Logan Couture set to announce his career is over due to injuries

I know there's a lot of butterfly effect going on with anything like this, but I've always been convinced that if Peter Chiarelli took Logan Couture instead of Zach Hamill in 2007, that early 2010s Bruins core would won another cup.

I remember when he kept telling the media he and Doughty were best buds and then Doughty said no were not

That's the other way around.

In 2011 Doughty said in an article, "He's a good buddy of mine" and then in 2016 he made that other comment about not being close.

Kind of... see below.

“I debated saying something but I didn’t. I don’t know … whatever. He can say whatever he wants. It doesn’t really affect us,” Doughty said. “I don’t even know what to say about that.”

Added Doughty, “To be honest everyone talks about this ‘buddy’ thing but we really aren’t that close. We really aren’t. We basically work out at the same gym and that’s about it.”

This hits back at a big storyline from two playoffs ago when Couture talked about how he and Doughty spend social time with one another every summer, but had to put their bond on hold for the postseason.

“We hang out by the pool, play some tennis, play some basketball and just be kids,” Couture said. “Two summers ago — I don’t know if the Kings want to know this — but we were short a goalie and he threw the pads on and played goal. He was actually a pretty good goalie, he stopped me a couple times. He brings that up often.”
Before their 2011 playoff series, Doughty called Couture “a good buddy of mine.”

Hate to see any player have to hang them up because of injury.

As a fan of an Eastern Conference team, I don't see the Sharks all that much. Prior to googling him after seeing this thread, I could've sworn he was 31-ish, not 36.
I think it's because people always think of Couture as the "young guy" on those 2010's Sharks teams even though Couture wasn't really that young it's just that the Sharks had a ton of their core guys at or near the end of their careers. (Thornton, Marleau, Boyle, Nabakov)

Could be, but I could equally see them just give it to Toff, or Ferraro if they re-sign him, for let's call it 2 more years until Celebrini is signed on his first big deal and has clearly established himself / can really step into the role. Seems like a lot to ask of a 19yo when we have some solid vets around.

I wouldn't be shocked (but I would be disappointed) if they straight up gave it to Goodrow.
You don't put the C on a kid when the club isn't even at 70 points a season. No need to put a youngster in front of the media all of the time to explain losses. I wouldn't slap even an A on either Cellibrini or Bedard until both clubs are much better. Need to first have a turnaround season like Ana who went from like 60 to 78 with 2 games to go.

He scored 70 points once and the Sharks thought he was worth 8 million/year... ouch

When healthy, Couture was worth every penny for the Sharks. Reliable and consistent production, heavy usage as the #1C, defensively responsible, and a leader as the captain.

Who else does all that for less than 8 million?

aaaahhhh, I still remember this tiny bitch coming out of nowhere for San Jose and making difference eliminating my team from the playoffs.

good player though, unfortunate career.

Scumbag Seravalli scooping a retirement announcement? Classic degenerate behavior from that guy
He's a journalist/insider, this is literally his job.

I'd much rather have it this way with Seravalli occasionally being "classless" by spoofing news like this, versus how basically all the big name hockey journalists and insiders all basically ignored the Kyle Beech story for a long time, until Westhead decided to break it. And no, that was not a case where these journalists didn't know. They just chose not to report on it.

Sad, was rooting for him to recover and chase a cup. Think it's always sad when a player of his caliber retires cupless.

Celebrini is already the guy who talks about that stuff with the media every night. He was functionally the captain from game 1 based on how the rest of the team treated him after seeing him practice.

I fully expect Toffoli to be the captain, but this wouldn't be a "give the C to the star" situation, if they did, it would be because he is already the guy everyone respects the most.

Oh come on. You and I both know these are vastly different situations. It's called discretion, and in that case it was evil and in this case it would have been respectful.
