It seemed like a very weird draft for Montreal... like they're trying to go full Detroit (Datsyuk Zetterberg) by drafting players from obscure backgrounds.
I admit to have never seen any of these players play, and its mostly later round picks. What grinds my gears is when they're selected seemingly at random, or when we are told "he's a great athlete, we just need to teach him hockey"... I'm no pro GM but I'm sure its easier to teach a guy to go to the gym than to develop that elusive "hockey sense"...
Also maybe they were BPA, but the string of D-men selected in a row smells fishy. These guys won't be ready before 3-4-5 years maybe, if even. your holes won't be the same at that point... just draft BPA
Frederik Dichow: Goalies are difficult to predict, but he was really BPA in round 5? Strategically, could not have they waited in round 7 and pick a forward or D they though would be a good selection??? Is he going from Denmark 2nd league to SHL next year?
Jayden Struble: He might be amazing so stone me if thats the case but our scouts seem to love drafting 1-2 US high school players every year... but we always forget about them...
Kieran Ruscheinski: So the AMHL is Alberta's midget AAA league? Maybe he started hockey last year and he's some athletic semi-god ... if he becomes a modern Hal Gill I won't have a problem but even he was lighing up the league he was playing in his draft year
Rafael Harvey Pinard: I don't hate the pick but if they need to secure players from their own backyard to avoid competing with other teams who are interested it's a shame. Also, looks like his big year was last year, so why no one drafted him back then? He exploded and lead his team in points. He's now 20 and it's kind of expected to dominate by that point in juniors?
