I really like that comparison. Still can’t believe how intrigued I am about a 3rd round prospect.
The team saying they had a first round grade on him helps the intrigue.

Was that just the stats side, or whole scouting department?

They said the analytics guys said they clocked him as a first round talent and then the scouts said their viewings backed it up. I’m assuming the numbers guys presented him as someone worth getting more eyes on and then the eyes backed it up when they did.

16. Viktor Neuchev, RW

18 years old | 6-foot-2 | 165 pounds | Shoots left

Drafted: No. 74 in 2022
Tier: Projected to play NHL games

Skating: Below NHL average
Puck skills: Above NHL average
Hockey sense: Below NHL average
Compete: Below NHL average
Shot: High-end

Analysis: Neuchev doesn’t have the stats and accolades of top prospects, but when you watch him it’s easy to see the NHL potential. He’s 6-foot-2, he has great hands, and shows great offensive creativity as a handler and passer. Neuchev often showed high-end ability to improvise with the puck and create chances from nothing. He can make some plays but his shot is his real offensive threat as he often scored from the circles. His drawbacks are subpar footspeed and not being great off the puck, with a decent amount of perimeter play. Despite those issues he’s so talented offensively that I have to imagine there is a spot on an NHL team for him, even if not in a prominent role.

To me the only head-scratcher is why pass on him in the 2nd if you've got him graded as a 1st?

The short answer is that they valued getting what they deemed the top goalie in the draft more. They said they talked about taking the goalie in round 1…which means that would have probably been the result if Kulich didn’t fall since they were so focused on him The second half of the round.

They also probably figured most teams didn’t have him as high combined with the Russian factor maybe taking guys off some teams lists gave him a good chance of being there

That shot reminds me a lot of Paul Kariya’s wrister
I see the Sabres long term plan to roll lines of guys who can rip it from this distance and drive analytics people mad while screaming about unsustainable shooting percentage. With what they look for in shooters I half jokingly wonder if they think they’ve discovered the three point shot Revolution in the NBA for hockey. Get plus shooters and have them rip it from here over and over and over. Mitigate some of the percentage because of the quality of shooter…and because you get more shots because you aren’t cycling down low as much.

Im only partially kidding. They love this shooter from this area.

If they aren't wicked shots, they're puck chefs slingin beautiful dishes all over the ice. I guess you need both.
