Post-Game Talk: Leafs win in SO after giving up another two goal lead

They have the top trainers and dieticians in the country... Stop...

Dumbbells aren't helping for hockey, or barely do. Explosive leg and core training does.
It's crazy the shade that gets thrown at Marner and like this instance, makes very little sense and just highlights the ignorance.

I want the Leafs to win in Boston by shootout, just so people can complain some more.
Game is here.

Marner was mostly irrelevant to my comment. I know that a lot of hockey players have his body type. I just think any guy should have some muscle definition, especially in his twenties.

Right. I meant to say against Boston. Either way, another OT win will spawn a few threads on the main board.

As painful as it is watching our team fail to hit their stride at any point during the opening 1/4 of the season, they have still managed to find results in spite of that poor play. Which is the case for all good teams.

Woller was excellent once again, Mitch was Mitch, and other than that there wasn't much else to talk about.

I will say, I saw a bit more positives last night then I had in previous showings. We had a great 1st period IMO. We controlled the game, got rewarded early, and in all honesty should have gone into that 1st intermission up a couple. But a McCann snipe levels the score and we end up going in tied. We then jump out to that early lead in the 2nd and we just seemed to fall asleep thereafter. Despite all that, Mitch ends up getting his 3rd of the night and putting us up 2 going into the 3rd. What was positive was our start to the 3rd. I actually thought we went out and took charge of that period. It seemingly felt like we finally were prepared to lock things down. A poor gapping on the 3-2 goal, and sloppy play thereafter lead to the eventual OT and shootout frame. But as I said the strong 1st followed by the strong start to the 3rd was one positive I think this group can take away.

Nonetheless, burn the tape, move onto the Bruins

Reactions: JT AM da real deal
Mitchy finally played in front of the puck a few times
Woll was amazing
We got pushed around, again
AM was the highest paid player and was 15th best player on the ice, again,
We are only a couple of ot, shoot out wins from being out of playoffs
It is easy to see that players don't believe is following a system., but also easy to see if they did they could be successful.
Marner has looked a lot more like himself since being paired with Tavares. Not sure what it is but those two complement each other very well and it gives the opposing teams two lines they have to really worry about.

With Matthews his focus seems to be get Matthews the puck, when they're separated he looks to play a little more free.

They try to be too fancy playing with one another. Worked really well earlier on but their play 5on5 has really slowed down since. They rely too much on the third wheel to do all the dirty work for them.

I said it before, I thought the Leafs played their best hockey last season when Matthews and Marner were on separate lines. Robertson looked pretty good with Tavares and Marner also I thought.

Not sure there is enough puck to go around to really be getting all you can out of any of AM-WN-MK together on a line. At some point that line will go off because of talent alone but the parts feel a bit redundant.

Woll and Marner won that game for us. Another blown lead and another game in which we let an inferior opponent off the mat.

We have been very fortunate to bank as many points as we have considering how we've played, but the luck will run out eventually. It's time to shape up if we want to stay in the playoff picture.

I dont think ive been worried about talent its more the game dips when that isn't shining and we feel like we are just coasting.

It's especially entertaining when the two teenage girls are fighting with my wife. That's usually when my son and I take the dogs and exit stage right.

Oh lord. Mrs #2 is Eastern European and has two girls, 18 and 20. That fighting is something else.

I think people are just looking for reasons to complain. The Leafs can be 4 points out of the division lead after Saturday with a game in hand. Whether they win in OT or a shootout, the points still count.

It’s just that this isn’t a sustainable way to succeed. In some ways it’s a good sign that they can collect points despite playing poorly, and I don’t think it’s debatable that they’ve played poorly, often with poor efforts. If they can find a way to turn it on at some point, maybe good things can happen. But, I also don’t think it’s arguable that they’ve not found a way to do that in the playoffs. People would like to see consistent compete levels, and not let inferior teams back into games… more killer instinct.

It’s only been 5 yrs and 20 games….
So on one hand people blame the losses in those 5 years on the "core" not showing up, and then complain about a winning record to start a season where virtually all of those wins are because of those exact same core players showing up? The issues with the current team are in fact completely different from the reasons those prior teams didn't advance.

and yet they are the common denominator.

Morning After thoughts;

- Anytime I see this team up 3-1 I'm reminded once again that they really suck when they're up 3-1.
- The upside of the first point: The Leafs are nothing if not entertaining.

Team needs to add a couple more big fast nasty D men to make a serious challenge in da playoffs .. hopefully Klinberg goes under da knife soon on his hip to help with CAP .. until this occurs this is a 1st or 2nd round exit team .. Woll may win us a round .. good to see Mitch shoot more .. likely surprised Grubauer

I agree with most of this but Nylander going stone cold?!? Matthews had 2 assists and was +1.

C'mon. Nylander... It's been about 3 or 4 games lol.
Guy has been on fire all season and he still looked great this game he just didn't get any bullshit assists.
Can't disagree that I may of exaggerated Nylander going stone cold, however he was pretty much invisible last night.

One goal from him or Matthews and our Leafs likely win that game IN REGULATION.

Just saying.

Is there a worse player in OT then Matthews?
With all that space out there, he should be able to at least score a goal on ever other shift.

He seems to be holding back sometimes. Maybe he worries he might not score and then the other team gets a golden chance on a counter attack.

I totally agree on your assessment of Matthews. At his salary, he needs to be a standout every game.

Assists from him are good, however his salary, including next seasons raise, dictates he should be scoring a goal at a much higher pace.

JMHO.
