What's shocking to me is how little the Cardinals gave up. Did they consult a wizardry book on how to put a spell on the Rockies GM? I mean seriously, this is like textbook sorcery. In the 1680s Mo and Girsch would be burned as witches.

I see lots of talk about the Rockies tacking on $50 million in addition to Arenado. I have yet to see an explanation for that, though.

Seems the Rockies were REALLY desperate to move that contract. He’s had some incredible seasons there that didn’t really result in much team success, so they did what they had to do to move it. I guess they’re going to try to win by committee like the Rays did last year. Problem with that is teams like the Dodgers who spread their money out too, but they spread it out to superstars because they have basically limitless resources.

re-sign Yadi and Wong

2B Wong
1B Goldschmidt
3B Arenado
RF Carlson
SS Dejong
LF O'neil
C Molina
CF Bader

With Bader, O'neil, Edman, Fowler, Thomas, etc platooning throughout the year. Looks decent, should compete for NL Central

Look at that defense. Try to convince me that Armstrong isn’t moonlighting in the Cardinals FO

It’s been a while since I’ve been excited for baseball to start. I think we are still 1-2 pieces away from being able to compete with the Dodgers/Padres tier teams.

I honestly think that the only prospect we gave up that could make us regret it is Gil; I think he could be an above-average infielder. Montero, while I like his bat, had trouble in Double-A and will likely be limited to first base. Locey's fastball is great, but I doubt he's more than a power reliever. Gomber would've been a solid starter, but Coors tends to kill curveballs, and Gomber relies on his curveball, which is normally pretty good. Sommers is a shot in the dark.

I'm happy that we kept Torres and Rondon, and Woodford could end up being solid as well if he plays up to his potential. And I don't know about y'all, but if/when he's ready next year or two, I'd play Gorman in left, get a solid left-handed bat in the lineup.

I'm also hoping Yadi re-signs. I'm praying for a DH so that we can get Carpenter's bat in the lineup, if he ever regains his form. Imagine this lineup:

1. Matt Carpenter (DH)
2. Dylan Carlson (RF)
3. Nolan Arenado (3B)
4. Paul Goldschmidt (1B)
5. Paul DeJong (SS)
6. Yadier Molina (C)
7. Tyler O'Neill (LF)
8. Harrison Bader (CF)
9. Tommy Edman (2B)

How does that sound?

The Cards just decided to end the inning with the bases loaded and 1 out because Flaherty was at 23 pitches. So weird. The Nationals just had to come in to the dugout and start playing defense when the Cards only recorded one out. Really bizarre.

EDIT: And now Flaherty is back out to start the second....I really don’t understand.

Max 23 pitches per inning thing now in spring training? I guess both teams agreed to abide by this, if it isn’t a league-wide thing.

No because in the bottom of that inning the Nats pitcher threw like 26. Mo called Danny Mac in between half innings to explain. Apparently managers just have the ability to call it an inning if their guy is gassed and they don’t have anyone loose...which like, okay. Whatever. It’s a little weird, but there’s no sense in throwing a guy’s arm off in the first game of Spring Training. The really weird thing was Flaherty went back out for the next inning. If he was going to throw more pitches anyway, why not just continue the previous inning? Just a strange sequence of events.

Apparently managers are calling each other the night before to see how many innings they’re going to play each day, and make other arrangements. Schildt was being interviewed during the game and said that even if the Cards had the lead going into the bottom of the ninth, the Nats manager said they were going to pitch the bottom of the ninth to give each team more work.

I think the last time I went to a Cardinals game might have been 2007. Hoping we're in the stands by May in semi-decent numbers, I'm trying to line up a 6-person group for a friend's birthday.

I have no idea why they put Flaherty back out there. He was already laboring after the 1st so why send him back out to make it worse? Now his confidence has taken a hit. I have no doubt he'll be fine but it just seemed unnecessary for the first spring training game.

Alcantra-Flaherty would’ve been a pretty nice 1-2 punch for the rotation.
