The article made perfect sense, you're right.
However it wouldn't surprise me one bit if these guys are now purposely avoiding the inflammatory articles considering they've seen first hand what happened to Howard Burger.
Basically what a few of us have been saying around here for awhile now. I guess Cox reads HF as well

With Gillis and Gillman, I'm not worried about the s'cap, I'm more worried about letting Luongo go for nothing.
Like I've said from the beginning, where ever he goes, the Canucks will end up receiving less then they wanted to get, but slightly more then the other team wanted to give up.

To Clarify - trading kessel and Lupul would be a horrible mistake by the leafs, unless we are upgrading the roster. If we continue to trade away talent for picks we'll never entice UFA's to sign here.
Nonnis.
Nonis is a new direction and doesn`t garner the ire of Toronto media,allowing them to think soberly instead of with blind hatred towards Burke.Many of us have been saying Nonnis is in a can`t lose postion,unless he trades for Luongo who brings us close but not into the playoffs.We have a lot pieces who could be traded at the deadline and in Kessel`s case(NMC next year?) may have to be.
Think about this Phaneuff,Kessel(if we have to),Grabo/Bozak,,Macarthur,Komi and Connolly all offered up at deadline.They would get a handsome return to teams desperate to win now.

why would you trade a 25 year old who was 6th in the NHL scoring for a 1st rounder, build around him. Dont do the Luongo trade and keep your young guys, Cox is right. Depending where we are in the playoff race this year yes we may see Lupul moved.

If he has NMC next year,he can walk away for nothing.Why gamble on a guy who may not want to be here? If we can't resign him to an extension now he may get $8 million on the free market.My gut tells me an American who is shy,would rather play south of here with less media attention.He will always be reminded of that Boston trade as Seguin and Hamilton improve.IF Bozak gets traded,he may even follow him.Too risky,resign him or trade him.

As much as I'd love Mackinnon or Jones... I want Reimer to have a good year. It is impossible for Reimer to have a good season and us still receiving a top 5 pick. If we do receive a top 5 pick then that means that we are back to square one in between the pipes. Maybe then, this following year we can grab a proven legit goaltender.

An article by Cox that doesn't make me think he's absolutely crazy. He's actually been pretty good lately.
As for the op though, the thoughts of trading kessel for a 1st round pick seems quite absurd to me. watching him over the past few years, his game has evolved from being nothing more than a sniper, to an actual offensive threat. some of his setups last year were unbelievable.
if he can be held more accountable and work harder in the new defensive system, while still putting up 30-goals a year, this is the exact type of player you hope you can draft with high picks.
i'd be looking at the roster this year and trying to get rid of any pieces that aren't long-term assets that i want to keep. i'd be trading them all away for prospects and picks to playoff bound teams, even if we were on the fringe of perhaps making the playoffs (kind of like last year before the collapse). this team is not a stanley cup contender.
i'd move anyone on the team except: kessel, jvr (high hopes and i'd like to see him get a season to try), gardiner, phaneuf, reilly, kadri. there are a few other prospects i'd rather keep in the system, but they can be expendable

Tim Connolly is a sure fire bet to get moved at the deadline if we're out of it.
Wow, I don't recall a time where I agreed with Cox so completely on one subject. This article has my perspective down to a T.
