Lehtonen recalled - Barabanov to taxi squad.

Im guessing waivers aren’t a concern for either player or are there different rules for the taxi squad?

I believe both of them don't need to go through waivers.

It is partly the reason why I think Mikko started as the 7th D on the taxi squad. To bring Mikko up into the lineup, one of the current 6 D or the 3rd G (Dell) have to be sent down and clear waivers.

I am not sure what the plan is here, wait until there is an injury or they have accumulated sufficient cap space to squeeze in Mikko? Because in order to get Mikko to play, they have to send someone down currently. Or they may be waiting until they think they can sneak Dell down into the taxi squad through waivers.

I hope they had a conversation with Mikko before coming over. I am assuming he wanted to play in the NHL and not sit on a taxi squad.

Thanks. So is one player losing money so another can earn?

There are different salaries depending on whether you are on the NHL or non-NHL roster.
They are trying to give Lehtonen days where he is getting an "NHL" salary. Barabanov will get his non-NHL salary on days when he is not on the NHL roster.

If there are no injuries soon, I think they will try to sneak Dell down through waivers into the taxi squad at some point. Then use that cap hit to get Mikko up with the NHL squad. Because at some point they are going to want to play Mikko. He is clearly not the 7th best D on the squad.

The taxi squad right now only has 5 players on it. The limit is 6.
So if they can sneak Dell down, it would also give them more cap space.

Right so one player is losing money in a sense. Surprised Lehtonen isn’t on a one way deal. I’ve never seen him play, look forward to seeing what he brings

There's got to be more to this than meets the eye.

Did Lehtonen's agent intervene?

Would the Leafs play with 11 F and 7 D?

The logical thing would be to send them both down on non-game days, thereby shortening the number of days needed to bring both up full-time -- or if not either or both of these two, then enough players for a 22-man roster.

This doesn't make much sense.

Is it just an arrangement to give half a loaf, salary-wise, to each player?

What about the other guys on the taxi squad? Will they get a dip in the trough too?

Cap schmap! I'm sure they'll play Lehtonen soon enough. Hopefully Barabanov can impress with his minutes.

if Dubie is informing Mirtle on his reasons behind his every move and having him leak it maybe it's time they officially hire him

Here here. Say nothing to nobody. Let us fans wonder, guess and argue.
the fans will argue who be in the lineup regardless

and why leak that Barbonov will be back up and playing while Lehtonen will sent down and not dressing through Mirtle ? why not just do it themselves ?

They're buddies they talk. Mirtle probably just texted him what's up?

It is hard to bring anyone up from the taxi squad because they only have 500k+ in cap to spare.

Obviously if there is an injury, they can call someone up but I assume they will want to rotate players before someone gets injured.

The only move they have that doesn't involve waivers is sending down Barabanov for another winger (e.g. Robertson). They could also send down Barabanov and go 7D too.

I believe at some point they will try to send Dell down to the taxi squad and risk he get claimed on waivers, rather than continue to carry 3 goalies. As soon as they do that they can play musical chairs with the taxi squad and carry 19 skaters at a time on the roster. Meaning they could scratch a skater each game without sending them down.

To provide a clear rational as to whats happening with these moves?

GMs leak this sort of stuff to media guys all the time. Hardly unique to Mirtle and the Leafs front office. Not exactly must keep secret kind of stuff...

I dont really see whats to complain about getting this kind of info
