News: Lightning GM Julien Brisebois says it’s ‘unlikely’ top prospect Isaac Howard signs with club

That seems like a total misread of the situation to me. For this season, only one team could give him what he wanted (that being TBL) and they didn’t. All this impass tells me is his go-forward plan is not TBL - read that as only one team he doesn’t want to play for. There is absolutely nothing that suggests there is only one team he wants to play. Seems like nothing more than baseless projection on your part.
He’s got until Aug 2026 and he’s a UFA. He’s an elc guy regardless of where he signs. There are caps on these players. He’s got one club in mind. Tamia would trade him but all the other clubs know the player won’t sign unless it’s his one club of choice. And that one club won’t give up assets for a guy they will get for free next August.

And if he was willing to sign with any club he’d sign with Tampa, right?

Not necessarily. If the previous reports about him negotiating a contract with Tampa and wanting to burn a year off ELC are true, and Tampa unwilling to do that, there simply could be some resentment.

Clearly this guy has one club in mind he wants to play for.

Not necessarily. If you believe what JBB relayed about their conversation, is that he at this moment *wants to be able to choose the team*. It doesn't follow that he has made the choice already.

His trade value will reflect that. No club will offer more than a late pick in hopes they can convince him to commit the next seven years to them.
Tampa knows he’s waiting until Aug 2026. They will take the compensation pick. It’s more than what they could get for him now in trade. We will see him as a 22 year old in 2026 on the club he’s wanted. He might be surprised the nhl is a meritocracy and he’s in the AHL because he’s not good enough.

Which of my scenarios you refer to? I am assuming the 1st one, where the team sends a 2nd + conditional 1st/2nd to Tampa. This is based on the premise that the new team gets Howard's comensation 2nd if he doesn't sign with them, so they are simply moving to the end of the 2nd round if they aren't successful in convincing Howard to sign with them. You think that's too much?

You still haven’t given any to support that the one club he has in mind isn’t TBL, but for the wrong reason. If that org was a dick to him in negotiations, they may have poisoned the well and he may be looking at literally anywhere else. The notion that there is only one other team he is willing to sign with seems like something you yanked out your crack.

The issue is he wants NHL time right away with out actually showing that he actually deserves it. What is he gonna do if he doesn't get that after he signs with a team? Demand a trade?
He’d be in danger of being blackballed by NHL GM’s possibly

If he’s traded, it’ll be a similar deal to McGroarty last year.

He’s worth more than a second round pick, and Brisebois is using this to get a bidding war for this prospect.

Brisebois seems to be saying he values his right to go to ufa and pick his team.

Why would teams give up assets.

Sorry to inform you but no club is paying an asset for this guy unless Tampa gives that club the right to negotiate a contract with him prior to any trade. And Tampa wont do that. So this kid will be a UFA at 22. I don’t like his chances to be an NHLer, to be honest.

Sure, but they'd be dumb not to.

None of the other 31 teams are going to give them anything of value without talking to Howard's reps and getting their thoughts on signing with the team.

It's basically a requirement in a Howard trade.
Tampa is certain to get a late 2nd as comp if he does not sign. Any offer needs to exceed that

I haven’t followed it closely on his wanting to sign with a team.

If He signed after college it’s a 3 yr ELC, after college next year it’s a 2 yr ELC. He can just wait and play college instead of A.
I wish they change that rule and force them to sign with the team that drafted them. Untitled brat
As a 1st rd pick, tamoa gets a comp pick if he does not sign

Rather he plays college or ends up with another NHL team next season is irrelevant if he's not good enough to remain on a NHL roster at the start of his pro career, he's gonna end up in the AHL no matter which NHL organization he'll be part of. And theres a fair chance thats what ends up happening. That's all i am saying.

Agreed, they wouldn't give a 2nd, but Hyman only wanted to sign with the Leafs so they trade McKegg and iirc a 5th for him.

And who says he's gonna limited him cause that can easily mean he ends up in the AHL especially if that one club choice doesn't have a spot for him in the NHL nor doesn't want to rush him into the NHL.

Hawks have assets that could interest TB if he is willing to sign with Chicago
And there’s the rub. If he’s willing to sign elsewhere. What would Chicago give up for him without that commitment? Is the risk he goes back to school and becomes a UFA Aug 2025 worth a mid round pick?

Do Hawks get compensation if they trade for him and he doesn't sign? If so then obviously a 2nd for him is worth it

If not, then you only trade if given permission to speak to him and his agent

any deal starts with a 2nd at a minimum and goes from there.

if you're offering a 2nd + a mid round pick it's not going to happen and quite literally any team would take that risk to try to sign him.

I think the tim erxion trade from the flames yrs back is the comp, 1st round pick, refuses to sign so theres a comp pick. Erxion who was well regarded at the time, was traded for 2 2nds and a tweener prospect

Increasingly becoming an issue with these American prospects. Wonder if it becomes a cause for pause come draft time for some teams

I also wonder how that is going to change the landscape entirely considering CHL kids can now jump to the NCAA. Will those NCAA rules also transfer to those kids drafted out of the CHL?

Yes. The player gets traded, he comes with the comp.

No team is going to give up more than the comp if they acquire him and he does not sign with them.

Next year After NCAA season Chicago could set up a deal with Tampa after the season you negotiate and sign him for say a 2nd but Chicago would not fo that if they can't sign him

Thank you for sharing your opinion.

If people are wondering what team Howard might be interested in, he grew up in a Wisconsin town that’s less than <30 minutes from the Wild’s arena.
