Maple Leaf Square

Just an avalanche of people moving here the last few years. No wonder it’s 750,000 for a condo.

Between 2011-2021, the city of Toronto grew by about 21,000 people per year. In 2022 alone, the city grew by 68,000 people. The next year it was 125,000. That's almost five times faster than the average in the decade before.
 
Yup. That’s Toronto. And I’m not saying that in a bad way. It’s the biggest city in Toronto and naturally there is going to development.

I lived on queens quay in from 2008-2012 and during that time we would see condos coming up and slowly blocking up our view of the royal york.

i just wish the city knew how to handle the construction better.

I can remember that area very vaguely from circa 1969 when there was a weird smell eminating from there (a cross between industrial and food factory). If you wondered down to the water, the shore was lined with dead fish. It's much like Yaletown in Vancouver where they've turned a wasteland into upscale housing.
 
Didn’t want to create a brand new topic, but it’s absolutely insane how much this place (and Toronto in general) has changed since they opened the new arena. I almost forgot about everything south of the Gardiner was an industrial wasteland only the last decade.

Before the current wave of development pushed south of the rail corridor in Downtown Toronto, all four corners of the York and Bremner intersection sat undeveloped, providing unobstructed sightlines towards the city's famed Financial District to the north. Back on August 12, 2006, things were just on the cusp of changing though as multiple developments were in the works for the area that would come to be known as the "South Core".

9 years later, and the area has been largely built out with new commercial and residential towers. Two office towers, the Southcore Financial Centre's 18 York and Telus House, now respectively anchor the northwest and northeast corners of the intersection, while still framing a portion of the Financial District skyline. Both buildings are connected to each other as well as Union Station via a new PATH route which includes a bridge running above York Street. Out of view in the image below, the mixed-use Maple Leaf Square development now occupies the southeast corner of the intersection, while the southwest corner has recently been used as a staging area for ÏCE Condos, and will eventually be the site of a new office tower.
