Speculation: Loyalty

if knies gets overpaid, and then fails to live up to those expectations, I don't even know what to say. I might actually become a casual fan because this team isn't worth even a second of the fans time

if he gets 8-9m long term, or 6-7 on short term, he better give us ppg and 65+ paces in the playoffs, otherwise he can join the core 4 in being all about the money and can gtfo.

He is the scapegoat for everything negative to do with the team why would he be loyal to a team or fanbase who was never loyal to him?

If, when Marner leaves it will be because he was treated poorly

Maybe if he (and Paul) hadn't held out for every penny and actually gave a damn when it matters most, he wouldn't be the scapegoat.

Loyalty is like respect.

You need to earn it to get it. Players who are loyal to the team should be rewarded. The team in turn should be loyal to them.

Mercenaries should be treated as such.

Hired guns who whore themselves out for the best offer deserve no loyalty. The only thing they're loyal to is their bank account. They don't respect the team or the city.

Therefore aren't deserving of any back.

It's easy to tell who the players are that actually want to play for their team. It shows in virtually everything they do or say. They're constantly making small personal sacrifices on a regular basis for the betterment of the rest of the roster.

Those are the players who deserve loyalty and respect.

'Scapegoat' implies taking blame for others while innocent himself. I don't think that applies to the player who was the most overpaid and the worst (relative) playoff performer while also the worst at being interviewed.

I don't think he's been disloyal, he hasn't mislead anyone and has remained consistent with his actions.
He for the most part earned his contract. As the 4th highest paid, led the Team in scoring by 20 points while playing in all situations. Playoffs have been a let down for sure but they are all in that boat.
Treated unfairly and poorly, no doubt when compared to the others but we don't have the sharpest fanbase, many judge too many things by what they see/hear from the media.

Surely the contrast between blue and red bolded text won’t be lost on the Reader.

actually imo you mis-read the question that poster asked.

see the last year part? meaning 23-24 season. he's comparing Stamkos 23-24 season to Guentzel's 24-25 season and saying that Guentzel wasn't an improvement. nor did he take them anywhere in the playoffs.
In 23-24 season Stamkos had 40 goals and 81 points, Tampa lost in the first round to Florida.

In 24-25 Guentzel had 41 goals and 80 points, Tampa lost in the first round to Florida.

If we're keeping score at home, we're happy to see Mitch roll out because he's holding us back but we're also mad at him for not being loyal and leaving. Incredible.

I find it pretty adorable that people believe this sort of stuff - no wonder the Marner camp continues to try and drive the shifting narrative. There's always the gullible that will gobble it all up.

Treated poorly. LOL!

Can you name a Toronto player that has been treated worse by the fans? Has anyone had their home vandalized? Anyone else had a gun pointed at them?

Nobody condones that behavior at all - that's just awful.

Every fan base is going to have it's losers, and those people don't represent the fanbase. His relationship with the fanbase, in general, was destroyed by him and him only. Fans were ready to give this guy a statue on legend's row before the 2019 negotiations.

Sure, we agree, no one condones it. There seems to be an awful lot of people that acknowledge it happened, and then pretend it never happened.

With Mitch Marner's time as a Leaf quickly coming to an end, the concept of loyalty has been at the forefront of my mind. It was the downfall of Shanahan - being too loyal to his stars, even undermining his own GM(s) at times to do so. It's quite funny how Mitch has no such loyalty to this team even after they gave him everything he ever wanted (and far more than he ever deserved).

This situation is exactly why I've always been against this idea of loyalty in sports. Pro sports is a business, just like any other. You have to be ruthless to climb to the top. Being overly loyal to your guys will just make them entitled and disloyal in return. The organization needs to run like the Golden Knights. Cutthroat. Merciless. Hopefully some hard lessons were learned from this saga and the Leafs have a new mindset going forward in future contract negotiations, starting with Matthew Knies.
If Shanahan is the guy who blocked the trades of the core his reputation will have declined post playing career.

It was a horrible decision to keep Marner and allow his NTC to kick in.

As I've said before in replying to you repeatedly making this same 'point', I don't condone such behavior at all, but do you wonder why he is the only player treated in that fashion?

Some idiot on the trade board says Marner might see the third round when he signs with a new team. I could see Mitch riding coattails and not contributing much.

The fans didn’t rob him dude lol. Stop trying to blame the fans that support his lavish lifestyle.

He’d be driving around in a used Hyundai without them. He doesn’t exactly have the brains for a more white collar profession.

Can you name a Toronto player that has been treated worse by the fans? ... Anyone else had a gun pointed at them?

You act like the guys who jacked his car were fans of the team who knew it was Marner and targeted him for his poor play instead of it being some random car jacking of his $200,000 Range Rover like it really was.

buddy you need to take a break...

you think actual fans did that shit?

did you think actual fans stabbed paul pierce in the neck, back and chest back in 2000 as well, because that happened in Boston

or do you think the guys who stole giroux's car were also his fans?

If that's your logic marner should go play hockey in singapore or japan, no "fans" over there will do those things.
