Amazing that people are dumping on Gallant, the guy just overachieved big time. Tell me you thought we were a eastern cofernce finalist this year and ill call you a liar. The team was burnt out from too many games over the last month and a half, injuries with little depth to support them and one of the youngest teams in the league is what happened. It was an amazing first step, more of a leap. This was exactly what this team needed to have happen for the future of this team. Chytil, Miller, and Lafreniere all made a leap ahead this year, an excellent result from this playoffs. The road ahead is much clearer now. We had a great year.

I'm ready to move forward without...

Asking a favor from all my fellow Hfers. If you have ideas about off-season moves and decisions for the future, please also post it on the Roster Building thread.
I’m done here and don’t want to miss hearing your thoughts.
Thanking you in advance.

How's this for a thought. Start from scratch, get a couple of high draft picks, build a roster with a nice mix of seasoned vets and promising youngsters, add a bit of grit, speed and size, march to the Conference Finals and then freakin jump off a ledge. Sounds like a plan that interests me.

Welp, overall, this team far surpassed realistic expectations for this season. Gallant got the team playing a harder brand of hockey. And the deadline trades had a big impact.

We lost mostly because we didn't have anything left in the tank after going back to back 7 game series in the first two rounds. It's nearly impossible to win the cup playing that many games. And we most certainly would not have been able to stop the Avs speed given how banged up we were by game 4 of this series. I can't think of a single player in the lineup that didn't seem slowed by injury or having been overplayed by the end of the series.

Gallant didn't feel comfortable relying on the kid line in the D zone and he then drove his vets into the ground. The 2nd line was rendered unusable pretty early in this series. I'm not saying Gallant was wrong not to trust the Kid Line in their own zone. I don't really trust Chytil in his own zone as a C. And far too often Laf and Kakko were unable to get the puck out along the boards. Same with Schneider. The young kids are really promising, but there's another level of man strength and game experience they lack to get the little things done. That said, they were also our best 5v5 line. Equally as curious was the lack of ice for Motte late in the Tampa Series. His speed was sorely missing. And Vatrano is sometimes great, sometimes weak in puck management. The minute Mika wasn't busting through the middle of the neutral zone, the imperfections in Vatrano's game were more apparent.

The positives:
The long run was immensely helpful to our youth who now have a much better sense of what it takes to win in the league.
The Emergence of K'Andre, Chytil and Laf was great.
Copp MAY be a replacement for Strome.
Igor knows what it takes to win in this league

The less than positives:
The team had to overcome far too many mistakes and lapses. The first two rounds took too much out of the team. We are still relying for too much on Igor.
A long run like this will make the first half of next season really challenging. Gallant overused his vets and we are a worn out squad. All the injuries will take their toll, the offseason will be about recovery, cutting into training for next year. It's going to be a battle next year. We will need fresh blood in the lineup if we want to sniff another run. I hope the org thinks long and hard about the next few years as a window and dont become short sighted about next season.
What happened with Kakko and the scratch? I pray it's just an injury and Gallant wanting another center in the game.

changes that seem obvious:
Let Strome walk
Get Nemeth off the roster
Georgy is gone
expect/need at least one more Young D to make the jump next year.
Consider signing a league minimum vet D

Unknowns
Kakko's future (i hope he's back for many more, just needs to work on his first steps and speed of his decision making and his snarl, but it is getting better). Kakko NEEDS to become a net front presence to have a future in this league. He cannot be perimeter with that size. he needs to become baby kreider in front with those hands.
2C - Copp? Someone else?
Can we afford to keep Kakko or sign a vet 2C if we have to resign Laffy and Miller next year?
What is Fil Chytil's role going forward?
If Strome goes can anyone play with Panarin?
Is there any speed the team can infuse in the lineup?
Do we have a Tyler Motte replacement or 3?
What to do with Blais?
Will Kravtsov be merely a trade chip? I think he might need to play for the Rangers to get any sort of value in return.

Not sure, haven’t had time to process things yet.
The dreamer in me hopes for a miracle where the player’s agent tells them that there is one more year left of escrow payments back to the owners and convince Motte, Vatrano and Copp to gamble and take one year deals and wait for 2023/24 season when the salary cap jumps exponentially. And they all decide that they’ll take a team friendly one year deal because of all the fun they had this post season.

On the bright side, now I can get caught up on my youtube subscriptions....

Whoever is in charge of the defensive structure and coverage should be fired. Get someone more competent in that position. That would go a long way in getting closer to their championship aspirations.

I hope you enjoy your offseason. And really appreciate all the videos you posted. They are much more entertaining and informative than anything posters here have to say.

I do a disappearing act until September. And all I can say about this offseason, is that they need to improve. Status quo won't do. It won't get them to the next level. Laffy and Kakko are not scoring 100 points next year. They will be lucky to get half that. I'm not sure what this team needs to be better, but changes in personnel are generally required. We'll see how it shakes out.

Enjoy, see you in September.

We were 2nd for the Jennings and overall in the playoffs weren't that bad defensively. Our problem is failing to get the puck out of our zone led to mental lapses due to fatigue and bad decisions by our D. How times did Trouba pinch in a 1-0 game? What about Fox? Miller at time was caught trying to force a play on our blue line with no support leading to a mini 2 on 1.

That's the shit that needs to get fixed. Tampa paid the price foe being too aggressive on those type of plays and adjusted their style and made less mistakes. We had zero consistency in those responsible decisions. We pinch if we were up by 2 or down by 2 the same way.

Team really began to run on fumes in game 3. That game is going to bother me for a very long time. It's really the biggest what if this team has had. They hold onto that game, you've got energy just to finish the series. You see the finish line and push through. Would have had nearly a full week off.

The team learned and grew a lot this year. Lafreniere played 99 games this season total. He had 56 the year before. Nearly double the games. Same goes for Miller. Their growth was accelerated this season. Lafreniere in December does not get 9 points in 20 playoff games, and on top of that was snake bitten.

This was the most exciting season of Rangers hockey I think I've ever watched. They've played big series and games, played for the cup in 2014, but this one just feels different. Memorable games on top of that.

To take the next step, the organization needs to continue moving in the young players. Guys like Jones, Kravtsov (if he stays), Othmann, Robertson, Cuylle, etc need to get the chance to play and carve out roles. Some off GGs toys need to be taken away too.

When it boils down to it, I think we are seeing the beginning of something special. They check a bunch of boxes for teams that win. #1C, franchise D, and a franchise goalie. Learn, grow, build the scar tissue from this run to set up the next 4-5 years.

People are not dumping on Gallant for losing in 6 to Tampa, it’s mostly about his unjustifiable decision to bench Kakko for talentless players like Hunt.

The Great One has spoken

What does he mean by no cap?

Really interesting summer coming up. Not a ton of wiggle room cap wise, but lots of potential to see some pretty significant moves made.

Hopefully the plan is to work Jones in on the 3rd pair next year. I liked Braun for what he was (and he'd be a fine 7th D if he wants to take a cut and stay.)

Panarin better bust his ass this summer and come into next season in shape and ready to rip the face off the league.

The disciplinary thing has been all over the boards for hours now and it gets legs because of how GG is treating questions about the lineup decisions and the scratch. It adds up pretty well, actually. If it was just a normal "coaching decision" or "shaking things up to see if we can get a boost" that's real easy to say, GG says it all the time, and could have easily said it here.
You're way overthinking it. The bolded is your problem. Have Brooks or Staple or Vince or anyone actually connected to the team indicated anything along these lines?

By far the most likely explanation is that Gallant was pissed that Strome or medical staff overstated how good to go he was. You don't throw either the player (who is well liked and a good team guy) or your medical staff under the bus in a press conference.

But people's frustrations over Kakko's disappointing development to date cause them to create all kinds of BS in the information void, and it gets amplified over social media among others who want to believe the same thing.
