If hextall can deliver a big physical LD and move Petts and or Dumo with little money coming back then this is as good a off season as to good contracts AAV wise than the prior regime. Yes I am not in the bring Malkin back camo, but Letand, Rust at 5 AAV and Rakell which to me will drive the first line bigtime is the best roster the Pens have had for next year and maybe a couple after that. Really want the Kap and picks from the D men and a prospect, not Poulin, to go to the Jets for Appleton and Dillon.

Dillon Letang
Matheson Marino
POJ Ruhwedel/Freidman

Jake Sid Rakell
zucker Malkin Rust
McGinn TB Carter
DOC Appleton ?

Jarry
DeSmith
Cap Hit approx 74.5 cap space 8 million

lol you people get the f*** outta here with all that nonsense rn.

Wait until the regular season when the guy turns the puck over harmlessly once or he doesn't backcheck at warp speed or something before ya'll get that troubling vein in your temple bulging accompanied by the usual drywall-punching redfaced visage, eh?

Lol.

I will say that I'm pleasantly surprised by the near universal praise for management for locking Geno up. Sometimes, based on the GDTs during the season, it seems like people here practically want the team to lose in order to say "I told you so." It's nice to see that - when push comes to shove - most fans appreciate Geno and want him here, warts and all, for the rest of his career.

Four more years of dumb penalties, lazy play, & declining skill. Glad to see we blew valuable cap space instead of actually reshaping the roster, to I don't know, get better.

can't disagree with any of this. It's just more of the same which hasn't won a playoff series since 2018. Fans on here don't care about the logo, they care more about who is wearing the logo. Hell, if I knew it would guarantee a Cup, I'd trade anyone on the roster to make it happen...including Sid.
This is the dog that doesn't eat.

I for one cannot wait until the first undisciplined retaliatory penalty Geno takes next year....feels like home. Comfort food.

Haha, seeing Dillon there reminds me of an interview he gave on nhln awhile back. Said he hated the Penguins. Which was cool cause hockey players usually give boring cliche interviews.

I mean... it was a mean piece of negotiation all around by the FO.

I tend to side with HSL and kinda wish that they wouldn't have drug a guy like Malkin along like this until the last second and I think some of it was probably avoidable. But you negotiate two deals in Malkin/Letang that basically pays for Raks simply by virtue of the cap savings and yeah... I would hope people give them their due.

After reading the comments I was begining to think I am the only one who thinks this is a bad move. This was a good opportunity to rid us of Malkin and maybe get a better 2C. Geno was great in his time, but that time has passed. Now we have four more years of him playing 50-75% of the games. Four more years of half-ass play and hot headed decisions costing us games. This has been a one line team for a few years now and i don't see that changing this year. I hope I am wrong, but I see another old and slow team with a first round exit coming this year.

If Geno was still himself he would have carried the team to victory after Sid was taken out in the Rangers series, but he did NOTHING. Sigh.
I really hope you are not a reflection of my future self.

Doesn't that completely go against everything about being a sports fan? I've been a loyal fan of this franchise for 33 years and for me and every true sports fan I know, the love for a team is about the people, overcoming adversity and being inspired.

I know you're not advocating for this but if I imagine a world where the team is completely reset every year, brand new roster, to a man... how would I ever connect on an emotional level with the team? If I imagine swapping our entire roster for another team's at the deadline and the Pens win the Cup... all of the attachment I have to players who have bled black & gold would be sucked out of it. It would be watching a team of strangers wearing a Pens logo win the cup and it wouldn't feel like the Penguins won.

I know these are unrealistic extremes to consider but when people say they want the players to play for the logo on the front and not the name on the back, it's not about making the players faceless, it's about honouring the great performances and careers of past & current Penguins and being part of something bigger than any one person. Bigger than one person, but it's not about being part of something that has no people. It's about the collective of people.

Geno frustrates me a lot too, but I think this was the right move. He is still an offensive threat and most importantly, he's someone that all of the players look up in many ways and draw inspiration, motivation and brotherhood from. They play for him and the other players they lace up with. Continue to take the players' heroes and brothers away year after year and I think you'd find that the soul and that the intangibles of a team go with them. It's like you want this team to be run like a cold, soulless corporate entity that would lay off thousands of loyal employees to make some arbitrary shareholder metric, as opposed to an organization with vision and heart, I just can't understand it.

And if winning is everything for you, you've been spoiled by this loyalty despite openly hating it. These 3 leaders have done something so incredibly rare and unique for this team, and to be a playoff team for 16 years in a row is unparalleled in the cap era. You've seen more winning since these 3 have joined this team than any other fan of any other team... and they are still winning and still performing like stars! This team gets up to play for these 3 legends and they push themselves past their limits for them because they want to be part of this legacy. Anything other than riding this core until they can no longer compete for a playoff spot is the wrong move in my mind... speaking very strictly from the perspective of a devoted fan. I love this team and I love the players who actually love this team as well. This is why I watch and give my hopes and emotional investment to them. I'd rather see this team win with this core than a team full strangers wearing the logo, even if the odds are much longer. If they are a playoff team, they have a chance, and that's what I want to watch.

If you want the team to stop being a one line team then find some damn top six forwards. We still need another one.

You suck Malkin, you can’t produce with Heinen and Kap!

I know how analytics is viewed and whatnot but applicable here:

Geno's rate of passes that create high danger chances last year was right in line with what it has been for most of his career. Yet, shockingly, his assist per 60 was WAY down. It's almost like Geno still had the skill to create 5v5 chances via his playmaking but the chances were not being converted.

I'd say that meshes with the eye test.

He looks kind of sad.

lol poor persecuted Geno Malkin is probably heading to Hot Topic to get some platform boots then smoke cigs in the parking lot while listening to Fallout Boy lol -- tip your server folks and try the liver I'll be using variations of this joke the next 10 years!
That's the saddest anyone has ever looked taking a selfie in a Range Rover.

But keeping Geno vs. "guarantee cup" aren't the options here. The options are:

Geno in 2C @ $6.1M
vs.
[Somebody from this FA class] in 2C
I never said it was an option here, but signing Geno doesn't bring the team any closer towards the ultimate objective of winning said Cup. It's just more of the same.
