Q+A: London Knights GM Mark Hunter

By Ryan Pyette
Q: This was a most challenging year on and off the ice. How were you able to guide the team through it?

That’s one thing I enjoyed about this team. (Adversity) made them stronger instead of bringing them down. They kept battling and getting better for the team and themselves – and it meant a lot. It’s a process to get the kids going. We weren’t good early in the season and then went on a little bit of a run. There are always . . . things that happen within your team and there has to be a lot of perseverance. It’s not a smooth road.
Q: The January trade for Hamilton’s Ryan Winterton – especially when so many people thought you’d land Kingston’s Shane Wright – is one of the best of your Knights tenure. What happened there?
It was one of those deals (with Ryan Humphrey for London’s first-rounder Luca Testa, promising d-man Carson Lloyd and a 2026 second-round pick) that worked out better than we thought it would. We were all happy with it. Winterton hadn’t played all season (due to shoulder surgery) but that’s why young men need time and development. He really just hit his stride in the playoffs . . . Everyone thinks there is just a switch you turn on after missing a half-year. It takes time to consistently bring it every game and by the end of the year, Winterton, if he wasn’t the best player in the league, he was right up there. It’s impressive for him and Seattle has to be tickled pink on where he’s come as a hockey player and a person.

Does Fagan fit the bill as Dickenson 2.0 and start with the team leaving camp. I guess come September there will be some clarity who comes out of camp as the the 3 OA’s and rookies making the grade. Sure wish the best to all those moving on and their contributions to a stellar season that they went through. Tough times and they bonded and played hard. I still can’t help but feel for Brett . He could have turned heads in a long playoff run and gets more accolades. He was definitely tuned in to the task. Hopefully Zack can build from his positives he built after being thrown in to a tough situation. The valuable playoff experience gained by the youngsters is definitely a building block in what looks like a tough season. Windsor fans are saying the Kraken will be sending Wright back so they will yet again be the toast of the west or the will be darling him for all the picks they traded away + more.

A much weaker Remparts team beat a much more powerful Seatle team for the Memorial Cup. It is not with fluke emotional coach Patrique Roy had his team playing their last game of the season with a lot of emotion, it's like they found octane for their skates to speed them to a 5-0 win

City council agreed Tuesday it needs to see how a $33.3-million renovation of Budweiser Gardens will benefit the city before it decides to pay for much of it.

City politicians voted to approve the direction set at an earlier corporate services committee debate that more detail is needed on a $26.7 million request from city coffers – and especially on its expected return on investment.

I went on Kasper's instagram and he is now following london knights, bonk, sim, barkey, and cowan. Maybe a good sign?

( most of them also followed him back)
He was originally pegged as a first round pick in the upcoming NHL draft, but he's fallen considerably in the rankings. Some signs of inconsistency, and undisciplined play. But, he even still, he would provide some much needed scoring up front...My gut says he's here in September.

That might explain why the Knights wished him a happy birthday on social media. They didn't do that to imports that didn't intend to show up

I honestly think he plays the same game as former Knight Max Jones. Very physical power forward with a great shot and decent skating. He would be a welcome addition to have some size and grit in the Top 6 for sure.

Kasper Halttunen

2022-23 Team: HIFK / Liiga
Date of Birth: June 07, 2005
Place of Birth: Helsinki, FIN
Height: 6-foot-3, Weight: 207 pounds
Shoots: Right
Position: Right Wing
NHL Draft Eligibility: First-year eligible
Following this slow start, Halttunen was eventually sent down to play with HIFK U20, which is the juniors hockey league in Finland for his Liiga club. This change of scenery did wonders for Halttunen’s production, as he went on to score 18 goals and 24 points in just 18 games played.
So, what we have is a developing forward who was simply outmatched while playing against men as a 17-year-old, but when facing opponents closer to his own age and development, Halttunen was able to showcase his full toolkit. He has a strong shot, impressive offensive instincts, and understands how to utilize his body to drive play around the ice, and when he is fully engaged in a game he can be a dominant force on the ice.
All this means that, while Halttunen wasn’t able to seize the title of draft darling during the 2022-23 season, he also didn’t tank his stock by playing against men in Finland. He has the intangibles that NHL general managers covet, and I expect that potential upside will outweigh any questions that may surround him.
