i'm not so sure this is true. if they couldn't move garland or boeser and for some reason value beauvillier then an oel buyout was their only opportunity to create cap room. if they think they can use the 7m in savings this year to get a top 4 dman AND a third line center then it still makes sense to buyout oel (kind of, ignoring all the later cap implications for now) even if you think he'll rebound to some degree

Only opportunity to create cap room without spending assets. Absolutely that is a large part of the equation. I said as much once the news came out. I believe another part is a belief that the likelihood of OEL playing effectively in the top-4 wasn’t there.

All summer I’ve been thinking of Allvin’s comments at the end of year presser. Where he said OEL needed to “sacrifice to get his name back”. If he was able to continue his play from the previous season, or even regress a little, I don’t think this would have even been a conversation with ownership.

OEL when healthy can be a #4. Problem is, he's only going to play 50 games a year, 20 of which he's feeling good. The guy was deteriorating quickly. Betting on LTIR isn't a plan and so they wanted someone reliable in the top 4 to play with Hronek - we'll see who it is.

With OEL it's not a matter of ability it's reliability. He will grab a 3rd pairing role this year and probably play well but that won't change the fact that they made a good choice.

Or a last minute decision after they couldn't trade their wingers.

I don't think there's a last minute 30M dollar decision.

Alvin and co. aren't making the same mistakes as last off season where they underestimated the trade market; and instead probably pitched this to Aquilini a few months ago.

I think the decision to buy him out was very recent..Probably on hearing that salary cap wasnt going up by a predicted $3-4M (only $1M)...and only getting offered anchors for the players they were trying to move to create cap flexibility...They were literally stuck.

A few months ago, they publicly said their would be no buyouts..If they had any inkling back then about buyouts, they wouldn't have said any thing.

I would add that it's the only opportunity to create cap room right now. The hardest time to do so is always going to be right before free agency when teams can get good players for free, then it's after that initial phase that it's easier to move a player.

There's a few factors in play here going into the decision that we fans simply aren't privy to:

1. What is the state of OEL's health and does management believe he could be a #4 D again or not
2. What exactly are the opportunities to clear cap space available to the team, both now and through the summer.
3. What do they have planned (if anything) that they would want/need to have the cap space cleared right now.

Without knowing those things you can get into some pointless back and forth discussion on this.

It's pretty clear from all of the media folks that the Canucks have been working the phones over the past month to shed salary. That was clearly their number one priority. When the prices were too rich, they fell back to plan B. They probably gave it one last shot on June 15, didn't find any takers, then went to Aqua and said "We tried moving salary but the prices are far too much for us and nobody will budge because they know we have no leverage." and the decision was made.

Who cares if a decision to buy out was made quickly or not, it was always an option on the table and I highly doubt this wasn't communicated to Aquilini prior to June 15th.

You think they make snap decisions on the biggest buyout in league history that costs like 20M?
I think they would have let OEL and his agent know beforehand if they could have.

I expect the other shoe to drop real soon. A reaction to some opportunity that came up very recently.

Even if it was a quick decision they could have told him. Its not like they has 30 seconds to make the decision.

I think @God has it right, must be his all seeing powers. They probably had this as a backup plan since the offseason plan was first made, probably had already talked to Aqua about it. Tried plan A, found out that it wasn't going to happen called Aqua and then pulled the tricker.

This makes the most sense to me. Either this, or Frankie originally said no to the buyout and then changed his mind, which does make sense too.

They bought him out the first day of the buyout period way ahead of free agency. There is really no need to give a heads up. Like how much more time do they need to give OEL and agent?

I think they knew they wanted to do it for a little while and got all the approvals and did it the moment the window opened.

I guess you could be right.

Communication within the organization has been problematic so far to say the least. This would be a pretty logical continuation of that.

On the other hand, you don't tell a player he could be bought out and then not buy him out. If my boss said they were thinking about letting me go, and then didn't do it, my mood would be sour.

Why would this be seen as a communication problem. The org has no reason and no benefit to communicate this to OEL and his agent early. Hell doing it the first day of the buyout window is early enough.

It’s not like OEL is some long serving Canuck that deserves respect. He’s basically an anchor since he joined.

It makes perfect sense you would not see it as anything negative.

I do hope that our management regime would take care to utilize OEL's cap space. We do not have much assets, and we do not have much time. Pete will not stand to watch this organization fumble and mumble through its hockey ops in his contractual year. And if Pete is shaken, Hughes won't be far behind.

Yeah, I hope they resist the pressure to #DoSomething now that they finally have cap space, if the UFA market is poor and teams are still hard to deal with, I'd rather we go into the season with a big hole on defence and a ton of cap space so that when a smarter deal opens up, like a team falls out of the playoffs, or is trying to race into the playoffs, or has an injury problem, etc and needs to clear cap space and suddenly is desperate, THEN we should strike and get a good defenceman on good terms. It's going to take more than one off season to turn this team around, keep the powder dry for when an actual opportunity opens up instead of performatively doing something to look like they're doing something.
