If the Habs are taking Lucic and Sekera contracts off the Oilers hand, we are not eating any salary on Patch. If this is how you want to negotiate, we should stop now cause we have no base for a deal.
Oilers don't want or need the Habs to take Sekera. Just Lucic. So yeah, something Lucic++ for Patches

Lucic and the 10th pick for Patch is something I would consider for a base to a deal. But I'm not retaining salary on Patch in any situation. I think the Oilers want the Habs to add and that's where the negotiation starts.... Lucic and Patch had disappointing seasons but Patch >> Lucic. I expect rebound years from both players but Lucic's skating in a league that is getting faster really does hurt his value. The Habs are interested in the 10th pick so both the Oilers and Habs need to get creative to make each other happy.

There is a deal to be done there I think if both parties work hard at not trolling each other in player values.

Yeah I agree with that. I think something like Lucic + 10th + 2018 3rd for Patches is a deal both team could get behind

Believe it or not, the Habs would have $7M in cap space after this trade is made and we are still able to sign all our RFA's. You want to unload salary and give us futures, while we give you Patch. We can talk

Send the memo out now... Habs have Patch and Cap space as trade chips. But we want futures. Serious futures.

Do you really think Bergevin is going to pull off something like this without screwing it up?

I don't value Patches highly. Oilers already dumped Eberle at $6M/yr. If Oilers aren't getting cap relief and sending a 10th across the player HAS to be better than Patches... and definitely better than Eberle or what's the point. Might as well keep the 10th.

Okposo+Bogosian+#32 for Sekera+Lucic+#10

Change Sekera for Russell and retain $1.5M on Okposo and it's closer. I still like Sekera and think he can be useful.

The jump from #32 to #10 is maybe worth two late firsts (by pure value).

Sekera struggled with injuries, but he's still a solid defenseman IMO and worth his cap hit.

The real problem though is that even IF the Oilers wanted to move them (and I'm not sure they do), both Sekera and Lucic chose to sign in Edmonton and both have a full NMC for this year. I doubt they are waiving it to go anywhere, much less to a bad team.

Next year Sekera must give a list of 8(?) teams that he's willing to go to. More then likely none of those teams will have tons of cap space just to take him on line that

The OP isn't even an Oilers fan. To dump Lucic and Sekera (who I don't consider a dump) with the 10th... I'd like a better player(s) overall with less cap hit.

I'd want Petry @ 50% and Chucky @ 50%

I don't care who he's a fan of, I'm going by his post. His goal is to reduce cap space by replacing high salary players with cost-controlled players. I believe this is self-evident.

Ok, to create real cap space... lets' say you sign Patches to $6M/yr for 5 years and eat 50% of his salary.

Patchs @ $3M/yr for 5 years for Lucic and 10th.

That's the only deal that fits within your logic of "cap space to the Oilers"

Not true the talk was Sekera and Lucic but even if you consider Lucic at his best and Patches at his best at the same cap hit it creates better use of the cap by having a goal scorer like Patches over lead foot Lucic . Cap space is not limited to having 20 million of cap space . Cap space will get used by owners who want to win . Katz is a owner that will spend so if a useless player is gone and a usefully player comes in it would be logical 6 million crap contract it create the "cap space" to take on the good contract .

I agree on lots of what you said . Patch has less hard miles on his body . If I was betting I would bet for Patch to rebound over Lucic altho I think both will rebound . Lucic shooting % was way below his normal . Having said the above I don't move Lucic until later next season and only if he hasn't rebounded . Also if I agreed to Patch for Lucic and the 10th I would want to know Patch is back to his normal and that won't be known until next year . Plus I would want a contract agreed to by Patch before the trade was made

Right. For Patches to agree to a contract that means July 1st... so the pick can't be 2018. I just don't see Patches being traded this draft. A 17G scorer isn't in high demand with all the wingers in UFA.

And did everyone forget about NMC of Lucic and Sekera (except one or two people).

I don't see how Okposo with that contract of his is anything more than marginally more valuable that Lucic.

Sekera for Bogosian is a swap where the Sabres would have to add considerably so I don't really see what's in this trade for Edmonton.

Sideways at forward, severe downgrade on defense and on the draft pick.

Keep Lucic
Use the 10th
Pray cap keeps going up and hope we can get a buyout in the next CBA discussion in 2021

If Patches would consider resigning for ~7-7.5m I would do the 10+Looch for him

Not sure why you are talking about the 2018 pick . I clearly state I would to make the trade until I see if the players rebound . If both players rebound I wouldn't pay anything t move Lucic . A 50 point Lucic brings lots to a team and is worth 6 million

So the OPs idea is the Oilers create all this cap space to what.... go out and sign other highly expensive free agents that are almost guaranteed to not live up to their contracts?

I'd consider Patches for Lucic+10OA+ if Kotkaniemi is available. We already have a bottom four LHD logjam, paying Sekera for three more years sounds absolutely stupid to me, he can still play and would serve a much better purpose on some other team so he has better value than a pure cap dump which the Habs would see him as. Lindgren and the 2nd round pick are both valuable for the future, why get rid of them when we shouldn't need to?
That would be a good move for move teams IMO

So instead of making cap space, which I think is the entire point of this thread, the Oilers end up with less cap space?

I don't know if the Oilers need to make cap space to the tune of $11 million or not but this adds $1-1.5 million to their payroll.

Edmonton must be getting some value back.

Sekera is much better than he looked last year. Had no training camp and recovered from a big injury. Everyone knows he'll be much better next year. He's a fringe #2 d-man at times.

So Sekera IMO has value and 10th overall has value and Lucic probably has negative value, so Edmonton needs to be getting a viable #4 d-man back in this deal.

From the Habs perspective, I would be willing to take on the bad contracts and offer Patch and other pieces. My initial offer would be Patch, Lindgren, Schlemko, and a 2nd round pick. In this deal, the Oilers save almost $5M in cap space. Puts them at 16 players signed with $20M in cap space. Gives them a lot of wiggle room to make other moves to improve their roster.

Guys like JVR, De Haan, Kovalchuk, Grabner.

Not sure Bergevin makes a move like this but I prefer the Habs to target futures and we have tons of cap space. So adding Lucic and Sekera is no big deal for us. The value for the Habs is the 10th pick.
From another Habs fan, that is too much. Could deal Max for a pick around 15-17th alone. Difference between 10 to 15 isn't worth taking on 12 million in bad contracts.

Take Max out of proposal, I would probably do thou. Lindgren is a decent young goalie. Schlemko is a bottom pairing d-man but with better contract than Sekera. What 2nd you offering? So, Oilers give up the 10th, for 12 million in cap space and Lindgren, Schlemko and 35? Or Hawks 39? Leafs 56? Caps 61st or 62?
