No doubt, best current contract in the league at @ $775k.

I’m sure Washington does not want this to go to open market. Does he get Jarry/Keumper money?

He gets 5.5-6 mil likely per x 5 years. Basically the Mackenzie Blackwood contract plus 10-15%

Fortunately for him and his agent Seattle and Colorado already set the market for late-20s guys with ~80 games of being a legit 1A. Will be interesting to see if the Caps go into that 5x5 range given they got burnt on the last one they gave out to Kuemper

DK is 13-3-5 with a .922 and they got PLD for him it's not like it's a cautionary tale

I'm glad DK re-found his game in LA and the Caps certainly came out ahead being able to flip him for PLD, but he had a .902 sv% and a -5.5 GSAA in his two years in DC and had clearly lost the starter's net. Maybe "burnt" was too strong but it certainly was not a deal that worked out in the Caps' favor.

There are enough reasons to like a potential long-term deal for LT more than the one for Kuemper -- mostly the fact that he's younger and won't be coming off of an eye injury -- but the record of these mid-range deals for goalies in the NHL is on the whole pretty awful. Petersen, Jarry, Murray, Korpisalo, Grubauer, Merzlikins, Lehner, Gibson is not a particularly inspiring list. Basically the only real "win" I can think of in that range is Binnington

You have to expect when you hand out a big ticket on a multi year deal to any goalie, that there will be bumpy rides along the way. Injuries, inconsistent play, good year then bad year…it just comes with the territory. Shesty, bob, vasi have been great at times and pedestrian at times.

5x5 is the boilerplate standard for goalies like him. If the Caps dont give him that someone else will.
Apparently they are already having discussions with both players about an extension. I imagine it’s a bit of a delicate issue, even if they know they only want to keep Thompson they don’t want to upset chemistry/morale by tipping their hand.

If he was into 5x5 it probably would have been done in the summer.

Joey Daccord got 5x5 after one good season because Seattle knew that if he proved it again, the price would go up.

Thompson has two good seasons as the 1B in Vegas and now he has a third half season where he has been elite.

The tiers now are basically average to below average starters get 5M to 6.5M.

Very good starters get 8M.

Franchise goalies get 12M .

Hellebuyck gets 12M if he is a UFA now. He suffered from bad timing.

If Thompson finishes this season at his current pace, he is getting 8M. Caps likely get a haircut for taking the risk of signing him early.

Something to consider is that he may want max term, which means he can't sign until after the TDL.

There is no chance he signs for 5M right now. That was likely the number in the summer before he has this season.

Toronto/Edmonton will be all over market rate +10% for Thompson no problem. Wash has to decide if they want to pay or not, that's it, or trade and get assets.

Both teams would being cap tight, should trade right now for the playoff push on that cheap contract.
