Confirmed with Link: Linus Karlsson signs 1 year ($775,000) contract extension

He's getting a 1-way $775k deal - who is giving him more than that?

I thought he might go back to Sweden. He has spent 3 years in North America and has pretty much done everything he could at the AHL level with limited number of NHL games to show for it. He is at an age where if he does go back to Sweden he's never coming back so that might have been a motivating factor.

He was starting to look more effective even in limited minutes in his last stint and thought he should've been kept up with the big club. Hope he keeps it up and gets another shot at earning a permanent spot.

I thought he might try to find a bottom dweller that had an easier path to a top 12 spot. But glad to have him back as organizational depth.

Why would he make $150k in Sweden? If you can get any type of one-way NHL contract you do it imo.

hes doing as well as you can imagine in Abbotsford. like 50-60 goal pace. you have to take the chance that he's figuring something out.

I'm not questioning why he signed it. I'm also a bit surprised that we offered him a one-way contract.

But it isn't all about money. Plenty of Swedes who on the surface can earn more money playing in the AHL prefer to play in Sweden or elsewhere in Europe like Switzerland. Soderstrom almost certainly could have gotten more money staying in North America this season and he chose to return to Sweden.

what was his weakness before getting called up? lack of footspeed? hands? last year he was always a third callup choice behind the other abby guys.

Anyone who gets a 1 way contract is staying in NA. The players who went to Europe to play cant get a 1 way contract here. ITs pretty simple.

Also hes good buddys with Aman and Hoggy.

Hes also killing it in the AHL and the fans love him. Get to make 750 k living in Vancouver as a 25 year old guy. Cant say no to that. Going back to SHL = giving up on your NHL dream pretty much.

Something has 'clicked' with Karlsson this season. The issue on every call-up before this year was simple lack of foot-speed. But he really looks to have added a step this off-season.

And if you watch him along the wall, he really is a bit of a slick operator. He can handle the puck in a lot of traffic, and somehow come out with it.

I can understand why the Canucks handed him a one-way contract, and have decided to keep him around for at least one more season.

That is obviously not true.

No disagreement here and I mentioned the NHL dream. Don't get me wrong, I like him a lot (although I doubt he will put things together to be an NHL regular).

Sometimes it's not necessarily that a player gets faster it's that a player starts playing more within their means and reads the game better so they know where to go and when things happen they are in position which helps you play quicker

I think this is something that he's been learning and getting better at as he already was a smart player

"It's a lateral move"

Jimbo after trading for Linus. Dare I say, I think he was wrong about that as well.

I don't think he was wrong. If Karlsson was in Sweden would he be much better offensively than Dahlen? I don't think so. Would Dahlen be much better than Karlsson if Dahlen was playing in the AHL? I don't think so. But at the NHL level, Dahlen has shown more offensively than Karlsson. Don't forget that Dahlen left to go back to Sweden at a younger age than Karlsson is right now.

Anyhow, I thought it was a good trade at the time given the circumstances (I was a big fan of Karlsson as a prospect) but I think it was closer to being generous to call it a lateral move than fair. At the same age, Dahlen's SHL offensive production was better. Offensively Dahlen was a better prospect and overall I would consider him to have been a better prospect given that Karlsson isn't projected to be a C.
