58 points in 56 games. He could do it, if he ever starts shooting the puck, and going to the net, and all the other things we say about him every year.
I guess the SF Giants, or even the NY Giants when they were winning Super Bowls, are sort of like the Kings. They don't wow you with talent or wins. You don't know if the Kings are just tired from all the playoff games and short summers, or if they're pacing themselves knowing they can seemingly flick a switch, or if they're just not as good.
Possession numbers are down, an entire defensively pairing from the Cup team isn't there, Gaborik has played half the season and scoring at .5 a point per game, Kopitar is scoring at the same pace, yet the Kings are still 8th in goal differential, have the 12th best record in the league, but only 6 points behind Tampa Bay, and have the 5th best 5-on-5 goals for/against ratio. The Kings are averaging more goals per game so far this year than they did last year. That's with Gaborik out 50% of the time, Kopitar hibernating like 90% of the time, Voynov out, and two guys that have yet to play 100 NHL games leading the team in goals.
I don't know how the Kings beat Chicago with 0 goals from Kopitar. That might be the most amazing thing they did last year in the playoffs. They have to be one of the most frustratingly fulfilling teams in sports history. They're the tortoise. They're the kid that doesn't do his homework, but aces the test.
