So I just heard about this guys story. Amazing that he picked up ice hockey so fast. For all you who watch, how is he? His point totals according to elite prospects aren't amazing, but not too terrible. Is this guy an NHL talent?

Right now he probably has a chance at being a first rounder in 2018, but more likely in a 2nd rounder.

The big issue which no-one knows the answer to at this point is what is going to be done about his mandatory military service. Without that having a clear resolution that involves him not going it will significantly damage his stock. No one is going to take a kid who is good but not elite and has to miss two years to military conscription high.

How is he doing this year? Looks like his stats have somewhat stagnated, is his game stagnating or has there been improvement?

I remember reading about his but didn't realize it was possibly two years.

There's no exemption for something like this?

I actually believe Israeli's mandated service is 3 years for all men. However, Levin stands a good chance of being granted exception or postponement because he resides abroad and is a high-level athlete. People tend to forget but Finland also has a mandatory military service of 6 months, which plenty of NHL players have completed.

Even if he is granted exception, this is all speculation because there's no evidence that he wouldn't actually want to serve his country. It's something that nearly all of his childhood friends and family will have completed, so it'll be interesting to see how important it is for him.

If he wasn't chosen by Sudbury he'd probably develop into a top 10 pick. At this point he's outside of the first round imo, disappointing.

Doubt it, he went 1st because he was willing to report. Villardi and Tippett were notably better in their draft year, strong argument also for Ryan McLeod. While I don't think Sudbury helped, I don't think his skill set likely makes him a likely top 10 pick.

While it's true that he wasn't a clear #1 in his draft year, he was ranked first overall by thescout.ca. Lots of people liked him over Tippett and Villardi.

I tend to trust the HockeyProspect guys more, who had him behind Tippett, Vilardi and McCloud in that order. I've also heard Sudbury didn't have much of a choice. None of those 3 would have reported.

From my understanding, military conscription is highly in Israel expected and suggested of you even as an athlete from Israel but there are exemptions and ways to delay (that could lead to exemption). One of my neighbors growing up was born in Israel and had Division I NCAA basketball interest. He was told he could likely have it pushed back or receive an exemption if he got a scholarship offer but he chose to go back anyway and serve his time mostly because of the pressure put on him by his family.

Deciding factor there could be Levin's parents. Neither one of them is actually from Israel, so it's definitely possible they don't care whether he does it or not and they may even decide that a permanent relocation to North America is the best thing for their family.

Also, I preferred him over Tippett and McCloud but not Vilardi for for whatever it's worth

You're right I'm sure he wouldn't want to renounce his citizenship but there's also typically an exception for expats from my understanding. Especially if they're established with a career by the time they're asked to serve their time. David would be.

NHL Central Scouting Midterm Ranking has him at 183 for North American skaters. Not exactly a high spot right now, though he's been injured recently.

In terms of pure puck skills and talent, he’s right up there with Dahlin in my books. I’ve largely given up on him improving in the other areas that he’ll need for a long career in the NHL, though.

Ranked #183 in Central Scouting's final ranking, and he was not invited to the Combine. Do people still think he will get drafted? I would probably take a flier on him in round 6 or 7.
