Speculation: Loyalty

If Knies wants to play hard ball, turn the screws.
What screws, he is going to get an offer sheet if he goes into July. He has watched the club lose every big negotiation so his agent will have no fear. The only hammer is to come at him with their best number and then to trade him asap if he doesn't bite.

Somewhere along the way the "I'm a proud Toronto boy" routine clashed with mega millions. I hope he gets near league max and rots. It might not take long for fans to sour on him again. At least it won't be us.
I'm trying not to be vindictive.

Of all the possible scenarios of how this could have played out involving the hometown kid being drafted and developed by his local team and immediately adored by the fans, this is obviously the very worst possible scenario.

He should easily have become the record holder for most assists and points by a Maple Leaf, ever.

It's sad that it's ended up this way, but as I pointed out in the Marner thread - this is all on Mitch. The organization did everything it could, and then some, to give Marner anything and everything. They held up their end of the bargain.

Kyle bent over for everyone when the time came. Imagine if he was still running the show.

Dubas set the team back. They have to start undoing the damage somehow.

The shame is Dubas/Shanny tried to be player first and show loyalty and in the end management was removed for being stupid, and players dont care that they were loyal or not. All of the damage Shanny and Dubas did and in the end the loyalty didnt bring a championship and only caused anomosity and problems.

If you would have told me that after the Leafs signed prime Tavares and drafted Nylander, Matthews, and Marner that they would be in the exact same spot 10 years later in terms of contending I would have thought you were f***ing with me. 2 x top line centers + 2 top line wingers should have been more than enough to get us over the top.

Dubas should never work in the NHL again imo after not signing each of them to 8 year deals when they had a year left. Its not like it wasnt obvious each of them were talented players. Lost opportunity imo. f*** Dubas, f*** Shanny.

I am not upset Marner and probably Tavares are leaving. I am upset that the team gave them everything they asked for and it still wasnt enough for them. I can live without a Stanley Cup. It is a hard thing to do and you need to catch lightening in a bottle but at least work hard, try, and give a shit. Be likeable. These guys all present so increddibly douchey.

I'd rather not lol.

He showed insane loyalty to his guys though, and chose to pay them what they wanted in the hopes that the comfort and adulation of the organization would be returned in kind with massive performances in the post-season that never came.

He made his mistakes, but we probably need to acknowledge that the core f***ed him as much as they f***ed us as well.

I don’t think it needs to be cut throat

I like what Tampa did with Stamkos. They were firm on their offer and he left town. They got a younger, better player with that money

Be firm but don’t have a bad reputation that turns guys off. Vegas us known to do that stuff now and some guys will wonder if they will be next before they sign
Look how Tampa forced McDonough to waive his NTC and traded him to Nashville and then he accepted a trade back to Tampa two years later. If a team is highly competitive and shows that the team success is more important than individual players then players will respect that. Players that care more about winning than hurt feelings that is.
