Player Discussion Linus Karlsson

Karlsson will have to play his way off the parent Canucks roster for next season. And unless what he's going right now is a mirage, he's in the bottom-six when Vancouver breaks camp.

What a novel notion for Canucks fans......a prospect who was actually developed on their AHL team, and improved so much that you can't keep him down. It's not something we're used to seeing.

But there's a half-dozen Abby Canucks who could join him one day. They've all improved by leaps and bounds--and actually propelled themselves into the conversation.

Hopefully the days of the Canucks signing eight or nine UFA's in the off-season, and bringing in the likes of Heinen, Sprong, Brannstrom and Desharnais, are over for good.

The Canucks traded Jonathan Dahlen for Karlsson in early 2019. Now, over 6 years later, he seems on the verge of becoming a full time NHL player at age 25. Pretty amazing. Also an interesting note of trivia: the Canucks traded Alex Burrows to Ottawa to get Dahlen. If I've done the math right, Burrows also made the NHL as a full time player at the age of 25. The Burrows trade went down over 9 years ago.

Yeah he’s probably around 6’2 200lbs. I saw a photo of him standing beside Boeser and he looked a foot and a half taller at least.

I really hope he gets a top 6 look next year. Watching him he kind of reminds me Patric Hornqvist.

He might eventually but that's our problem lots of guys in the bottom 6, our top 6 really sucks and our pipeline has basically Lekk as a legit top 6 forward so all of this talk about trading our 15th is just not a good long term plan.

We need top notch center prospects like 4 years ago now and that problem isn't going away.

Some of the guys in Abby might be able to slide into our bottom 6 and maybe we can leverage trading some guys for draft picks at the deadline if we are out of a playoff spot but the Canucks mentality of not having a forward vision beyond making the playoffs hasn't worked and it won't work.

Completely agree with this. The Canucks depth drafting and development has been excellent in recent years. Many people focus on the top end (ie Lekki) which is obviously very important, but I cannot remember a time when we had so many promising young players who in particular can potentially fill bottom 6 roles (or bottom 9). I also love what Karlsson brings from a 2 way perspective, and that he is a heavier body.

This is exactly what could allow us to move 2 or maybe 3 vets who are getting paid $3-6M and provide us the cap space to sign and retain high end talent. Very promising.

Well next step is the Big Show. Gotta figure he's pencilled in for the big club next year.

Wonder what his ceiling is here? Does he have solid 2nd line production in him?
He has thus far been unproductive at the NHL level. I hope he figures things out but I won’t bet on it.

He was consistently dangerous and his play popped as one of our best forwards most nights in the last 20 games of the season despite bottom-6 icetime with very limited offensive looks.

I actually quite like his game. Hes built in the same mold as guys like Holmstrom/Hornqvist. You need guys like this who are willing to go into the dirty area for goals.

Yeah, his skill set would work well in a top six role as the heavy puck retrieval and net front guy. Just need the right mix of line mates and I think he’d be a key cog in a really effective scoring line.

He looked good net front in garbage time this year.
Don't get me wrong. I was one of his strongest supporters in the past (I liked his size and projected ability to play C), but he's turning 26, he's not a fast skater, so he really needs to convert. Hopefully his performance in the playoffs gives him some leeway as well as confidence to find his game at the NHL level. He did have an uncharacteristically slow start at the SHL level and then turned it around so there's hope that he's a guy that needs some time to figure the league out.

If management think Karlsson can translate to a 30-35 point versatile forward he's a threat to take Joshua or Hoglander's jobs. The savings would be well used elsewhere.
In the long run I'm not sure there will be much savings. If he puts up a 30-35 point season he's probably looking at a Danton Heinan/Drew O'Connor type deal.

All Linus Karlsson does, anywhere he goes, is show that he is a cut above the competition. I really hope he gets a serious shot with the big club. There's nothing left for him to prove at the lower levels.

He's a guy I'd look at trading while his value is at an all-time high. I think he'll be okay as a role player but he's not a top 6 forward, especially at his age. It's extremely rare for players to break out at 25+ in the NHL.
