I think this is worth having its own thread. He was more transparent about things then he normally is, we are entering a retool, there would have been more moves if we got younger players + draft picks, didn’t want to totally give up on the players in the room, Malkin involved all the way.

I’m getting the vibe he won’t be around much longer.

I don't understand his logic about not wanting draft picks, draft picks eventually become players or at the least you can trade those picks for players, he also more or less said Malkin is involved in the decisions, that leads me to think Malkin is I am sure influencing the decision to try and stay competitive instead of going for a "re-tool"

I liked what Lou had to say but the proof will be what happens in the off season. I never thought any of the defensemen would be moved at the deadline. They would need to be moved at the draft once teams figure out their cap situation. Lee and Pageau can be moved at the draft or next trade deadline. IMO the only lost opportunity was Palms. Given his poor defensive ability and high shooting percentage I see a declining player that would return a 3rd. Nice to have but won’t move the needle. I’m ok with Palms not being signed at this point.

That was maybe my favorite part of the interview. The way he said it's basically crazy if anyone thinks there's a GM in any of the 4 major sports who does not have to discuss things with their boss. I've always said the owners are involved in decisions (because it's their money and their team) around here and people are always putting that idea down. Does an owner say yes or no to Calum Ritchie? No. But do they sign off on major money decisions or whether a team tears it down or tries to stay playoff competitive? Duh. Of course they do.

Interesting to see the other side of the coin that Lou mentioned in his press conference: the "rebuild" that he says is a good "10 years". Yzerman here post-deadline talking about not wavering from his plan:

Yzerman talks 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, Red Wings’ playoff push and more | Detroit Red Wings

And here he is in year 6 and his team is currently on a 6-game losing streak and on the outside looking in to the playoffs, which the Red Wings have missed for 8 years. And he is getting some heat for the trade deadline just like Lou.

A good chance Isles wind up with a top 10 pick this year. I wonder if Lou trades that pick to bring in a under 25 player like he did with Romanov. It seems like Lou would rather have young players to come in now rather draft a player and wait 3-4 years. Maybe swing a deal and bring a player like mctavish that people here have mentioned or another Dman if Lou trades one of them.

What’s worse on the Red Wings rebuild is that they are looking on the outside in a pool of mediocre teams and they are not rising to any occasion. The wild card is there for the taking, but each team in that pool just keeps treading water.

Doubtful Wings make the playoffs absent a 5-10 game winning streak. So, tack another year onto those numbers of rebuild and missing the playoffs.

We most likely will have the 8 or 9 spot.

Like who? It better be a star player not a mid-6 type.

Looks like teams aren’t too excited about this draft due to the velocity of picks tossed around.

Lou made a very smart move with Romanov - Montreal wanted to make a splash while hosting the draft. Lou played that well with what is now a top 4 defenseman.

Of course he would because we all know Lou is not going to wait around to see a prospect develop and our owners are not interested in a few years of no chance at playoffs so we will have continued mediocrity until this team hits a wall and we are forced to have a long and miserable re-build, probably about 3 years away

Malkin isn’t interested in waiting around for prospects to develop either. And neither will the fans.

You speak for all fans? And what you are saying there is no chance we are going to see the Islanders win a cup in at least the next decade, and our objective is going to be to try and get in an 8th seed wild card
