Big bucks in Russia is declining big bucks. Ruble isnt doing very well. Kovalchuck left a LOT of money on the table going back home.

Nonetheless, the Hawks and fans are extremely happy he chose Chicago.
you are speaking about ska and gazprem here? if so, some line need to be drawn between them and the rest of the country.
i'm a bit skeptical of his perspectives there, but the guy sacrificed a lot of dough to play in the nhl, that's for sure.

How does he compare to other guys who recently came from the KHL (Sekac, Lehtera, etc)?

Friedman said in his 30 thoughts that Calgary came closest, so I doubt that was his reasoning.

He wanted to go to a team with a track record of giving smaller players opportunity, Chicago has that.

Geez...how come he's not a Montréal Canadiens? Our 1st line C is 5'5''....

The whole line Panarin - Shipachyov - Dadonov looks ridiculous. 20 goals in 15 games combined (Panarin has played just 13 games). And 45 points combined. Would be interesting to see them as the line in the NHL.

But first WHC. I hope they will tear it up.

Interesting, but probably disappointing. The skill translation between NHL and KHL is super weird (e.g. Nigel Dawes and Dustin Boyd, two complete washouts at the NHL level, are top 15 in KHL scoring).

His stats are better than Lehtera's, and Sekac wasn't anything special in the KHL.

I know his NHL equivalency is really high but I'm trying to keep my expectations low for him. Is it possible he puts up 70ish points in a couple seasons or is that pretty unrealistic?

I think both just had really bad situations in the NHL/werent used properly. Both could of been 2nd line players or secondary scoring options. Theres similar players who had similar stat lines and were second liners when they got the right opportunity and situation

It's hard to say. I think 50 pts in his first season will be a good results. As to his upside, I guess, he can be a 70 point two-way player.

Nigel Dawes was really good, seriously.

agreed. He was awesome in junior and I liked him in NHL and had potential. I am very surprised he never made a successful NHL career. Oh well I am sure he is loving life making good coin in KHL

Where would Panarin be drafted in 2015 draft?

I'm curious what everyone thinks about where Panarin would be drafted if he was draft eligible for the 2015 draft. Would he be a late first, or maybe an early 2nd?

Why was Panarin never drafted. In his draft year he scored 8 points in 20 games in the KHL which is very impressive. You would think even if he was 5'5, 140lbs and had an awful attitude and no desire to come to the NHL he would still merit at least a 7th round pick.

Age notwithstanding, as in were he amongst his peers...and producing what he just did in the KHL?

I mean...Wouldn't that be a top 3 overall worthy season?

In a Johan Franzen scenario, he's...I would still use a 20-30 pick on him. He looks very very impressive from any vantage point.

Uh this is kinda pointless he's born in 92 being in a draft class with 97. If he was the same age but still same talent and scoring the same he would be top 5 easily. He had more points than Kovalchuk

He's a lot older than the rest of the candidates...kind of impossible to do this. What are Eichel, Strome, Werenski and company going to look like after 5 more years? That's the advantage he'd be at doing this.

From what i understand he was never drafted because his KHL team wasnt well regarded among scouts or something. Not a lot of people watched him

I think the op means where he would be drafted if he were drafted aged? Or based on his draft year? Where he should of been drafted?

Panarin is 2010 eligible. Why ask about 2015? As to 2010, I think after season or two in the NHL, he'll be considered as a sure top10 pick for that amazing draft. I think his potential is on par with Scwartz'.

I agree that probably mid-1st..

Curious if this would be his draft year. Would he be in tier with McDavid and Eichel?

This is easily the much better question

Where would Panarin go in a 2010 re-draft?

Imo he would at least be a clearcut 3rd if he was 18 and had the same stats. How many 18 year olds put up over a point per game in a top end professional league like that? Very very few. I can think of Barkov being close to ppg off the top of my head but no one else comes to mind right away.

Even if he was 18 he wouldn't be going top 5. He's a Russian born player playing in the KHL. No team is drafting that top 5 and I'm not even sure someone would take him top 10 given his physical tools.

How many draft picks are ready to step into a top-6 role? Usually only a few, if that. This draft has 2 potential generational players so most likely McDavid and Eichal are starters on Day#1, but beyond them - how many of the next tier are ready for a full time role in the NHL? No one knows, but it's usually not more than a few. Panarin would seem to fit in that second tier after McEichal. He may be ready for the NHL, he may not. But IMO he is in that #3-#8/#10/#?? range, and is probably less of a crap shoot than usual draft picks because he's been playing against men in the KHL for 5 years rather than the 17 and 18 year old kids in Juniors.
