I can totally see a 2 year deal for Kane so it lines up for when Panarin’s contract expires. I can’t imagine him costing nearly as much as Guentzel or Reinhart. Rangers need to stop the winger roulette and get a true top 6 RW affixed to that position with time. It gives the Rangers a nice 2 year window. He will be healthy and will have more pucks for him to touch, considering Tarasenko and others from last year won’t be around. The Rangers older core isn’t getting any younger.

My prefrence is neither but if I had to choose I'd rather they go for Tareshenko. He proved that he will buy into a system and adapt his game to win a championship. Kane will never do that. Showtime doesn't adapt to you. You adapt to him. Those days in the NHL are OVER!

Here’s a quick photoshop I did to see what he’d look like in a Rangers jersey

as a wing fan i couldnt care less about signing kane as were no where near challenging for a few years . and signing him last year just cost us about 5 spots in the draft which could end up being a big loss . dont want to do that again , give me hope for a future long term challenger before getting a weak team into playoffs

I’d be fine taking a chance on Kane again at the right term and cost. I thought he was pretty good as a NYR and you could tell he was limited by his injury during his tenure here.

He’ll likely miss some time and I’d think be on PP2 so it’ll likely be a disappointing season numbers wise (I wouldn’t be shocked if he scored around 60 pts/82 game pace) with limited PP time.

Wings have 2 top 6 forwards, Debrincat and Raymond. Really hope they can sign Kane and Stamkos to make a solid 2nd line, he was great for us.

I mean NYR tried the Kane fit already and it wasn’t a good fit. Why force it again?

As others have said, Kane is not who NYR need right now. They need forwards who do well in playoffs and provide some physical play as well. That’s not Kane.

The idea that the Rangers need to get tougher is stupid. They need to get better at driving play, and possession hockey. They have too many possession black holes.

Obviously now, Kane isn't fast, he doesn't drive possession, he doesn't play defense, and he plays on the perimeter. A large part of his game late in his career revolves around the PP, and those opportunities probably aren't available with the Rangers.

I don't think Kane would be my optimal RW addition. I want someone who can drive play. Kane won't do that. But as a secondary option after you don't get your main targets, I'd certainly prefer him to Blake Wheeler or Jack Roslovic who we had this year. He's instant offense and can put up points. Would be underwhelming, but I think there's a chance it could work.

I love watching him play, and I’ve done so since he’s been 12-13 years old. He’s so fun to watch, but your comment about adapting is spot-on. That’s why they’d be making a mistake to target him and hand him such responsibility.

We’ve just watched Florida and Vegas win Cups with little homegrown talent. They made smart moves and had similar type players up and down their lineups. Even in Detroit last year, they had 12 forwards playing one way, and Kane playing another.

It should be a concern. One the stat watchers will never understand.

They don't need bone crushing hits or rugged defensemen, but their hits end up with little to no puck separation. Their back checking and riding players off the puck into the boards is non-existence. They're weak on the board battles. Driving play eliminates a lot of that when you have the puck but they also need to be tougher in those areas, whether it's the current group buying in and doing those things, or pieces that will.

I honestly think we overdo all this stuff. The players this applies to is Zibanejad, Kreider, and Panarin. Three guys in their 30’s. Zibanejad’s lack of athleticism has really shown the last couple of years. He just doesn’t have the oomph he once did, and that’s why he coasts and either plays very safe at evens or low effort. He’s a PP specialist at this point. Needs a driver. Kreider doesn’t have the same athleticism he once did. Injuries have taken a tole on his body. He can’t be the player anymore that the league once hated. Occasionally he can show flashes of that ability with the size, strength, speed, hitting, and forechecking, but I think he knows that he’s a moments player now and not a consistent presence every shift. Another guy that isn’t far from a PP specialist.

These two just can’t drive play. Asking them differently isn’t going to change things. They are too told and have too many miles to do so. Panarin can still drive play in the regular season, but his game is like tailor made to own the bad NHL teams and players that aren’t going to be there in the playoffs. He even tried more during this past season and postseason to play harder and less perimeter, and he had little success. The space he needs isn’t there. He’s not a PP specialist, but in the playoffs when the players are better he’s less effective and to get his maximum effectiveness he needs the PP where he gets more space and puck touches.

So put it together and this is not a coaching issue. This is an issue where these players cannot form the core to drive play and the results we need. The question becomes if we can find players to put around them to drive play for them in the playoffs or if we can add just enough additional talent to the roster that can produce moments. We’ve won four series the last three years. This team can get close. They just need a little more. They don’t need a retool and shouldn’t make big changes at this point unless it’s admitting this team won’t get it done and you turn to a total rebuild. A retool won’t help things. They need to try to keep kicking at it and hope that the way they play finally will once be enough.
