This shameless shilling of the 50/50 is kind of embarrassing. Is OEG losing that much money?

Others have covered but will add. This is pretty standard Corporate Social Responsibility strategy to communicate your philanthropic work giving back to the community in which you do business. It enhances reputation, helps with employee recruitment and retention, and other business value.

OEG is a big business that very effectively leverages its relationship with the public to get a highly subsidized office aka rink built. The 50-50 draw is a great way they don't necessarily give back directly but leverages customers to give with the 50% of pooled money to the winner. Oilers like other corporate foundations gain reputational value of donating the other half of customer 50/50 dollars to a variety of their charitable partners. Pretty impressive pools of money prized out through the generosity of the public buying 50-50 tickets.
