Lucic would be fine at 5-6 years about 5 million a year.

The problem is, he most likely will not sign a contract like that. Lucic will ask for top dollar, and a long term contract. Nothing wrong with that, except the Kings can't afford to give it.

If the Kings are willing to go 6, why not go 8 years if the AAV is around 5? Even Doughty will be 32 after 6 years, and its unlikely a 36 year old Carter and 34 year old Kopitar will be dominating down the middle. Quick will be 35, Muzzin 32, Martinez 34, etc.

That's also when the CBA comes up for renewal. Throw in an expansion draft or two in there to potentially lose a bloated contract, and 8 years is a no brainer if it keeps the AAV low. I doubt it ends up at 5, but the Kings could stay under 6 and still compete with other bidders. A 6M max contract is the same as 7 years at 6.86M.

Because @ 6 those last year or two would be ****ing brutal. And your talking about taking those years of cap abuse and effectively doubling down and saying if the last 1 or 2 will be bad... Why not add on two more?!

Because I want to continue watching the Kings, and seeing them be decent at hockey, not just being a team strangled by contracts of guys who were good.

I would expect those years to be brutal, but what are the odds of the Kings being anything decent by then? The core is going to be old, and there isn't anything of that caliber in the system. The assets to get impact players are gone, the proverbial load has been blown. There's a chance that lightning is struck in the draft, but those odds are terrible.

The Kings are going to suck anyways, I am on board with going all in and not worrying about the seasons in the 2020's. Lots can change by then, might as well maximize the chance to win now. Hell, there might be a 2 year lockout, no one knows.

I'm with Fish. I'd rather the Kings burn brightly then crash into the earth like a meteor than be like the Blues who are always "good" but never great. The Cup window is only truly open for cores who have actually climbed through it. Is it really open for teams otherwise? How do you know if they never win it? Eventually a team will break through and end the Kings/Blackhawks stranglehold, but it becomes a monumental task when either of those 2 teams are in the hunt. Be the hunter, not the hunted.

Great news!!! Get it done Lombardi!!!! Lucic is looking like he really enjoys playing on the team.

With King/Lucic/Merch/Nolan, the Kings could run a 230 pounder on each line.

Plenty of ways to cut cap if needed, Brown, Lewis, Greene.

I don't see cap ever staying the same let alone drop, until the next lockout. i heard its projected to be 75 at this point in time. Look to move Greene first if he can't go on LTIR. Yes, he's a great locker room guy, but it's not like everyone else is cancer in there, can't be spending 2.5 million for a psychiatrist. You don't move a guy like Martinez for cap space. One of Gaborik/Brown would have to go, and hope the incoming expansion team(s) takes the other.

I'm not expecting the cap to rise. And even if it does it'll be so marginal that it'll only make a difference at the trade deadline or for some fourth line depth player. I'm expecting 6 figures max.

I'd keep Gaborik over Brown if it got to that. It would be very, very tough though. Brown means so much to this franchise.

Look at the teams that have won multiple Cups in a short amount of time over the last few decades. Montreal has never been as good as in the 70's. The Oilers and Islanders have obviously struggled after the 80's. The Pens with Lemieux and Jagr couldn't manage to get more than the 2. The Wings, Avs, and Devils aren't what they used to be.

The 2 in 3 years, or maybe 3 in 5, it's never going to be this good to be a Kings fan again, more likely than not. No matter what they do. No matter who the GM is. No matter what players they have. The Kings have a proven group here, so it's go for it every year as best you can. There's plenty of time to not win Cups 5+ years from now. Get as many as you can as quickly as you can.

If Mersch sticks with the club, I'd look for DL to move King and even possibly Pearson.

Move them for what though?

There isn't much to be gained in terms of cap relief by moving either one of those guys, and both of them do their jobs very well.

People that think that the cap is going up by any amount that is substantial are likely to be disappointed. Oil just sunk again, this time to under $36/barrel. I'm guessing that in terms of Canadian tar sands that the price of oil is approaching the point where it makes sense to slow or stop production in some areas.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/oil-sands-producers-struggle-1440017716

More than half of current oil-sands production can’t break even unless WTI crude-oil prices rise above $44 a barrel, according to a TD Securities Inc. report published Wednesday.

I think Dean would be wise to delay signing any players to long-term, high-AAV contracts. Now, if the AAV is right, and fits the Kings' cap situation with the expectation that the cap will not increase, by all means do it.

Well, their cap combined equals 3.5M, which would help in re-signing Lucic. Also, they both can be added to perhaps Gabby or Brown's deal to increase the value of the trade.

Stop it with the Marty trade talk. The guy is clutch and close to irreplaceable on this team. I'm all for signing Looch, but not at the expense of Martinez.

Bravo I am with you. Marty/Muzzin has been very solid this year. Our top four could well be set for years to come.

You're talking about a lot of cap space acquired by the other team if you're adding Gaborik or Brown. Probably too much. If you're moving Pearson, try for a 1st round pick or something.

Re: trading Brown

I was under the impression the Kings didn't have any NTC/NMC but I was just scanning general fanager and saw they list Brown with NMC and Quick with NTC. If that's true, I think we all should expect Brown to finish his career in LA.

I noticed that too.
Limited NMC. Brown can name 8 teams he will not accept a trade to. Now I wonder if he can do that after the Kings have come to agreement with a certain team or before (hypothetically).

Quick's details are not known for anybody.

If Mersch sticks, Pearson and King become expendable. Unless you want these guys sitting in the box.

I agree regarding King to a degree but Mersch has to prove himself first and it's possible Gaborik is moved or they play Mersch on the 3rd or 4th line scratching Nolan or Andreoff.

I think we're going to need to be patient with Mersch. Almost every forward the Kings have given their first shot with the big club didn't do much on their first call up and were subsequently sent down.

I seriously doubt Pearson is going anywhere. He's playing well on the top line and played well with that 70s last year before the injury.

The Kings can't afford to pay Kopitar AND Lucic with no cap space. Someone is going to have to move to create room. This is on the notion they sign both guys (Kopitar & Lucic). Who do you move?

Doughty- Never! The Franchise!
Carter- Hell No. Might be our best player!
Quick- Nope. Not after all those years with a #1 goalie.
Muzzin- shouldn't. Young and only getting better.
Toffoli- nope. A stud and best winger since Luc.
Pearson- could but why get rid of good young winger.
Martinez- could but Tough to move to make the team better.
Gaborik- yes but contract length and age might make it harder.
Brown- yes but no one is going to take that contract with major assets.
Greene- duh. Should have never been signed in the first place.

The rest of the guys won't help cover the cap space for raises. When it all comes down to the end; you are left with 3 choices...

1) Don't sign one of Kopitar or Lucic.
2) Try and move one or two big contracts (Greene/Brown/Gaborik).
3) sign both, can't move anyone in #2....have to trade one of Pearson or Martinez.

We will have enough cap space, no one needs to get moved. This post is irrelevant.

Next.

Here's the other thing: whether I agree or not with some of the player/contract assessments, I think we're forgetting (which is maybe a bit ironic given how much we discuss our older players' 'declines') that much of this roster is young and continually improving. We can argue that Muzzin and several others haven't reached their ceilings yet. McNabb could turn into an absolutely stellar #2 by year's end. Shore could start popping in points and be an all-around third line force. Mersch could be a catalyst on a variety of lines. Maybe even Weal figures it out and adds a bunch of points from the 4th line. Point is, there's a lot of 'unknown' that we're currently working--and winning--with, and though I don't dispute that DL will almost certainly seek vet help at the deadline to push us over the top, we're sitting VERY pretty right now, to the extent that we may not make any real moves at all. As that relates to the cap, well, we've seen that DL will let guys walk as opposed to just juicing the asset--for example, we could have traded Mitchell for a good pick to a team that needed him, but better to use him for a cup run even if he walks after, which looks great in hindsight. I have no doubt that if DL really really wants to keep Lucic, he will find a way that won't hamstring the rest of the roster, and I don't see him moving guys like King/Lewis for cap flexibility before the end of the season, if they're moved, it's for a hockey trade.

I love Pearson and his cap hit, but I wouldn't mind parting ways if it meant we can add him to a package to unload Brown. But I would only do that trade if the other team took Brown's full cap hit. Not sure if it is possible, but if I was a team like Edmonton, Calgary or Colorado I would take that deal.

If Mersch sticks with the club, I'd look for DL to move Pearson.
