why they will dominate: they have the best forwards and defenceman out of anyone in the tournament.

Same mantra... in a 7-game series...in a 7-games series...

all you have to is to imagine that an Olympic playoff game is Game 7 of best-of-7 series.
Plus it goes both ways: while Canada might have done better in 98 and 06 if the tournament had 7-game series, they might also have not won in 02 and 10. It's not like their overall record in either year was particularly impressive.

Their 98 and 06 record does not really suggest they were any better than the 4th and 7th best team respectively either, so it's doubtful series would have helped. In fact it could be argued that over the last 4 Olympics Canada was helped by the format rather than penalized by it.

Yeah winning all the games in 2002 and 2010 when its win or go home really helped Canada, what a horrible way to construct a tournament. Your right, Sweden losing to Belarus in a win or go home game, or Russia getting smoked by Canada in a win or go home game was really set for the Canadians.

Shucks, the other teams were just unlucky to have lost in such a formant. God darnit

You also don't mean the tournament was set up for Sweden in 2006 also do you? I mean they lost 5-0 and 3-0 during that tournament and self admittedly threw a game to face easier competition and basically a free ride to the gold medal game. Were they also helped by the same format?

Canada will not dominate in Sochi because:

-Sweden has the better (best one actually, at least for big ice) roster on paper.

-Russia has the home ice advantage.

-IIHF Rules are different and the refs suck so much that 50% of the games end up being ********d up, meaning that no team is able to dominate when a whistle is blown every damn 45 seconds.

-Big ice.

-Bad roster decisions. (WTF? No St.louis!).

-Since when did Canada dominate in any Olympics? (hint: not once in my life time, only in WJC's like 6 years ago but not in any other major tournament's).

And finally the most obvious reason (the others were just speculations but this one is a fact):

-Finland.

in 2002 Sweden had a great team. The beat Canada in group match 5:2 and the have absolutely dominated that game.

the were beaten in QF by Belarus(strongly underestimation+a lot of luck maybe 1 of 50 games ended with that result) i think no one has doubts who will win the 4 wins series.

In semis the 4wins game Canada:Sweden.....Sweden with Alfredsson,Sundin,Lidstrom,Naslund etc.....all in their best years. I think Swened will make it to finals.

also Czechs with better team than in Nagano lost to Russians 1:0, very lucky win for Russians.

in Vancouver, same story. Sweden could beat Slovakia and Canada in 7 game series as well as very good US team.

If there will be four wins series, it is highly probable, that Canada would never won any gold since 1998

I think they'll be dominant in Sotchi. They've been abysmal at the WJC in the recent years but that's the things with Juniors. They're used to rely on talent when they play. NHL players are far more used to parity and high competition level. That's why I think we'll see a more dominant Canadian team than what we see with Canadian juniors.

Being dominant doesn't mean they'll win the gold tho. USA will want their revenge. Russians will play in front of their crowd. Sweden is always competitive and so is Finland. It will be a lot more entertaining than the WJC but I predict that the Canada will bring back the gold medal at the end. Still can't believe they're not bringing Martin St-Louis tho... they need his leadership, speed, competition level.

Goaltending.

Exactly! Luongo and Price can be the biggest Siv's in the League at times, Price has let in some doosie's from 30 feet out. I hope Luongo can repeat what he did in 2010, would have liked to see Corey Crawford on the roster.
A few guys shouldn't be here...ie: Kunitz, Carter, Marleau and Nash...Hamhuis over Boyle? I still think Giroux, Richards, Hall and Couture would be better skaters on the big ice. Kunitz is playing lights out hockey this year but on NHL ice with Crosby setting him up...does he deserve Olympics? No! That was a Crosby decision not Yzerman. Nash has done nothing this year but put him on the roster? Carter over Richie? not even close, Carter is a sniper that's it and if his game is off he won't produce.(I like Carter but NO to the Olympics, guess Yzerman said yes this time for the snub in 2010) Why is Marleau on the roster? Don't have an answer other than maybe veteran presence but we have that on the blueline.

Indeed not once did they have the best record over the course of the tournament, yet they still won twice, so they were quite obviously not penalized by the format.

Every goaltender let in softies from time to time. It's going to be an issue for every country. Stay focus. That's all. I've seen Lundqvist, Rask, Miller let that kind of goal in too. Sometimes a gold medal is a question of good luck/bad luck. Cannot fault a team's win or loss only because of a soft goal allowed or not. Not with that kind of offense for Canada. If they let a soft goal in every game that's another thing. Even then, that's a team game. The tournament hasn't even begun and you're already pointing out that Canada could lose because of Price or Luongo letting softies in from time to time... comon

1. Reffing.
2. Opposing power plays may render Canada's depth etc. useless.
3. Goaltending.
4. Europeans treat european tournaments, which this really is, with utmost importance.
5. Canada will defeat round robin opponents with ease, putting them to sleep, and will then be shocked during elimination games.
6. Anything can happen in a single game.
7. Canada isn't really the favorite anyway. Not in Sochi. The home team is.

Wow, I simply HOPE we win Gold. Dominate? Cmon now. If the Playoff games were 7 game series then you MAY be onto something. One off games man, anything can happen, and I certainly don't expect 4+ goal margin of victories from start to finish (ie - dominating)

Has Canada ever dominated in the olympics?

In 1924, the closest score was a 6-1 win over the US.

Other scores in that tournament:

30-0 over Czechoslovakia
22-0 over Sweden
33-0 over Switzerland
19-2 over Great Britain
22-0 over Sweden again.

Individual opinions aside, the marketplace (sportsbooks) has Canada listed as the clear favourite.

and those 2 from Great Britain were from the Canadians who played for UK:)

yup, Sweden lost twice in torino and they weren't penalized either I guess. And since every team must have lost in Vancouver or they would have won the gold, I guess that holds no weight either

but the fact is Canada has won every game when it matters, and those are the do or go home games. One they lost in a shoot out, so not even a real loss in regulation

So, again 4 Olympics, 2 golds, and 1 shoot out loss that they didn't even lose in regulation.

So they have only lost really once in a do or go home game in 4 Olympics, which has resulted in 2 GOLD medals, and one cheap loss.

They have won as many golds as the other 4 major European countries have combined.
