Post-Game Talk: Leafs win 5-4 Game 1 of Round 2

They can't help themselves. They feel it's their obligated duty to tone police any opinion they don't like. Typical weak-minded behavior.
No one is policing it, you're just taking it personally that there is light being shone on the trolling that goes on here endlessly. Hitting too close to home, I guess.
We've been making adjustments for years, hasn't done us much good as we always seem to have big problems in the playoffs.
Even after last night's debacle, we're sitting right next to the last two Cup winners for PP% this post season. Before last night, we were clipping at over 35%. Let's not pretend it hasn't been really damn good until last night. Further, two of the best three teams at the power play this post-season are long gone, so it is not the be all and end all. Last night wasn't great, but the power play has been good this post-season.

The Panthers have a great PK (88% before last night and over 90% now). It's going to be tougher this series than last but it's also one game.

No. And that's okay. He has a chance to prove something. I'm confident about his skill level no doubt but he had the #1 spot handed to him on a platter and lost it to a guy who was Florida's back up last year. Doesn't show good progress year to year and seems to get injured at bad times. He has a chance to prove otherwise and I hope he does.
Way too harsh IMO. He wasn't handed anything, and this year looked to be most likely a tandem situation which is exactly what it turned out to be. Stolarz had the better season, but Woll was pretty good himself.

I'd be so much happier if both were healthy, but were in the fortunate situation of having a 1B goalie that's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the average NHL #2 goalie so let's be happy we have Woll, and let's not forget how incredible he was in the playoffs for us a year ago. GLG!!

Definitely do a bit of trolling (it's barely any), definitely not taking it personally though.

I've never been big on all these x stats, 0-5 is that number that matters and a few of those PP's looked absolutely terrible. JMHO.

They're at 27.3% ATM, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't factor in giving up shorties. If you subtract the 2 shorties from the total then the PP% goes below 20. I did this calc in my head so let me know if I'm wrong but that's the way it looks to me and below 20% with most of the time the opponent being Ottawa isn't exactly humming along. It's nowhere near as bad as the last playoffs, but it's not very good either.
I don't love them either, but they tell at least part of the overall picture. I'd agree that last night the PP was less than ideal, and needs to be better as the series goes on, but my point is that the way people are talking is as if we're sitting at <10% for the playoffs.

For what it's worth, giving up shorties is awful and needs to be cleaned up (although I don't think FLA even got a sniff last night on their PK) it does not reduce PP%. They've scored on 27% of their powerplay opportunities in these playoffs, regardless of giving up 2 shorties.

Again, the PP% looks good only because it doesn't factor in shorties, giving up 2 of those to Ottawa is really bad and 0-5 last night is also pretty bad. Don't kid yourself, there is a LOT of room for improvement.

Probably because it's very obvious that half the board doesn't watch the games.
Where are statements like this even coming from?

The GDT's have been fantastic these playoffs, I barely participated in any during the regular season cause they were so f***ing boring with the same rehashed shit over and over again. I'm legitimately struggling to see where all this overwhelming negativity you're seeing is, it's like 1 in 15 posts at best in the active GDT during games.

It hasn't been all bad, not saying it has. Two shorties though, that shouldn't happen and brings the overall PP grade down to maybe a C+ or something. That's better than the F they put up against Boston but still, I think we need to set the bar higher and strive for at least B+ against Florida.

Two keys for us:

1. We need playoff Brick Woll to emerge, and
2. That PP cannot be so poo poo again. Panthers won’t take liberties if we are scoring on the PP.

Maybe not literally handed but it was clearly his for the taking with Stolie signed with the intent to be a backup this year. It just turned out Stolie played a lot better than expected, Woll continued getting injured, and had some cold stretches which deservedly lost him the net in the playoffs and created a 1A/1B situation which like you said is a great predicament to be in. I see it more as a 1B/1B until Woll shows he can be healthier and more consistent in the regular season playing 50+ games and multiple series in the post season. He missed game 7 last year after 3 post season games. Anyway I hope he succeeds and can play the rest of this series like last year but without injury

Stolly was the injured one this year.

Woll had that long stretch he had to backpack the frankly collapsing leaf play that stretch.

No doubt Stolly has had a better season, but I think it's closer than people think.

I thought the starters job was up for grabs myself - the intent was never that Stolarz would be the backup, and I think most people expected a tandem 1A/1B situation which is exactly what happened. Stolarz had the better season so he got to start in the playoffs.

It was closer than people think I agree with that and Woll certainly had good stretches. I think at the beginning of the season most of us were hoping it wouldn't be close and Woll would establish himself as a bonafide proper 1A in this league. If he thrives this series without getting injured unless Bennett does something really stupid again I'll be happy to eat crow

Think the team have been hoping for that too - the last 2 seasons, it's really felt like they've tried to spoonfeed the net to Woll, but injuries and form have prevented him from truly just grabbing it and running away with it now.

Massive chance for him now. Opportunities are moments to be seized.

Exactly well put I just don't like the revisionist history by some. Woll has for a while been seen as a guy with the skills to become an elite number 1 in this league and the Leafs have wanted the same. He's still young enough to figure it out.

This is the only thread I could find. Pretty clear expectation of Woll to start, Stolie to backup, Woll to get injured, Stolie to take over.

I think Woll himself will tell you this is a huge opportunity for him to help establish himself and change the narrative and I would love if he played healthy and well for this entire series.
