The wings defence gets significantly worse if/ Maatta is playing Chiarots minutes. Chiarot has been very solid in Detroit outside of one year when his Dad was dying at home

Johansson I noticed had quite a few shifts last game against McDavid or Draisatl and actually held his own. I wonder if that was the "okay lets see what this kid can do" moment. There's interviews from the Griffins last year saying Aljo was their best damn ahead of Edvinsson. Seeing what Edvinsson can do with big minutes makes you wonder what they have in Aljo for sure

Yeah Larkins comments at training camp make me think it was directed directly at Walman. The captain basically says there's players who dont care but that got taken care of in the off-season. I'm sure that wasn't a shot at Perron when he said that
Chiarot, by nearly every metric has been one of the worst defensemen in the league since joining Detroit

I mean it is an okay trade for a tanking team. Are the Red Wings going to tank now ? Not a great signal from SY to the team early in the season.

Remember this trade when the Wings don't make the playoffs and the blame goes to the D. As it always does. Can ya try and improve the team now Stevie ?

If you trade a UFA 8 games after he signs with you, what message are you sending to other UFAs in the future? Gus was never a viable option for this.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Detroit would be actively shopping a guy they just signed. Just that purely from a performance vs contract standpoint, Maatta isn't the worst defenseman on the team.

Or to put it another way, the worst boat anchors don't tend to get traded first because other teams don't want them either.

Not sure how this became a Holl thing. Seems like the forums turned into taking pot shots at everyone’s favorite targets.

I love AlJo and have been rooting for him for a couple of seasons now but he is what he is. He’s a good depth D who’s hopefully going to be really nice, age-well, middle pair LHD who can flex to the right if needed and can mesh with a handful of styles. He is basically … Olli Mattaa with functioning legs and a bit more of a shot.

Mattaa was rendered redundant by AlJo and it was kind of obviously in the handful of games he had slowed down even more and even directly paired with AlJo, the difference in their speed and ability was pretty obvious. A lot of the qualities I liked in Mattaa, AlJo has so it was an easy trade in bottom pair LHDs. We didn’t need two of them.

Holl isn’t the question here, who’s taking 2nd pair RHD minutes and doing… okay. Swapping back and forth with Petry, etc. the issue is both of them are fine 3rd pair, neither is sufficient at 2nd. I don’t think that’s either of their faults.

It’s why I still hope that AlJo can work with Seider as a smart, positionally sound LHD who complements Seiders talent, and we can move Ed back to pair with Holl in pair two to find some balance in the top 4 instead of overloading the top pair and playing Russian roulette with the remaining pieces. Chiarot / Petry is not bad as Pair 3 and should do pretty well and have a history together from the Habs. Gus a depth and PP only really.

Still missing a true shutdown 2nd Pair RHD and hopefully we’ll be close enough at the trade deadline where we can get one and bridge for a year or two.

All and all, a nice move

That's another way to phrase that, yeah.

Steve: As I mentioned at the Four Nations' tournament, I want to chat with you about XYZ.

Agent: Steve, thanks for expressing interest in XYZ. I was expecting you to inquire about his services.
Off the top, I wanted to let you know that we chatted about Detroit as a destination last week. XYZ took notice of you trading Gus eight games after he signed a multi-year contract with you and moved his family to Michigan last year. You can see why that might not sit well with my guy. Anyways, before we go any further, I need you to know that my guy will be requiring a NMC or a NTC. Otherwise we will need another million per year and four years instead of three.

Steve: Hey, this is a business, you know that.

Agent: Enjoy Justin Holl

Oh... so Holl's agent has a time machine? And he still picked Detroit knowing that Petry would come to town and he'd be benched most of the year? Sounds like a failure during due dilligence...

See below.

If people actually paid attention to games and didnt just get ideas in their heads, they would realize he was actually solid last year. No metrics say he was bad last year at all. His first season when his Dad was dying and he was playing top pair with Mo, sure he was bad. But you havent paid attention since
Good old BS

Maata got traded because his was really the only moveable bottom pair contract. (Unless we are attaching 2nds and 1sts to the deal)

I'd argue he is probably better than the rest of the bottom pair guys but not so significantly that keeping him and paying to move another guy made sense.

Holl was a buyout or waive option. No one is touching him at that salary and contract length without him showing he can be an NHL dman for a full season. He's started off better this year but I still expect him to be bought out this coming summer. Holl also has an NTC....

Gus was just signed so he wasn't likely to be dealt. I could see someone taking him on a 50% but its not a great precedent. Stevie is probably wanting to maintain retention spots though because if we bomb out we'll get a lot more out of retaining on a guy like Kane or Chiarot than a bottom pair dman.

Petry has a modified NTC and has no reason to want to leave Detroit. Also they see him as a top 4...
