You make an excellent point. We do have to take the winning percentage when he is in the lineup into consideration for comparison.Compare that to their record with Matthews
14-8-2 this season
335-177-74 all time.
Maple Leafs Record With Auston Matthews In Lineup | StatMuse
The Toronto Maple Leafs are 335-177-74 with Auston Matthews all-time.www.statmuse.com
You make an excellent point. We do have to take the winning percentage when he is in the lineup into consideration for comparison.
Interesting, the all time winning percentage with him in the lineup is about 57% (335 wins out of 586 games = 57%) The all time win % without him in the lineup is 62% (42 wins out of 67 games = 62%)
The Leafs have a better winning percentage when he is not in the lineup. But to be fair the sample sizes are not equal. Probably need to see a lot more games without him in the line up to be able to say if they are better (higher winning %) over the length of his time with the Leafs.
But this season when he is in the lineup they have won 58% of their games (14 wins out of 24 games). When he is out of the lineup they have won 66% of their games (8 wins out of 12 games).
A+The problem is in many of the games he was playing this season, he probably shouldn't have been. Matthews playing like he was yet the coach feeding him top line minutes and competition was hurting our team.
If you're going to play Matthews when he's not 100%, feed him time on the third line. I don't know why we have to force feed him top line minutes when he's not 100%.
Points percentage would be better, but as you rightly said, the sample sizes are not equal. You make an excellent point. We do have to take the winning percentage when he is in the lineup into consideration for comparison.

A Center for sure, ideally a playmaking type that can defend well, as that would be the perfect center type for Nylander imo.Matt Knies slowing down a bit. December hasn't been kind to his stat-line
Also, that fourth line has been the most effective it's been all season.
Myers received a big boost in ice-time as well. Played more than Tanev and was physical.
Marner-Tavares Chemistry this season preetty gooodd. Better than Matthews-Marner. All three of Marner, Matthews, Nylander should run their own lines. When they are THE GUY on their line, it changes how they play.
Speaking of Nylander, it seems even he cannot elevate Holmberg haha. A trade for a C is needed here
When has Marner been the guy on his line? Hes been the guy on his line in the playoffs last year and looked very bad. He was the guy on a line with Domi and Knies this year and they were very bad. Could he be? I dont know.. we have limited evidence of it. But certainly, the limited evidence we have is he sucks without an elite center.Matt Knies slowing down a bit. Make it happen. Should be goodA Center for sure, ideally a playmaking type that can defend well, as that would be the perfect center type for Nylander imo.
Granlund-Nylander, Tavares-Marner, Matthews-Domi would be 3 absolutely ridiculous playmaker-sniper combinations… then you have 3 power forward left wings to pair with each one in McMann, Knies and Pacioretty to round out the top 9.
I think as the season progresses we will also see Boston and Tampa fall off. It would be nice if Ottawa could continue winning so that they could at least be relevant again. Montreal, Buffalo and Detroit are simply horror shows. At least Montreal can still hide behind the rebuilding excuse. Buffalo and Detroit should be making GM changes yesterday.Leafs are lucky to have Detroit in their division.
Along with Ottawa and Buffalo those three teams are on some of the longest playoffs droughts of all time. Yzerman firing Uncle Fester in attempt to rid the organization of a losing culture is a bit of a joke. Like they're gonna be swimming in winning culture by this time next year.
It's hard to take anything away from a game like this.
The Leafs won when they should have won. Against a terrible Detroit team. If Yzerman really wanted to help them win he should strap the skates on himself and go play.
He'd still be the best player on the team.
Not that I'm complaining about the Leafs making the playoffs every year. But I do wish the division was more competitive. Knowing which four teams are most likely gonna be in the postseason by Christmas makes the rest of the season seem kinda redundant.
The only thing left to be determined by this point is who gets home ice advantage.
The Toronto dilemma. Put him 3rd line the whole NHL knows he is injured.
Looks like another great game from Wolltage
Berube: Best I can do is Matthews with Marner foreverMarner on a 112 point pace.
Keep JT with Marner, it just works.
I’ve posted that they should be split up and there’s always people commenting that they should play together. It’s clear that they are not a good fit togetherBerube: Best I can do is Matthews with Marner forever
Agreed.I’ve posted that they should be split up and there’s always people commenting that they should play together. It’s clear that they are not a good fit together
It really does. And add in the fact that when Matthews is in the lineup, the opposition will probably put their best defensive unit against the Matthews line, allowing Marner to face secondary matchups. Just another reason to have Matty-Marner separated.Marner on a 112 point pace.
