Sheldon Souray, an orange cone with a boom of a shoot with a physical game

I hope he become better defensively, if so, we may have a very valuable piece

Souray was awesome
I met Sheldon when he came off the ice at a morning skate. We were talking, he got called into the locker room, came back out and apologized for leaving our chat, he handed me a stick. After practice we walked out side by side talking. Sheldon Souray and Mike Komisarek are arguably the 2 nicest athletes I have ever met.

Souray was a beast in the playoffs though. Never understood how he could turn it on defensively like that. Mailloux was actually going through the same story arc in the AHL playoffs before Charlotte.

Maybe this is one of the better future comparison despite the painful memory of Jason Spezza decking Souray so bad, he lost his jockstrap.

But...of corse I want M to be a top 2 but I'll settle for Souray V2.

But hey, let's trade him right now...

If we can land one top 6 C , why not ? I understand Mailloux could bring something unique but his play in his zone made me nervous from the little i saw this year and from what I have read here from poster like Montreal, he did not progress

A lot of hot takes on Mailloux in here. Some positive, many negative. I think what we have to remember is this kid only just turned 22 (in April). He’s a developing prospect, in a position that often requires a longer time to develop before they’re ready to play full time in the NHL. We’re seeing it on the big club with guys like Xhekaj, Struble, and even Guhle. Not Hutson obviously but he’s a freak haha…. It takes time for a young guy to break in and become a steady NHL defender.

The thing I always go back to when evaluating high end talent - “You can teach defense but you can’t teach offence.” It’s that simple with this prospect. He’s got a ton of offensive ability, but his defense is poor. He tried focusing more on that part of the game this year and his offensive totals dwindled because of it….

He does add size and physicality at a prime position, and also shown a ton of character and willingness to do the hard work required to even be offered a contract by Hughes. That’s not something to be simply Pooh poohed and given away. He has some significant warts, but with proper coaching and a commitment to hard work, I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t be a regular NHL player. Hes close in many ways - Christ he has 5 points in 8 NHL games! - if we can just get him to be an average defender who plays with an edge, he will be a big addition to this team. How many 6’3, 220 lbs right hand shot defenders have that kind of offensive ability while still playing physical/dropping the gloves in today’s game? Almost zero. We can absolutely use what he brings but we have to be patient.

Some of you may remember when the Habs had the best development system in the NHL. Those old Nova Scotia Voyageurs teams produced and developed so much elite talent for the parent club. Prospects were allowed to simmer and develop before they joined the big club, but they were ready when they got there. Defensemen like Larry Robinson, Rick Chartraw, Brian Engblom, Mike Lalor all spent at least two seasons in the AHL and went on to have long careers in the NHL, and the AHL was a tough tough league back then.

Have some patience, we have a talented prospect here with a unique skill set, who is still very young, and who has already shown he can produce offensively at the highest level.

That's why I "targetted" him. He has the potential to be a massive difference maker on defense. Again, POTENTIAL.

Another "massive" issue is improvement in play is not linear. M actually flipped dramatically between March and April. From someone who couldn't win a puck battle and forwards were clearing HIM from the net, to a beast that I've only seen from Guhle. He's making mistakes but we also have to take a closer look at what his partner and forwards are doing. More then once on slo-motion and replay, what first glance appears like a a bad move, sometimes it's a result of his partner or forwards failing to support defense. That dramatic March/April difference was also part of the forwards coming back harder to support defense.

To be clear, he does make boneheaded decisions, it may sound like an excuse, but defacto EVERY defenseman does. Even in the NHL, see Math. What he needs to do is cut down on them to where they are less frequent, less significant and hopefully secondary to his offensive production.

Further, by definition, offensive defenseman take risks. It's on him to pick his spots but also to have a defensive structure and coaching where any pinches are covered by the forwards. That may be less of a problem in the NHL then a rookie laden AHL team.

There are not many offensive RHDs with size, abundance of grit and attitude. Much like our multi year search for a 2C, trading him away will be hard to replace and worse, can easily be another Sergachev or McDonough.

I like Mailloux game but how is he gonna be on PP1 , imo his biggest strength is his shot so I'm not sure how you get to utilise it on PP1. Barely anybody in the league plays 2 D at the point. It's gonna be PP2 bottom pairing if he does carve a career with us.

Agreed. I think the important point is that if we trade him it has to be for something that makes us amazing. Sergachev and McDonough were horrible because it did not improve the team at all to trade them. So when they became good NHLers, it hurt even more.

Sergachev in particular was a terrible gamble. It didn't solve the C problem, while making a bigger hole on PMD.

Sergashev was such a bad trade the day it was made , we did not need hindsight for that one whatsoever lol. What a joke. 9th overall smooth skating giant LD for a perimeter winger nice

Mailloux will always be a frustrating player defensively, but if his offence translates to the NHL, he's still going to be an important player.

This team especially lacks what Mailloux brings:
- Physicality/meanness on the backend
- RD
- A dman that can score goals

My issue with Logan is that he hasn't improved from his rookie season.
