph Woll becomes Dominik Hasek we aren't winning much
Even then an all time goalkeeper isn't what it was in the late 90s and 00s

Nothing more than flowery prose to protect ego’s

God this is amazing. Tavares would have been immortalized on Long Island. Now he has the legacy of the guy that went home, couldn’t lead the dream team to success in the playoffs or a cup, and to top it off he embarrassingly gets the “C” taken away.
You forgot to mention how his former team has won just as many playoff series IN TORONTO as he has won in his ENTIRE CAREER

Most overrated player in NHL history and it really isn't close
