Four more years of dumb penalties, lazy play, & declining skill. Glad to see we blew valuable cap space instead of actually reshaping the roster, to I don't know, get better.
can't disagree with any of this. It's just more of the same which hasn't won a playoff series since 2018. Fans on here don't care about the logo, they care more about who is wearing the logo. Hell, if I knew it would guarantee a Cup, I'd trade anyone on the roster to make it happen...including Sid.
Doesn't that completely go against everything about being a sports fan? I've been a loyal fan of this franchise for 33 years and for me and every true sports fan I know, the love for a team is about the people, overcoming adversity and being inspired.
I know you're not advocating for this but if I imagine a world where the team is completely reset every year, brand new roster, to a man... how would I ever connect on an emotional level with the team? If I imagine swapping our entire roster for another team's at the deadline and the Pens win the Cup... all of the attachment I have to players who have bled black & gold would be sucked out of it. It would be watching a team of strangers wearing a Pens logo win the cup and it wouldn't feel like the Penguins won.
I know these are unrealistic extremes to consider but when people say they want the players to play for the logo on the front and not the name on the back, it's not about making the players faceless, it's about honouring the great performances and careers of past & current Penguins and being part of something bigger than any one person. Bigger than one person, but it's not about being part of something that has no people. It's about the collective of people.
Geno frustrates me a lot too, but I think this was the right move. He is still an offensive threat and most importantly, he's someone that all of the players look up in many ways and draw inspiration, motivation and brotherhood from. They play for him and the other players they lace up with. Continue to take the players' heroes and brothers away year after year and I think you'd find that the soul and that the intangibles of a team go with them. It's like you want this team to be run like a cold, soulless corporate entity that would lay off thousands of loyal employees to make some arbitrary shareholder metric, as opposed to an organization with vision and heart, I just can't understand it.
And if winning is everything for you, you've been spoiled by this loyalty despite openly hating it. These 3 leaders have done something so incredibly rare and unique for this team, and to be a playoff team for 16 years in a row is unparalleled in the cap era. You've seen more winning since these 3 have joined this team than any other fan of any other team... and they are still winning and still performing like stars! This team gets up to play for these 3 legends and they push themselves past their limits for them because they want to be part of this legacy. Anything other than riding this core until they can no longer compete for a playoff spot is the wrong move in my mind... speaking very strictly from the perspective of a devoted fan. I love this team and I love the players who actually love this team as well. This is why I watch and give my hopes and emotional investment to them. I'd rather see this team win with this core than a team full strangers wearing the logo, even if the odds are much longer. If they are a playoff team, they have a chance, and that's what I want to watch.
