Its like Hockey is a teamsport or something. A average goolie is good when having a good D infront of him. When the D sucks a good goalie look average or bad.

Nice win

I only saw the highlight and thought Willie was lucky and WTH was he doing flipping that puck and chasing it down.
Then read what you guys wrote and realized it was a long shift.
Really think he wanted to flip it in but saw the D losing position and the puck didn’t go as far as he wanted. So he chased it down and ended up scoring a great goal.
It was kind of a weird goal, and not pretty at all like many of Willie's goals are. But in the end, a tired Nylander was able to score on a play that didn't look dangerous at all by somehow outworking/outhustling/outsklilling (take your pick) one of the best Dmen in the NHL. It may appear like a lucky goal to some people but the best players have a way of getting lucky.

I said that was the highlight of the game for me but honorable mention to Jarnkrok - what a goal that was that he scored! With the puck in the CAR zone, he managed to drift back from the net to find open ice, he then called for the puck and when it was passed to him, he immediately sniped it into the top corner. That was just such a beautiful sniper goal, you'd think you were watching someone that scores 40 on a regular basis.

While he may not be the best at running the PP, over the last 5 years Morgan Rielly has averaged the 22nd most minutes on a PP in the NHL for a defenseman, while scoring the 15th highest number of points for a dman during that time. While averaging 2:45 TOI/PP/G he's nearly 30 seconds shy of the average number of minutes/PP/G that the 14 players who have scored more points than he has get/G. On average, Rielly scores .24 points/g on the PP. By comparison, Chris Letang (12th in scoring by a defenseman over the last 5 years) averages .266 points/g on the PP while averaging 37 seconds more PP time/g. Roman Josi, 4th overall: .3 points/g on the PP while averaging 28 seconds more per night.

The real standouts are: Makar (.43 points/g, 1:07 more time), Q. Hughes (.38 and 51 seconds more time), and old man Hedman (.4/game with 36 seconds more...also number 1 during that 5 year period).

Pietrangelo, Suter, Theodore, Chabot, Morrisey, Werenski, Ekblad, Hamilton and Jones: all have fewer points during this time frame, all with a comparable number of games played, all within 20 seconds of TOI (+ or -) save Morrisey who is averaging 29 seconds less/game, having played 9 fewer games than Mo, and sits 17 points behind him @ .19 points/game.

This suggests that the margins are pretty thin unless you've got a real talent on your team. Part of the Morgan Rielly can't contribute on a PP syndrome, is, I believe, largely based on familiarity with the player and hoping for more. As it stands by points and minutes, he's doing pretty darned well in comparison to many in the league.
Great post! I'm so tired of reading about what a useless, overpaid boat anchor Rielly is. The amount of nonsense on this board is staggering.

Where is this parade I keep reading about over and over again at HFBoards we are planning after two wins?

Some posters will just say anything to stay cool with the bashers.
November 20th it starts at Bloor W and Christie. Rumour has it, the big man will make an appearance.

I just reply "We don't need to change the route every year. The only change since 1990 is a stop at Steve Simmons house."

Great second half of the game. We played this weekend with the hustle and urgency we didn’t have on the west coast.

Malgin has really impressed with his speed and tenacity on that fourth line. Still not impressed by ZAR though, I think Steeves would look better on that line.

Keefe finally what some here have been calling for, ie split Marner and Matthews. It doesn’t have to be permanent. He should have done it out west.

Schadenfreude: Enjoyment derived from watching someone else's misfortune, such as Freddie Andersen letting in Willie Nylander's goal.

I confess; I am guilty as charged.
Found myself wondering how that got in, then I must confess, I had a little smile on my face.

Great, gutsy win with everything working against them.

Still don't think Matthews-Nylander works very well together, but credit to Keefe for switching things up to light a spark.
4th line looks great. Malgin has a bunch of jump and adds some offensive creativity to that line.
Tavares looks so rejuvenated this season; arguably the best he's ever looked as a Leaf. Great play by Marner on that goal too.
Loved Nylander on his goal. A big finger to those who spout that he doesn't put in effort. End of a shift, just single-handedly outraces and overwhelms the defenseman.
Kallgren had a good game. We'll need more of that from him while our top 3 goalies are injured.

Nice to get on a roll.

Nick Robertson has 5 points (2 goals) in 7 games now.. nice start for the kid

The offense will never be an issue here with this group. This is the ultimate team to pad numbers with, it's all about the tenders and what they do. They and to some extent our D are dictating where this team ends up. It's good for him though.

Not a terribly entertaining game like Saturday night but still a highly effective road game. To be perfectly honest, last night's game from Kallgren was largely indistinguishable from Leafs' era Freddie Andersen (good thing). He seemed focused on details. It's like he smells a big opportunity. Good for him.

He just turned 26, kind of young for a keeper. It isn't like he's 30 year old trying to prove he's a starter.

  • 1 goal against in both games is awesome.
  • Robertson looked like a legit top 6 guy once he was with Marner. Maybe Marner can teach him how to be effective as a smaller player.
  • Kallgren - wow!
  • Just like that, we're top 10 again.

edit - also we are 3-0 when I make a GDT or pre-GDT with LOTR references :D

Didn't the team acquire all those keepers though?
Isn't that just part of running a team, acquiring assets?

Most teams with talent like ours would have a top goalie prospect long ago. The Leafs can not draft tenders. They should just poach the guys from Ottawa, they're probably Leaf fans anyways.

Matthews moved the puck up to Willy and went to the bench, ending a 1:11 shift.

So the stats are right: assist but no +, as he had left the ice.

It happens a fair bit, which is the biggest objection to +/-.

At 16:21/16:22 Kerfoot, Matthews, Liljegren, and Rielly left the ice, and Holl, ZAR, Kampf, and Brodie got on.

Nylander scored at 16:25. The four other Leafs who were on the ice when he crossed centre were all on the bench when he scored.
Thanks.

Agreed, Leafs haven't had success drafting a healthy tender. Seems, they've hit on injury prone ones though. Is that just bad luck, or is it something the team is doing to these guys?

How many goalies break into the NHL at age 22-23 and are top keepers?

Dubas drafts, 2018 forward, so one strike-out on a 7th. rounder in 2018.
Drafts 2020, 2021, 2022 are too soon to evaluate for keepers.

I think a couple are doing okay in Europe right now, but too soon to know how the current management has done in drafting tenders.

He racks up the points because he just passes it a few meters to his left or right and let’s them work their magic.

As for familiarity, well yeah, since we know that this is all he is capable of it would be wise to try options that would add to the power play (like Sandin and Lilly).

Leafs do play to the level of their competition.

Big weekend for the Leafs and took 4 points from top teams in their Divs.

Both teams looked tired on TV with 3 games in 5 days but nonetheless Canes looked like they tilted us against us most of game .. very impressive performance from our D .. Lily has stabilized Rielly OMG I always liked Lily's speed and strength with Marlies but he is so much stronger on his feet and on da puck now .. he has really lifted our D and I think with brodie our top 2 yesterday .. in another 2/3 years of development he will be a top D in NHL (I think a top 10 D in league) .. we need to lock him up LT this summer if he keeps developing at this rate .. what a MASSIVE difference since he was added to our lineup .. and Holl was fine again when he stays in his lane and takes zero risk .. a Rielly Lily and Muzzy Brodie top 4 could be a 1st round ticket to 2nd round with Gio and Holl to give us 3rd pair minutes and sandin as backup in case of injury

Up front what an outstanding play on one of NHL's best defenders Slavin .. da game changing SPEED and da skill required to flag down a shot 4 ft off ice and da hands and feet to stick check and deflect a puck .. OMG that was WORLD CLASS maybe he and McJesus and MAC only 3 guys in league who can make da play .. watch it again folks you may not see another play like that one all year .. Willy has ALL DA TOOLS .. and much as i don't like Malgin for playoff type hockey I gotta admit he drove pace and tilted ice for us at points during game .. and one last shot out to Mitch wow da hand eye skill and vision required on his play i think it is only him and Marchand and Kuch who can use their edges and hands in small space like that .. anywho Willy Malgin and Mitch deserve special kudos
