News: Lightning GM Julien Brisebois says it’s ‘unlikely’ top prospect Isaac Howard signs with club

People here keep saying this but it's baseless. The reason he didn't sign with Tampa is they were going to send him to the AHL and he wanted to play in the NHL
Yeah maybe but at this point in negotiations he can pretty much sign with whoever he wants anyway.

Doesn’t Howard have one more year of college to become a UFA Aug 2026?
Sounds like Brisbois will let that play out and take the compensation (31st pick in round 2 of the 2027 draft)
With this guy going back to school and wanting to become a UFA I can’t see any club offering Tampa a pick (or other asset) the equivalent, or better, for his rights. It would be a waste. Seems like this guy has a club in mind he prefers.

What about something around Willander and Howard? Canucks seemed to have ruined the relationship with Willander.

Howard
Rights to Gourde

For

Willander

My best guess is this guy is a lock to be a Panther or Golden Knight. Warm weather and low taxes, bro!

Gourde looks pretty cooked...really cooked if you are just going by the playoffs. I certainly don’t think his UFA rights have any value.

The idea of a disgruntled Howard for a disgruntled Willander is interesting - but if both are equally not wanting to sign in their status quo orgs - I’d still value Willander significantly higher as a prospect (and I like Howard).

Willander on Tampa would be epic…he’s exactly the kind of mobile, high end modern defenseman they need badly…he could even apprentice next to his compatriot, Hedman.

I don’t think that swap is great for Vancouver…

I could see him being a great fit in Detroit if he wants to stay close. Wings don’t really have any bonafide top 6 wingers after DeBrincat and Raymond once Kane leaves or retires. Not a lot of competition for a top 6 spot either in the prospect pool with MBN a few years away at least and most of the prospect wingers having less success and pedigree. He’s have a pretty wide open shot at a top 6 role and even 2nd unit PP time very quickly.

is his value an early 2nd or a team with multi 1sts offer a late 1st?

Canucks could offer 2025 2nd & prospect Klimovich/Karlsson someone else

Tampa will get pick 63 in the 2027 draft as compensation for this kid finishing college and becoming a UFA Aug 2026. They might consider a higher second rounder in an early draft to move him. But why would any club off that much considering they don’t get to talk to the player to see if he’s willing to sign? He seems like a guy who has one club in mind and will play out his fourth college season to get that opportunity. Any offer will likely be a waste of a second rounder or the equivalent.

They can talk to him if Tampa allows it I think.

Yes. But if Tampa isn’t allowing clubs to talk to the player what does that suggest about the player’s desire to play one more year in college and become a UFA? Maybe Tampa knows the player’s desire to play for one specific club? That club might know too. Pick 63 isn’t bad compensation.

You're operating under the assumption that Howard wants to play for a single club. I think plenty of teams will pay a 2nd+ as a minimum to try to talk him into signing/getting him to development camp.

Howard will probably fetch a 1st or a decent enough prospect + a pick and it wouldn't remotely shock me to see Howard sign to play next season with another org.

Doubtful. Imo he plays another season in college and in Aug 2026 sign with the club he’s planned to sign with all along. The compensation pick (63) is too high for another club to go higher than just in hopes this guy will sign. Then that club has to develop this guy and hope that he’s not just another small winger who is more of an ahler than an NHLer. I think clubs would rather use their second rounders on 18 year olds who they see as having a lot more runway of growth and development than a guy who is already 21.

you don't think teams would trade a higher 2nd rounder for the chance to sign this kid? idk why you're so desperate to die on this hill but that is delusional lol

He’s already 21. How much more growth and development does he have compared to an 18 year old? It’s not like he’s proven himself in the AHL or NHL. Add in he’s a UFA in a year and the risk is just way too much considering the offer would need to be better than the compensation.

Why?

Honest question, I don't really know anything about his off-ice stuff.

Yeah…this isn’t a Trevor Connolly situation. He’s a cringy 20 year-old. Who is doing nothing that the existing rules don’t allow.

The posts showing his preferences and social media stuff as a teenager to try to suggest that we should think about this guy as something more than a high level prep/collegiate athlete with a pro future and maybe some of the ego and privileges that come with that are way more cringy than the kid.

He’s probably got some growing up to do. Big deal.

The NCAA is the best NHL like competition outside of pro hockey and he just won the award as the best player. I think we can definitively say he’s developed, and he would obviously need to come signed for a deal to happen in the first place.

If we can’t get him to sign and trade we likely just take the compensation pick

He’s not signed. Tampa can only trade his rights.

Well I guess it’s a good thing the Lightning can give other teams permission to negotiate contracts with players whom they own the rights to
And why then, considering your point, is the guy still Tampa property? Could it be because he has one club in mind he will play for and when teams find that out they walk away? Or is it no team sees a second round pick as fair value for him?
