No need to put that pressure on Matthews shoulders. Mo is absolutely great with the media and respected amongst all teammates.

To be stripped of the captaincy is completely embarrassing. Especially when it’s been your childhood and life long dream to play for and lead that team. Doesn’t take away from him as a player but definitely is an indictment on his leadership.

If they had confidence in him as captain and a leader then there is no reason to change. If on the other hand the pressure was too much and he requested to have it taken then that speaks volumes as well. Either way it isn’t a good look for Tavares personally.

Respect to the leafs though for doing it.

Marleau I think. Milan Hejduk was the last to transfer the captaincy to a teammate until Tavares officially does it though.
