OT: Lets talk about stocks (Part 3)

Maybe because you're coming across as not knowing what you're talking about?

I get that every day here but I'm right a lot more then I'm wrong in 25 years of being on this message board every day, it has never stopped. But this is HF where you don't need to watch the hockey games, we have posters that can just look at Owen Beck's stats and tell you what he will turn into in 10 years. Just like we have people that say work in customer service but think they know high finance better then people that work in high finance.

I never said I was an expert on tariffs but I know what's going on better then most and I would bet my life on that.

As of April 2025, several countries have implemented retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in response to President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs. Here are the top 10 notable examples:

1. China

• Tariff Rates: Initially imposed a 34% tariff on all U.S. imports, escalating to 125% by April 12.

• Additional Measures: Restricted exports of rare earth elements, blacklisted 11 U.S. firms, suspended imports from American agricultural producers, and initiated an anti-monopoly investigation into DuPont China.

2. Canada

• Tariff Rates: Implemented 25% tariffs on U.S. steel, aluminum, and non-USMCA-compliant vehicles.

• Scope: Tariffs cover approximately $20.6 billion worth of U.S. goods.

3. European Union

• Tariff Rates: Announced tariffs on €4.5 billion of U.S. consumer goods and €18 billion of U.S. steel and agricultural products.

• Status: Implementation delayed for 90 days to allow for negotiations.

4. India

• Tariff Rates: Imposed retaliatory tariffs on 28 U.S. products, with some levies reaching up to 70%.

• Affected Goods: Apples, almonds, walnuts, lentils, and certain chemical products.

5. Mexico

• Tariff Rates: Implemented tariffs on approximately $3 billion worth of U.S. goods.

• Affected Goods: Steel, pork, cheese, whiskey, and apples.

6. South Africa

• U.S. Tariff: Faced a 31% tariff from the U.S. on April 2.

• Response: Opted not to retaliate with tariffs but announced plans to diversify export markets and postponed the sale of gems from Petra Diamonds’ Cullinan Mine due to tariff uncertainties.

7. Vietnam

• U.S. Tariff: Subjected to a proposed 46% tariff on its exports to the U.S.

• Response: Signaled readiness for trade negotiations in response to the proposed tariffs.

8. Japan

• Response: Expressed regret over U.S. tariffs and established a task force to assess the impact, indicating a preference for diplomatic engagement over immediate retaliatory tariffs.

9. Indonesia

• Response: Chose diplomatic channels to address the U.S. tariffs and implemented support measures for affected domestic sectors.

10. Australia

• Response: Criticized the U.S. tariffs but refrained from imposing retaliatory measures, opting instead for diplomatic discussions.

These retaliatory actions reflect the global response to the U.S.’s recent tariff policies, highlighting the complexities and tensions in international trade relations.

Many countries are chosing to negotiate because the world does not have much of a choice. If your buddy id firing bullets through the hull of the boat we’re all sailing on saying they want to renegotiate who gets all the baloney sndwitches for lunch you don’t have much of a choice bot to go « chill, jere are the lunchboxes ».

everyone of them walked it back but China and their partners in Canada. Why is that?

whoever is feeding you info, you should get it from somewhere else. You just posted a list of countries that hit back but then they changed their minds because they don't want people to lose money in the stock market or they don't have a gun (how many countries have nukes?)

When the US put tariffs on Canada, and we got Mike Myers telling us to buy local, when China puts tariffs on Canada, not a peep. Wake up

Putting Tariffs on Canada because of a "bad" trade deal they signed last time they were last in office.

I posted that blurb in good faith as a status check; it’s been changing daily.

I don’t get « fed info ». I don’t buy local because of Mike Myers. I don’t mind the respectful back and forth but let’s not act like 8th graders. I hear the white house bully and lie first hand live and see the markets and countries react.

By GUN I mean the US has the power to crash world markets and has. It justifies doing it through lies about inexistant unfair trade (the milk tariffs are MADE UP for example - can you acknowledge that at least?). He does not really hold our lunch boxes either, that is a metaphor.

so is China bad for putting tariffs on Canada?

If the US is bad for putting tariffs on Canada, how is it any different for China?
If this has turned into a battle of good vs evil for you I am unsure I am of much help.

Free trade is good for the economy. China is imposing tariffs on Canada because of their alignment with the us on trade policies on metal and EV’s from what I can tell.

You’re out of luck. This has turned into a tariffs thread. :sarcasm:
Well the stock market is so volatile because of them and this is the stocks thread? I feel at least there is some exchange and not just silly « left-right » finger pointing like twitter or Reddit.

the US trade war?

think about it...

Ask yourself why the US says they want Canada, Greenland, Panama Cannel. If the only answer you can come up with is he's a bad man then it that says everything. I don't want to offend anyone but most people are clueless about everything, most people are asleep their entire lives, wake up go to work, go home watch tv or sports and repeat 5 times a week.

There is no doubt people are being told one thing while a very different thing is happening and they say nothing.

I guess it wasn't clear enough when he said himself he wanted to take over both countries...

I can confidently say no good world leader has ever threatened annexation of their trade partners and allies.

Convo was about how trade deficits have nothing to do with respect and how free trade is better than tariffs. Not sure what else you’re reading into.

I am much more curious you tell us what we clearly are missing than whether not knowing it makes us clueless zombies about everything (something you are keeping to yourself? Sounds like something you should share..).
