He’s worth a 2nd for a contender. Hell if we could dump Tyson Barrie I’d pay a 2nd for physical bottom pairing RD on a cheap contract like his.

I could see Buffalo offer 1 of Pilut, Fitzgerald, or Bryson and a 6th for Schenn
Smallish, 25ish year old defenders with limited league experience are something that we have no interest in, largely because we have been hoarding them the last few years. Three of the four posters above you just stated a 2nd round pick would be a fine cost for Schenn, so I'd be looking to start around there.

2nd is probably fair. 1st is too much, 3rd not enough. He is a big piece of our team, and far better than most who don't follow the team would assume.

My favorite player we've had since Bieksa.

4th round pick Is probably close market value for comparable players. Could see him getting a 3rd if the D man market stays tight
Ehh when Chiarot got a 1st+4th, Manson got a 2nd + prospect, and Middleton got Kahkonen (worth a 2nd or 3rd probably) + 5th, I'd say Schenn's value lies somewhere between a 1st or a 2nd.

He's been fine as a top 4 d man on Vancouver, and on a contender is the perfect bottom pair d-man that can move up in case of injury.

Love what he has brought to Van, but he needs to be moved. I'd press for a 2nd, but would settle for a 3rd+ if it came down to it.

It's beyond me why some Canuck fans want to hang onto him, when those same people say Miller doesn't fit our timeline to compete, yet Schenn is older and somehow fits...?? Or better yet, when they say we would have no realistic replacement - like who F'in cares when we aren't making the playoffs anyway! He won't re-sign in Van for dirt cheap anymore, knowing how big of a role he would play here... then the decline likely hits him hard and we have another bad contract for a depth player.

Fact is, he's at the age where Van should absolutely trade him, and we need all the future assets we can get. It would be another strike against this management group if they can't get something in return.

Though Chiarot was also getting 20+ minutes a night last year, Schenn averages even with the Canucks under 17ish min atoi which is closer to bottom pairing territory than top 4.

I suspect Schenns closer to having around the same value as Lyubushkin did when he was with Arizona.

He also got 10 or fewer minutes per night, part time mind you, during his much ballyhooed run with the Bolts.

We're not talking about an essential piece for a good team here.

In six weeks Schenn goes from borderline NHLer to worth at least a 2nd round while playing on the a team that is compeletly underachieving. Lol.

Yeah contenders are gunna be all over this gem.

I used to tell myself Ian White is a top four defenseman.

Tampa hasn't won a cup since he left.

In all seriousness, Schenn would offer a cost-effective, shrewd depth pickup. Physicality - good on PK... A great addition for a team poised for a run, shoring up a bottom pairing or depth option.

Can't see the talk of a 2nd round pick as a return but could see a 3rd & 5th or some combination of a 3rd+

Schenn has really elevated his career in Vancouver. He will get a 2nd from a contender at deadline
He sure has an interesting career trajectory. Hot shot prospect, to young bluechip with too high of expectations, to failed prospect nearly finding himself out of the league, to mature, grizzled, back to back cup winning veteran.

6 weeks ago he was a borderline NHLer? According to who?
People who still think he is as bad as he was after he left Toronto.

he's playing brilliantly within his role. this is his second stint with the canucks where he has been a perfect fit and elevated his game. he is also the only meat and potatoes hardman with size on the team.

given his salary i am not sure i'd trade him unless we were going for a rebuild.

not directed solely at you but i've always hated the discussion around what qualifies someone to fit in what descriptor

some guys who are objectively on the bottom pairing at ES play tons of minutes on 2nd pk/ against opponent bottom sixes (myers prior to the last two years really fit this). now myers has played less the last two seasons than what he would generally average in wpg, but in a bigger role that he is not qualified for - do you go by his role or simply minutes?

there's other guys who play top pairing ES who play harder minutes

there's a lot of nuance w this. i think people get too tied into this stuff. one day, hockey roles and positions won't be seen as conventionally and there won't be debates about what classifies x and y

even QH is an interesting one. Hughes is one of the best D in the league (not this season but yeah) - but on a cup winning team, there's probably a d-pair like Hamhuis-Bieksa playing the hard minutes ahead of him even if he leads the team in ice time. if he's not playing those hardest minutes, is he technically a #1? or do you go by role? even then, who cares? Carolina replaced dougie hamilton with deangelo and put him in positions to succeed and reallocated some of DH's other minutes. DeAngelo is not as good but the team basically had the exact same performance.

end rant

A 3rd feels fair, but at that point, does Van just keep him?
This would be my feeling on it. Schenn plays well with Hughes, can play down the line up on a different pair if needed. He is physical, does small things like sticks up for teammates, clears the front of the net, etc., all while making $850k a year. If someone wants to over pay (a 2nd in my opinion is an over pay) then sure move him, but if its to get a 3rd or worse, just keep him for what he is, a low maintenance RHD making almost league minimum.
