I just don't see why you keep it this year

We gonna get better production up front? We gonna have as good of goaltending? Next year is almost a lock at being worse
well, if we get the 1st pick would we be able to get a better player than celebrini even if we get the 1oa next year? i don't think so or at least it's not worth taking the chance
edit; it's not how high we pick, but the talent that's available when we pick. and the risk of missing out on a franchise player.

I think it's important to differentiate between if it is reasonable to think they can be better and is it reasonable to think they can contend.

Is it really crazy to think a new coaching staff and swapping Riley Smith for say Tyler Bertuzzi could get the powerplay to be mediocre? That alone might push the Penguins from a top 10 pick to more in the 14th to 18th range.

I wont be mad if they hold the pick or give it away. I am expecting both to be in the 7th to 14th range anyway.

I agree. I hope they let SJ have it.

Devils advocate— seems like the top 10 is all over the place after Celebrini. You could have a real shot at the guy you have rated 2 or 3 at 7-8OA.

I’d still kick it to SJ but I think that’s a reasonable argument.

I mean, yes if it's 1OA you keep it lol you literally can't improve that next year

But people are dating saying to keep it if it's anywhere in top ten and that's not right. There aren't 10 Celebrini's here. #8 isn't gonna do it.

so, does this mean you won't be complaining on these boards if we miss out on a franchise player?
At this point one of these picks is gone. There's nothing to do about it.

I don't think they are so bad that it is guaranteed to be a superior pick next year. If they are picking 7th this year they have to be one of the 3 worst teams in the league next year to guarantee a higher pick in 2025.

I would bet on the Penguins missing the playoffs in 24-25. I wouldn't bet on them being bottom 3 in the league.

ok, the big question now is "how high or should i say low do we need to get before we keep the pick? that's if we can keep our pick until after the lotto. I'm still not sure about when we need to decide on if we keep the pick or move it. it would need to be a great pick to keep it , knowing the next years pick could be 1oa
I posted the lottery chart on the first page of this thread. Any team that finishes 11th or lower can win the lottery move up to 1-3OV. Obviously, the higher up you finish, the worse the odds. So if the Penguins finish 10OV. They could pick at 1-3 or 10-12ov.

Yeah, I’ve said before that if the Pens don’t get a top three pick, they should trade this pick…better group of prospects over all next year and we might not be worse but we’re almost certainly a lottery team next season…

i would agree with this but with the Russian factor, Demidov could easily fall to us. who i think could be that franchise player that we will need in the near future. (having not seen him play)

Even if they get this guy you think Sullivan will actually play him? He'll politic to have Cartkins re-signed while burying this poor kid in the minors for the next 10 years so he can learn how to 2way hockey and PK.

I get where you're going with that but realistically, this team wouldn't hand #4, 5, 6ov to SJS.

I think the only time there's a maybe is at 9 or 10. Otherwise, it's too high of a pick to send out.

We have to be realistic, too, about other teams and how we think they will fare as well. I can't see us finishing bottom 5. Not with Blackhawks, Ducks, CBJ, Arizona, and SJS where they are at. I think the odds are better that we are better next year than this year. Dubas will have another draft and FA to reshape the team again.

I still think there will be coaching changes at the end of year. I can't see how ANY of the assistants survive. No way. Not a chance. Sullivan, SHOULD be gone but who knows.

This isn't a bad team we have. It's not a collection of bad players like other teams have. They are just playing poorly.

That all said, where do you read that there is a better crop of players next year?

Just hearing from draftniks like Button etc that next year’s crop is better

Whatever the decision is re: the 1st rounder, SJ is getting a very good pick more likely than not. I don't think this team's gonna be better next season with one more year on Sid and Geno's shoulders, and with the ship being steered by Dubas and Sully.

If they fall bass ackwards into a top-5 pick this year, I think you gotta keep it. But I think next year's pick has the potential to be another top-10, without seeing what big brained ideas the organization's decision makers have in store this summer.

sadly i whish it was a month ago. then we might be finishing higher so this whole conversation would be mute.

finish in the top 10 and see what happens in the lottery. It is the finished pick that determines who picks. If Pens move up, then, take a RD and with the other picks/prospect continue the rebuild. Like it or not, Pens are moving to a rebuild of the system and will move players after next season for picks/prospects. I see Karlsson, Rust, traded and a decision on Geno after next season. In the meantime, have a sit down with Sid and see what his thinking is. I am not in the camp trading Sid is a bad thing. Sid is a penguin for life but has earned the right to determine his last couple years. Pens traded Yagr, Stevens, Stahl, Murphy and let numerous players go.

In a hypothetical scenario, would you keep the pick if you were guaranteed one of the following players at the position?

  1. Berkly Catton
  2. Zayne Parekh
  3. Carter Yakemchuk

They aren't gonna tell the core "we think you're gonna suck even more next year."

They can spin sending the 2024 out with a simple "Our scouts think 2025 is much deeper after the top X. We think the second half of round 1 in 2025 will net a better player that we can get at 10th overall this year"
