If you missed the first five, it was just like most of the last 5 road games. The last 55 minutes however, was good Kings hockey.

Even worse...I'll miss 6 of the next 8 outright due to work...but I'll be driving people nuts at the kettle on those Saturday games asking for the score...

Coyotes still haven't opened locker room to media. Team meeting ongoing.

Crappy stat of the night: the only players on the Kings with a positive takeaway to giveaway ratio are Kyle Clifford, Trevor Lewis, and Andy Andreoff. Anze Kopitar has 24 giveaways to only 6 takeaways.

Happy about the game but wow, not a good stat for the Kings. AA hasn't played much, but nice for Cliffy and Lewie.

Martinez returns and the D settles right down. Amazing coincidence.

Jones' sixth career shutout ties Tony Esposito as the third fastest goalie to six shutouts in league history.

Misleading stat, never mind a subjective one. When you control 60-70% of the play, you're going to give away the puck more than straight take it away. It's not a zero-sum stat and it's faulty anyway as it's different from arena to arena. Similar to hits--piling up the hit count is often a sign you're chasing the game.

Kings always have a lot of giveaways, it wasn't exclusive to tonight. Look at Doughty's giveaways, he's near leading the league all the damn time.

Avs fans were pumping ROR's tires for being a takeaway king when it's like no **** you're going to steal a lot of pucks when the other team has it 70% of the time.

Johnny Utah has been waiting18 years for this day to finally arrive.

Good explanation, good point. What about takeaways/minute of opposition possession and giveaways/minute of your team's possession time? Or assigning values to a player's takeaways and giveaways based on what percentage of them lead to goals for and against?

Kings haven't given up a goal since Voynov practiced with the team. :sarcasm:

He transferred his "Essence" spiritually to all the Kings Dmen. That practice was actually some kind of ritual as they are not allowed to get him on the ice physically.

How important are takeaways? Kings are always near last in that stat. What about blocked shots? Same thing. Who plays the best defense in the league last 4 seasons? These guys. The Kings play real defense.

Jones starting again I wonder if he is being showcase for a possible trade ? From what i read Berbue looks ready to come up. I'm sure our ahl fans will comment

I follow your logic but this is Sutter here. When does he ever do anything with the team that isn't his idea and his idea only? See: Jonathan Bernier.

I can't remember if it was Jim Fox or Sean O'Donnell who mentioned it early in the season, but the Kings really want Jones to get 25+ starts this season. That way Quick is fresh come playoff time. It makes sense and as long as he's sharp down the stretch, that's all that matters.

I think they used to keep the 'rate' statistic (Giveaways/60) on the old behindthenet site but that's no longer--and i'm sure teams are internally tracking 'true' possession (I was going to start that as a pet project but I haven't had free time, plus I doubt people would be that interested, haha), or actual TIME with the puck rather than corsi, but it might be interesting to see who is coughing up the puck and where. To relate it to the original discussion, yes, lately Kopi seems to be turning it over more and more visibly than usual--but I would imagine he actually had a fairly high rate of 'giveaways' before just due to eventually losing the puck down low after fighting on the boards forever (another theory why the Kings have so many giveaways, especially this season--losing the puck down low instead of killing the play getting the shot on net (corsi)).

Makes a lot of sense, and Jones has looked good. Can be all of the above really.

Plus, maybe a challenge to Quick!

Since Game 1 against the Hawks, Kopitar has 5 goals, 19 points, and 57 shots in 35 games. That's an average of 1.63 shots per game, and 12 goals, and 45 points over 82 games. The Kings record in those 35 games? 22-9-4. That includes beating the Hawks with 0 goals from Kopitar, and also the Rangers for the Cup, again with 0 goals from Kopitar.

Some other goal/points totals for the Kings since that Game 1:
Carter - 13/32
Toffoli - 14/27
Williams - 9/26
Doughty - 6/22
Pearson - 12/19
Brown - 10/18
Muzzin - 4/16
Gaborik - 9/15
Richards - 5/15
Martinez - 6/13
Stoll - 5/13

Kopitar is tied with Richards and Stoll in goals. That's crazy.

It's a unique team, that's for sure.

Is the team meeting still going?

Everybody top 9 is going to finish with exactly 41 points. I've been hoping to see something bizarre like that for about a month now, and your homework gives me hope.

Ugh Kopitar again , will need to be white hot after the all star break to make his career average of 70 points.

So frustrating with him.
