Dwight Helminen.

A day or two after we traded for Bure, my brother and I got to be "GM for a day" from a Casino Night auction. I remember talking to Sather and he asked how I liked the Bure trade. I don't remember what I said about that, but I remember saying I wish we could get Malhotra back, and saying that I liked the signing of Helminen because he played with Lundmark in Seattle (back then I had been listening to radio feeds of Seattle playoff games). Sather was surprised that I knew that.
Are you thinking of Barret Heisten? These details don't seem to fit Helminen.

I have a question for you because you might be old enough to remember. About 25 years ago, I bought a DOS computer hockey simulation game which had multiple seasons with it. One of the seasons was 1957-58, which my dad used to play with me. He loved it, because the Rangers happened to be half decent that season, and the simulation had them finish 2nd as in real life, but they trounced the Bruins in the first round, and then lost to Montreal in 6.

However, there was one Ranger on that team that he could not remember - Hank Ciesla. He remembered everyone on that team in vivid detail, except for Ciesla.
I remember the name but not much about him. I actually know him better as an American Hockey League guy with Pittsburgh and Buffalo. When I was a kid I could listen to the Baltimore Clippers games on radio and follow the AHL.The Clippers were a Rangers farm team. I always thought his name was kinda cool. (Hey, I was 11 or 12!)

Yeah, that must be it. I thought for sure it was Helminen. Old age catching up to me.

Yeah it was Heisten.

Helminen was the stocky center prospect out of Michigan was acquired in the Nedved trade who we thought my someday challenge Blair Betts for his spot. Had a great rookie season in the AHL and then he just kept sliding.

Heisten was a former first round pick of the Sabres. Good college scorer, went to the WHL and played with Lundmark, signed with us as a free agent. Made the team out of camp and then the wheels completely fell off.

Those were good times.

Dave Farrish ...had some decent NHL years and managed to play over 400 NHL games . According to Hockey DB...14 teams he played for during his career from Junior onward....that is a lot I think.

Former first round pick Bob MacMillan played 22 games as a Ranger before he was dealt to the Blues....then average 50+ points a season for the next 11 . Not that great a deal for us LOL . I remember reading in our local daily about his only goal as a Ranger back then. He wore # 12 as a Ranger . His son was drafted by the Ducks a few years ago...bad pick. I don't think I have ever seen a pic of him in a Ranger uniform.

Václav Nedomanský is a name that popped up this week (The arena in Hodonin where the U20 tournament is held this weekend, is named after him)

Raimo Helminen played 2 yrs with the Rangers in the mid '80s.
Kjell Samuelsson took care of his own end pretty well.
Jean Yves Roy, Barry Richter, and Joby Messier.

I think the wheels came off of every prospect or young player that we acquired over a 10-12 year period.

Also, lots of reclamation prospects by Sather that seemingly flared out every single time!

That whole time period... it seemed like only one pick/prospect would meet or beat expectations, and that was Dan Blackburn. Of course, naturally for that period, his freak shoulder/nerve injury cost him his career. It somehow felt even worse since he wasn't even playing hockey at the time. It was a terrible time to be a fan.

I know the Rangers did hire Blackburn at one point. I have no idea if he's still with the team, but hopefully he's got a nice job somewhere in hockey.

Jay More was certainly a forgotten Ranger, both times he played for the team.

I still remember being bummed about trading Tim Erixon.

RIP
Yeah, I thought he would at least make it somewhere in the NHL, kid was always traded. His dad doesn't get enough recognition as a defensive center, I remember him being pretty good on the PK.

He absolutely drove Maryo crazy. I think Lemieux compared him to a bad smell that you cannot shake. One of the best defensive forwards ever for the Rangers. Was he a center though?
I thought he played some center, you're correct...he's listed as RW. For some reason I remember him taking faceoffs but my memory is what it is. Either way, yeah, Jan was stellar.
