Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas says they will give forward Engvall a qualifying offer, but have yet to make a decision on fellow restricted free agent forward Kase
.
Defenceman Rasmus Sandin is also a restricted free agent.

The deadline to make a qualifying offer is July 11.

Engvall should be cheap to sign on a shorter term deal.

I can see a scenario where Kase moves to free agency, doesn't like the offers and opts to stay with the Leafs

Engvall should be brought back (cheap) with the intention to play 4th line minutes/PK and to fill in on 3rd line when injuries arise.

There is zero reason to sign Kase. It was fine last off-season to sign him off the scrap heap and he provided exactly what he was expected to. Often injured and some games he was noticeable but more often than not (when playing) he is a non-factor. His MO coming into the season was often injured and struggles with consistency.

The fact that we need to look for a few Kase like players each off-season is exactly the issue and the flaw with this team and the way it is constructed (and has been since we entered into our "window").

Makes sense as Engvall should be the easier re-signing of the two (term and AAV TBD). Kase can certainly bring the goods when he plays, but...Tough to gauge his worth and $$$ value to the team under such circumstances.

Personally, I'm not so sure Dubas should be qualifying either, but can see why he's more on the fence with Kase.

These guys both of these guys are pure depth, but are coming off pretty reasonable offensive seasons, but do not really bring any of the "sandpaper" that this team truly needs out of their 3rd and 4th line.

Arbitration would likely give these guys $2m+, and that's going to put the Leafs in a tough spot.

I suspect Dubas can justify Engvall a little more considering how good his analytics were, and the fact that he's a competent centre... I'm just not all that excited about spending $2m+ on Engvall.

Engvall is fine and they know what he is (for the most part, some growth still likely). He also earned a pay raise (if slight). If PE is indeed what they want then cool bring him back cheap, but there will be other FAs who can bring something, too.

Either way, if we are talking about 200K differences on a short-term contract, I think stick with the guy you know if he fits your team.

I hope Dubas has a contract (or trade) almost completed because some recent contract comparables with similar numbers got around $3M aav:

Pierre Engvall ??? aav, 78gms 15g 20a

Denis Gurianov: $2.9M aav, 73gms 11g 20a
Jordan Greenway: $3M aav, 62gms 10g 17a
Nick Paul: $3.15M aav, 80gms, 16g 16a

Keeping both at the QO offer price is a no-brainer but yeah you can't be risking $3m on Kase.

Not a fan but it seems 'Lucky' Pete will be back.
Would prefer a total re-vamp of the bottom six, still could happen I suppose.

You qualify Engvall every day of the week and dump him for depth picks if you dont want to keep him. Hes a no brainer to qualify at 1.25M

Not that I'm lobbying for a return to this but Engvall is exactly the type of big guy some average sized tough guy like Wendel Clark or Gary Roberts would randomly grab and pound effectively chasing the guy out of the league. Now this guy is getting treated like a vital cog when players like Johnsson, Kapanen, Brown, etc. weren't treated that way.

I don’t get where you’re coming from. Every top team looks for low cap hit high value players every year. Whether it’s through UFA , ELCs or at the trade deadline. To act like it’s a flaw and only the leafs have to go through that process is actually on a high level of stupid. Tampa literally does it every year. Colorado is going to do it. Florida does it. Pittsburgh has EXCELLED at it, they are probably the masterminds at it.

The only difference between the leafs and some of the other teams I mentioned is that those teams are often able to extend those cheap finds to bigger contracts. However they almost always end up moving them a few years later and end up starting the process again. So what difference does it make if the leafs change those parts yearly or we extend to a contract they probably aren’t worth and then move them later?

Goaltending is a much, MUCH bigger need. Engvall is the kind of guy you look at after you solve your pressing needs. If there is money leftover, sure, go for it.

He needed to be qualified by July 11.
With an office full of AGM's they can look after a few matters of business at the same time.

My point still stands. He's hardly good enough to risk the goalie search over an imminent deadline.

I would be a huge fan of Engval if he would be more physical. He should be ridiculed for being so big and strong, while playing so softly.

Dude should be a beast.

Is your point that they can't do more than one thing at a time?
How much effort do you feel a qualifying offer takes?
We shouldn’t even have a thread discussing it and should be focussed strictly on the goalie situation.

If I was allowed to be an assistant coach on the Leafs. I would have this guy, in three years getting five million a year.

Keefe is not a good coach, nowhere near great.

Give ME, a gift like Engvall? Holy crap.

And give me Mason back, give me a freebie like Tampa got in Perry, and gimme Leivo and Verwhatever his name is.

I carry the cup every year.

I am banking on buying this moribund trio of corporate crap, I am scaling my systems and they are working.

I just want to buy out Bell and Rogers. They suck, at everything.

And the home run jacket? Burneed at center field talk about crap.

I like Kase and I know he’s good buddies with Kampf, but end of the day he’s an injury prone tweener who doesn’t PK. Would rather let Robertson take his spot and potentially flourish.

the only reason not to qualify someone imo is if there would be no trade market for said player. even if you don't want the player if other teams would then you still qualify them and move them for picks/prospects

Makes sense. Engvall is a quality bottom 6er, whose been getting better every year. Tall, rangy, fast, athletic, great defensively and on the PK, drives possession, and becoming decent offensively.

Kase can bring better offence, but not as good in terms of defensive play and possession driving, and much more injury prone. I do like him, solid player when healthy, but there’s a pretty significant chance he’ll be injured for the playoffs.
