I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but here goes. Please move it if it doesn't belong.

Rank all the competitive leagues in the world.

I tried to base it loosely on how different players have performed at various levels.
The top three are pretty much locks, but from there it gets harder.

My top 20 list:

#1 - NHL
#2 - KHL
#3 - AHL
#4 - NLA (Switzerland)
#5 - SHL (Sweden)
#6 - Liiga (Finland)
#7 - DEL (Germany)
#8 - Extraliga (Czech Republic)
#9 - ECHL
#10 - The CHL (OHL, QMJHL, WHL)
#11 - Allsvenskan (Sweden)
#12 - The Austrian Hockey League
#13 - NLB (Switzerland)
#14 - Get-Ligaen (Norway)
#15 - Metal Ligaen (Denmark)
#16 - Hockeyettan (Sweden)
#17 - Mestis (Finland)
#18 - USHL
#19 - EIHL (United Kingdom)
#20 - Ligue Magnus (France)

You're missing the NCAA

Could you please explain why you have EIHL over Ligue Magnus? Thank you.

Nottingham did better than Briançon in last years Champions Hockey League.
That's what I took into consideration since I have basically zero knowledge of the French or British league.

That's a horrible list.

No way the CHL is that high. Men vs Boys

I also think there could be made a mathematical formula based on the rankings if they are placed correctly.

Let's say a NHL player has a PPG of 1.0. I would expect that player to have increasingly higher PPG the further down the list we go.

Let's use Alex Ovechkin as an example.

NHL PPG 1.18
KHL PPG 1.29

That is roughly a 9 percent higher PPG in the KHL compared to NHL.
In other words, Ovie "should" get a PPG of 1,4 in the AHL and 1,53 in the NLA. I would say those numbers are realistic, and therefore this could be used to rank the leagues.

On the bottom, we could expect Ovie to put up 2,56 PPG in the OHL, whick still sounds reasonable.

Some leagues are more even than others, so the 9 percent increase would not be completely correct all the time, but instead, we could rather put leagues that are close to the same level in the same seeding groups with a determined percentage increase.

is the NLA really better than SHL or Liiga?

I think to believe so, even though SHL might have better top teams such as Skelleftea. In my opinion, the NLA is better all round.

Liiga is not better than the NLA, certainly not better than the SHL.

After some consideration, I might think it would be better to have the leagues sorted in groups.
1. NHL
2. KHL, AHL
3. NLA, SHL, Liiga

and so on..

A previous classmate and teammate of mine played for the Drummonville Voltigeurs in the Q, and he said the league was better and more competetive than the Norwegian league (27 games in the Q, 173 in the Norway league). He said the biggest difference was the physical aspect, like you pointed out, but that's it.

EDIT: Also, please elaborate on how this list is "horrible". Would you rank the leagues in a totally different way?

In terms of level of competition? Sorry, I don't see a bunch of kids beating men. Even a tough EIHL team (most of whom are comprised of ex CHL, NCAA guys) would physically pound a CHL team into submission.

I know for a fact Russian VHL would destroy any MHL junior team, and MHL is relatively comparable to CHL. VHL is probably Allsvenskan level of play. NCAA and CIS are probably ahead of CHL too because of age.

I'll do a top 10:
1. NHL
2. KHL
3. SHL
4. AHL
5. Liiga
6. NLA
7. DEL
8. Extraliga
9. Allsvenskan
10. VHL

I totally forgot I about the Russian minor leagues.

Disagree completely. The NLA-teams have good top players but the teams don't have anywhere near the depth the SHL or Liiga teams have.

And the CHL-leagues better than Allsvenskan? That's ridiculous.

Well, taking the Champs Hockey League into consideration, how on earth can you list NLA ahead of SHL and Liiga?

I think you are missing the Slovak Extraliga, although it definitely isn't among the top leagues anymore, it definitely belongs to the list if we are talking top20.

I would really like to know how you can rank NLA over SHL or Liiga when last year in the quorterfinals there were 4 SHL teams and 4 Liiga teams.

I dont see EBEL here and also dont see the reason why DEL is ahead of Extraliga..

It's because there are tons of Canadians/Americans that push the quality up. Though personally I also think Extraliga is better.

MY top list:
1. NHL
2. KHL (only the top teams, SHL, Liiga or NLA can beat average teams on any day.)
3. SHL (because of depth)
4. Liiga
5. NLA
6. Extraliga
7. AHL
8. EBEL (EBEL top teams would beat DEL top teams.)
9. DEL
10. Allsvenskan

Disagree with the AHL being the 7th best. You can make an argument for it being the 3rd best behind NHL/KHL.

Well it's really difficult imo to rank the AHL because there is no comparison. In 2013 the Rochester Americans played in Europe:
vs. Genève-Servette HC (NLA) 0:5 and vs. CSKA Moscow (KHL) 3:4 probably the results would be diffrent on NA ice.
