Gonna need more than that to take on Campbell's contract.

Meh. It's less than a $3 mil difference between the contracts. What is the going rate for $3 mil of cap space these days?

The real issue is length, as it certainly conflicts with Grier's timeline for success.

you want to give up a huge cap dump and a 1st for a starting goalie?

Its going to take a smidge more.

Calling Blackwood a starting goalie is a bit generous based on his history, but he has certainly looked the part this year. Objectively it would be pretty good business to turn a 6th round pick valued asset for a 1st round pick in less than 12 months ago. Not sure Blackwood is worth that on his own, but taking on $2.65 mil in cap space certainly sweetens the deal.

Ultimately this trade probably never happens because Grier wants the team to be competing for a playoff spot in 25/26. Would be real nice to have Edmonton's first this year and Campbell would be a premier tank commander for the next couple years.

The difference in their contracts is far larger than 3 mil. More like 11 mil and one year of term compared to three years of term. That is a substantial difference to be paid for by more than just a single 1st. That sort of difference requires two 1st round pick caliber assets to take on when the player is a pure cap dump. That doesn't even include the value of Blackwood at this stage. Granted, that's probably in the range of a 4th round pick but it's not something for the Sharks to scoff at given their rebuild currently.

If the Oilers want to make a deal, they're going to have to either give up two 1st round caliber assets or take more money back. The Sharks can probably work on either way to a degree but they aren't going to do the Oilers, a division rival, any favors. Your sort of proposal would be that. Taking less than market value for cap dumps is just counterproductive.

That is fine to ask for more, and you are probably right the Sharks should/could get more.

Just be careful about walking a 1st round draft pick+ because the Sharks don't get premium value for cap space. The Sharks won't be contenders until Campbell's contract runs out, and a ton of money comes off the books over the next few years.

If they aren't getting market value for cap space, they shouldn't tie themselves down to a long term dead weight contract even if they have them for that duration.
