I think the book is out on Bundy when he focused on his peripherals more last year and it worked like a charm. The Angels were banking on his consistency to be its ace. That was a gamble.

As for Ohtani, I'm not surprised at all. In his rookie year, he was our ace, but we had to shut him down. Yet, his hitting was always amazing. He's 26 years old now, meaning his muscles are hitting his prime. There was a picture between his first year in the MLB's and second year where his biceps looked like they doubled in size that made me think of Trogdor!!!!!!!

Oddly enough, you've brought up this Eppler and Dipoto thought.

Anyhow, Ohtani has been a highlight this year as a two-way player. His two way play has him tied for the highest WAR this year at 4.5. It's 2-something for pitching and hitting. Although Trout has been out, the rest of the team has been stepping up that wasn't last year in players such as Upton, Walsh, and Ward with their bats. Stassi returning into the lineup also helps. This means we're getting more run support this year than previous years despite our bad pitching. Oh... Rendon has been in and out of the lineup and hasn't done much in his recent outings. At home, Rendon is batting .198.

Top-5 RBI as of 6/21

Ohtani: 54 RBIs ... (239 At Bats)
Walsh: 51 RBIs ... (255 ABs)
Upton: 32 RBIs ... (221 ABs)
Rendon: 30 RBIs ... (178 ABs)
Ward: 27 RBIs ... (141 ABs)​

It's crazy not seeing Trout in this list, but he's 8th on the list. Walsh and Ward come from the 2015 draft class (Dipoto). Ohtani and Upton were signed by Eppler. Rendon and Jose Iglesias (7th in RBIs with 21 ribbies) were signed under current GM Perry. 6th in RBIs is Fletcher, also from the 2015 draft class. That 2015 class is turning out to be boss.

Currently, we own the 3rd worst RA in the AL and 5th worst in all of the MLB. Yes, we have have a terrible pitching group all around. Yet, we own the 3rd best RS (runs scored) in the AL and 5th best RS in all of the MLB. Our run differential is -12. We are a .500 team to date, which is amazing! And yet, to be in the playoffs, then we have to jump four other teams to land that second wild card spot.

Next off-season, with Pujols monies off of the books, maybe we can finally land a top pitcher as well as better relief pitchers. Maybe lefty pitchers Naughton and Detmers might get a sneak preview late in 2022?

With what is going to take to lock up Ohtani, I don't think Angels will have the money to sign a big name pitcher. Especially with Trout, Rendon, and Upton already on the books. Ohtani is going to get an AAV in the $45-50M range.

Moreno wanted hitters and went out to grab 1B Pujols in 2012 and OF Hamilton in 2013, where it costs the Angels consecutive first round picks. Dipoto knew the Angels didn't have any pitching prospects on the horizon when he came onboard. Due to losing a 1st round pick if you sign a high priced FA that was qualified by their original team, Dipoto traded for starting pitcher Zack Greinke in 2012 with plans to re-sign him after the season. That's where owner Moreno used the $25 on free agent OF Hamilton over retaining pitcher Greinke. It's crazy to have Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, and Upton on the roster and be a middling team behind the rebuilding Mariners. The Angels are a one-dimensional team, they're just a hitting team. Three of the top-6 RBI generators for the 2021 Angels were drafting by Dipoto in 2015 in Ward, Fletcher, and Walsh. Crazy!

Dipoto is 2 GMs ago aka ancient history, they are now on the 2nd GM since DiPoto has been gone.
Dipoto in Seattle has improved and he learned from some of his mistakes but he has a owner in Seattle that lets him do a full on rebuild after the trying contend on day 1 failed.
No GM for the Angels has been allowed to do that since at least 2000. May have to go back further for the last time they did a full on tear down of trading all the stars away
because in the 1990s they always had several players like Salmon, Edmonds, JT Snow, Anderson, Finley, Glaus so they couldn't have done a full tear down in the 90s.

The point of history is to also let someone know that it isn't amazing to see the Ducks falter with superstars. While it may be new to that person, it is not a new idea because, as you stated, we still have the same owner who pursues hitting over a balanced team. Not everyone can be all high and mighty like you to assume everyone knows this especially when a fellow poster thinks it's wild this year alone.

Scope... it matters... like history.
