Yes... and no.
If you don't follow the Angels in detail, then yes, it's wild and a waste. If you do follow in detail, this has been in design by owner Moreno as it was exposed during GM Dipoto era. Moreno wanted hitters and went out to grab 1B Pujols in 2012 and OF Hamilton in 2013, where it costs the Angels consecutive first round picks. Dipoto knew the Angels didn't have any pitching prospects on the horizon when he came onboard. Due to losing a 1st round pick if you sign a high priced FA that was qualified by their original team, Dipoto traded for starting pitcher Zack Greinke in 2012 with plans to re-sign him after the season. That's where owner Moreno used the $25 on free agent OF Hamilton over retaining pitcher Greinke. After seeing how Moreno worked and wouldn't spend extra money for pitchers, Dipoto started trading positional players for pitchers. Under Dipoto, the Angels went .500 in three out of four years, won the AL West in 2014. Dipoto quit in-season in 2015 because the organizational power structure worked this way: manager Sosh > owner Moreno > GM Dipoto. The Angels hasn't finished above .500 since Dipoto era.

We are half way through the season and we've let in 426 runs allowed (RA). At this rate, the Angels are on pace to give up over 840 runs allowed. During the Dipoto era was the only times the RA was under 700. Trout's first call up was in 2011, but his first complete season was in 2012.
It's crazy to have Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, and Upton on the roster and be a middling team behind the rebuilding Mariners. The Angels are a one-dimensional team, they're just a hitting team. Three of the top-6 RBI generators for the 2021 Angels were drafting by Dipoto in 2015 in Ward, Fletcher, and Walsh. Crazy!

My grandpa and I always complain that we have no pitching since Dipoto left. Five years later, same story. I'm just numb to having top end positional players (Trout, Ohtani, Upton, and, now, Rendon) and doing nothing with our season. We need better starting pitchers. We need a better bullpen. We need more pitchers selected in the first round.
