OT: Let's talk about Movies and TV Shows, Part XXX (...how can this possibly go wrong)

Are some of you seriously arguing about characters?

It's like me yelling at the tv...DOUBLE TAP, DOUBLE TAP OR IT'S GOING TO GET UP AGAIN

Dammit, those guys never listen to me...:help:
Do you get this feeling too around here with some of the subject matter?:dunno:

I just finished Tehran 3 seasons and...really enjoyed it.

Besides the movie, most of it was shot in Greece and it brought up memories of what Greek inner citie houses/buildings looks like. Car plates in Iran are in Farsi so it was humorous picking off car plates in Greek.

Anywho...interesting series and recommend. If you have Apple tv it may be available to you.
Guess they couldn't find a better/safer match for Tehran.:dunno:
Not a fan of Athens and hate driving there.

Been a while but it was terrific. A couple other stand out with Welles: Touch of evil and Citizen Kane. After seeing Kane, I'm convinced he was a stoner in those days.

:partytime:

I watched Touch of Evil around the same time in the 90s in rentals as well. It was around the time where I was on a classic movies discovery after they started restoring movies and put them on VHS. It became a gold mine for a couple of years. lol Touch of Evil, I liked it well enough but it was uneven. Like Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. Where you realise that there's something there but it doesn't come together well enough. I heard years later that the movie had been taken away from Orson and they butchered it. Years later I bought the restored movie based on the original intentions of Orson but I have yet watched it(I have a huge collection and most of my movies I have not watched yet! lol )

Just finished watching it. Well written with a good plot. Hugh Laurie is quite good in this. The characters he plays now (House etc...) have evolved quite a bit since the days of Black Adder.

Like most inner city Euro cities, Athens is not for Canadian drivers. You have to be fast acting and fully aware of your surroundings ...or carry a lot of insurance. Basically Canadian city driving at 2x reflex/reaction speed.

Try riding a motorcycle there. It's mental...

...Yeh, in terms of which is better between Notorious! and The Third Man, I'm clearly leaning towards Notorious!. There aren't many 40ies movies that should've been longer, and Notorious! is one of them.

Pretty sure I watched the newer cut and it’s fantastic. Welles was a genius of the highest order. A technician on par with Hitchcock and Kubrick imo.

I thought the same when I first saw Eyes Wide Shut but now I think it’s one of his best. Time is doing it wonders.

Ditto with AI, the Spielberg/ Kubrick collab. Thought it was okay when I first saw it now I think it’s an absolute masterpiece. Rarely are movies that guy-wrenching and thought provoking.

Your memory must be better than mine and not sure what you mean being uneven, find that a lot of movies don't keep with what has passed, whatever. I can shred apart anything I watch as there are always something that is just wrong. As long as whatever keeps me interested I can let if go but at times I practically get worked up into a lather. My mrs will tell me to relax and take it easy, I just look at her and say, ''that's one''

Good thing I'm not Canadian then is it. I've had a place in Greece for decades and go into Athens a couple of time a year and have been riding a bike since I was a kid, but I take a car for practical reason. I'll take driving in Athens everyday over some other places I've come across, some you can't drive after dark, you can, but you shouldn't, way too dangerous.:eek2:

The Count of Monte Cristo 8-part series produced in 2024 and released in January is thoroughly enjoyable. Dumas’ novel has seen many versions over the years but never as compelling and spectacular as this series.

The settings are beautiful and the format allows for proper character development.

The best version prior to this, IMHO, was the 2002 production starring Jim Caviezel.

The series is becoming more and more available on several platforms so you should be able to find it, shoukd you want to give it a shot.

The 1998 or so, 6.5+ hour-long (4 x around 100 minutes), French production (with Gérard Depardieu, Ornella Muti, Jean Rochefort, amongst others) was MUCH better than the 2002 production (despite some 90ies trapping and the weird way they got around trying Depardieu not having a slave-wife). Having young Edmond and young Fernand played by the sons of Gérard Depardieu and Jean Rochefort was a super nice touch, too.

Hell, the 2024 French movie was actually very good too, despite its ... let's just say, free adaptation of the third act (and the laughably bad comeuppance of ONE of the villains)..

EDIT : Oh, Jeremy Irons as Faria. Irons would've made a TERRIFIC Villefort 25 years ago.

You cant count me out in some African or Asian cities. I'm not a great driver...when drivers make their own rules.

To me, Athens isn't crazy, just conjested and the lane spliters make it worse. No daydreaming or your going to lose a mirror or a fender. No comparison to Canadian urban driving. In the small Greek towns, downright tame and other then narrow streets, Greeks follow the rules...most of the time.
