Can see the difference between a well oiled machine in Carolina compared to the Leafs in these two recent games. Carolina knows how to play lockdown defensive hockey and can execute on special teams. The Leafs are a scrambling mess when a good team is fighting to tie it, the PP continues to deteriorate and the PK still sucks.

I don’t know how much of a difference Marner makes if he plays in these games. I’d like to think if he was suiting up the Leafs would’ve been able to shut the Canes down in the previous game and the powerplay would’ve converted at least once.

Big boys needed to show up more too. Matthews at least partially did by assisting on Robertson’s goal. Another goal from a primary scorer and we at least leave with a point.

Woll looked great though. And given the circumstances a hard fought one goal loss against a great team isn’t anything to lose sleep over. Just frustrating being so close and having chances only to fail to convert. So many close calls.

EDIT: Also Jarnkrok would really help our PK too. Need him healthy.

We beat them in 6 in a playoff series.

To me these 2 games don’t tell me anything.

No Marner, no Jarnkrok, is a big f***ing deal. Marner usually scores against them. Matthews line is more dangerous. Depth gets spread around better.

Lost one in a shootout.

Lost another on the second half of a back to back playing 2 games in less than 24 hours. clearly they were tired and low energy. Still only lost by 1, could have had a few more.

Last game we ran their show 5 on 5.

Clean up the PK, get our players back, play not tired. We’re fine.

I'm still in the keep Robertson camp. I know he's got a lot to learn, but I also think he's got a lot more upside to him, too. Personally, I'm starting to think his biggest hurdle right now if Keefe.
Robertson would benefit greatly on a team that could give him a guaranteed 16-18 per night with top PP minutes.

Leafs will probably regret trading him when hes putting up 25-30 somewhere else but whats the alternative? Trading Marner or Willy? Lets hope Tre can come up with a decent return.

It was the best and worst of him tonight. Bad penalty and poor decision making that comes with being a young guy in the NHL. Then he is strong on the forecheck, does a good job getting himself open ,and then rips home our only goal of the game with that shot of his.

He's not in the lineup come playoff time but at 22 and with the Leafs depth that's nothing to be ashamed of or something to be disappointed with. Still a work in progress but very few players jump into the league feet running.

That game was a tough ask

We beat the Oilers then travel to Carolina and play against a very good team about 20 hours after we finished playing our last game while we're carrying injuries to some pretty key guys

I'm more than willing to criticize the team when they deserve it but I don't think you could ask much more of them in the circumstances

After the game last night no one should be surprised with regards to this meaningless game.

Pretty horribly scheduled game for a team to host HNIC, then hit the road to play an arbitrarily early game starting at 6 pm on a Sunday. Not an excuse but after that big marquee Edmonton game, I wasn’t all that excited for a game just 20 hours later. Carolina should have dragged their asses up here!

They couldn't shut down a team in their last game vs Washington.

Woll is the great wall

Keep him healthy for the playoffs, even if it means that we are in a wild card position .
TV is 4 prs behind us, I wouldn't mind playing the Rangers

Hopefully Sammy us ok if bot play Jones as well.

They lost another game.

One of those low scoring playoffs style games too. Stop the world and let me get off. This is getting to be more than I can take.

How are they ever gonna break their regular season record if they keep losing games?

This team is supposed to be a favorite to win the cup. But every time they face a real contender, like they did again last night, they fold faster than one of my shirts from the dollar store. After watching that travesty I'm not sure why anyone would think this team is gonna go far in the playoffs.

It's never happened before.

Don't see any reason why they would now. The team's scoring dried up and the goalie left hung out to dry. Along with a coach who has no answers.

The Leafs are as playoffs ready as I've ever seen them.

Against Edmonton our defense had 23 hits
Made them pay the price every time they entered our zone
Against Carolina 7 hits
Thank god when we exit first round Keefe will be fired

Benoit should never come out he leads this team to war

I would much rather keep Robertson in the lineup ahead of Gregor and Dewar (they don’t provide much, they don’t score or hit).

That whole 4th line just is relly meh.

Dewar and Gregor PK, which we need, and has been a problem. Robertson is an all offensive guy, which is great when he's putting up points... but it needs to be more than once every five games. I'm a big fan of Robertson's, but he needs to be a 0.5PPG contributor, to have value in the playoffs.

They’re not good at killing penalties though, they’re just there…

Gregor's results are near best on the team. Dewar has been good elsewhere in the past... not so good here so far.... I think it's a systems issue, more than personnel.

Hits are not counted by the same people. They vary GREATLY from arena to arena. Toronto is one of the buildings that runs those numbers up. You get a hit in Toronto for battling in the corner and touching another guy.

He's lost the emerging patience in his game we've seen at times this year, that maturity to his thought process. Since he's returned from being sent down, he's running around the ice without any measure, less poised, almost mindless energy at times. You can tell his confidence is down and he's worried about making mistakes, they haven't really handled him well. For example, Knies has been pretty brutal for a while, but he's cemented in the lineup, with Robertson he's always one brain fart from the dog house it seems.

I normally back the kid, but he's really playing himself off the lineup for this year anyways. He needs to slow down and make smart plays, harness that great motor he has. He's good depth, but he won't be starting the playoffs. Next year, when we have the cap crunch, he's an excellent option to start the season in the top six/nine.

Robertson would benefit greatly on a team that could give him a guaranteed 16-18 per night with top PP minutes.

Every one dimensional offensive forward who brings nothing to the table when they don't have the puck would benefit greatly from being guaranteed 18 minutes of ice with top powerplay deployment.

The problem is the Maple Leafs wouldn't benefit from that at all.

Can't say I've ever thought I wish he had more ice time.

I don’t know what’s more concerning…your incendiary takes on the Leafs or the fact you buy your shirts at a dollar store.

Yeah, you can't put much stock into those numbers when the home arena fudges them.

Yeah schedule has been odd this year. Now they have NJ coming up 3 times in the next couple weeks.
