Did he record an assist? Just wondering in case I got the wrong info cuz no one here says anything about it!
It's weird but tbh I'm getting to the point where I'll be disappointed if the Leafs don't select Matthews
If he didn't get an assist on that play they need to fire the statistician of the game. It was a clear secondary assist.Did he record an assist? Just wondering in case I got the wrong info cuz no one here says anything about it!
One of the telling signs of maturity is how one deals with adversity, specifically when it’s admittedly self-inflicted. It was just over a year ago when a frustrated, 17-year-old Patrik Laine flipped Finland’s National Team coach Mika Marttila the bird during a game against the Czechs. He also reportedly issued him physical threats, thus leading to his expulsion from the 2014 Hlinka tournament after only three games. Since then, however, he’s done nothing but crush the opposition while maintaining a seemingly mature outlook and approach. Laine’s become the best power winger prospect in the Finnish Elite League, and all before his 18th birthday. He’s a big-bodied scoring threat with a devastatingly accurate wrist shot and a penchant for eluding detection, so when you combine the two, you get the desired result. From a skating perspective, he’s shown an improved stride, which allows him to go zone-to-zone in a hurry. But what’s been most impressive about his Liiga campaign beyond burying the puck has been the accuracy of his passes off the rush. Laine’s been dominating both his peers and those slightly senior in age for a while now, and by that we mean both physically and statistically. And though he was slotted behind countryman and fellow-2016 draft eligible Jesse Puljujarvi in most pre-season draft rankings, his early-season domination of a men’s league coupled with the aforementioned Puljujarvi’s concurrent struggles should continue to shift pre-draft rhetoric towards Laine’s corner. We think he’s the best winger in the draft, and the closest among any amateur draft prospects to becoming a regular in the NHL.

Stumbled across this when looking up some scouting reports. Silly thing to do, obviously, but it made me laugh. Haven't seen a player flip his coach the bird on the bench before, I don't think.
A new comparison struck me yesterday watching Laine. Offensively, I would say he has the potential to be an impact winger as a young Jaromir Jagr had.
He has that type of charisma and offence to his game.

That's weird, Jagr has actually been used as a comparable for Puljujarvi more than Laine.
Laine is Tarasenko for me.
I'd say Laine has Alex Semin's skill set but plays the game like Ovi. He'll never have the first 3 strides Ovi has that makes him so deadly and he'll never have the vision of Mario Lemieux or Jagr. He's a great prospect, but in regards to production he's more likely to end up in the Rick Nash/Cory Perry territory, and if he hits his ceiling in the Kovalchuk/Heatley area.I see Rick Nash in Laine. He is big, skilled and primarily a goalscorer. As for Pulju... Maybe Hossa or Wheeler?

Puljujarvi's unique. A better skating Wheeler may be it. He's big and can skate like Kovalchuk, but he doesn't quite have the puck control or shot to be a 50 goal guy.
Nash can't shoot, though.
Yep. Ovie is beast of a skater.
Well he could back when he was good.
Maybe, but he has always used his stickwork to get up close more for his goals, I think. From what I've seen, his one-timer, for example, hasn't really been his bread and butter.
No player is identical. Obviously Laine has the shot (btw, so does Teemu Pulkkinen) but he will never be the skater that Ovechkin is. Also Laine seems less physical than Ovechkin and you almost never see those big hits.
I haven't said he is like Ovechkin, though. As I too have said previously in some threads, he isn't Ovechkin in my opinion either. I see him as a regular 35-40 goalscorer with maybe 50 during his peak years but not regularly. Regardless, I think Nash plays a different game than Laine does, so I don't agree with that particular comparison, even though I think TSN also did. The way they score their goals is very different.
I don't see Tarasenko either, mainly because of the size. Laine is his own player, yeah you could say he plays like a poor man's Ovechkin but also less physical. Nash was just the first that came to my mind.
Maybe... just maybe he can hit 50. You never know.
You can't teach that shot.
