I don't believe Mo is telling him to hang back at the blue line - I don't see a forward hanging back like that on other lines.
Might be a case of over doing it - someone should be in the shooting position but this is too far even for Laine - and it's hard to hit a player with a pass when they are that far back.
If there's something out there that supports what you are saying, I'd like to see (or hear) it - but hanging around back there is not something a coach would ask from his sniper.
Our F1- F2-F3 rotation has been quite a bit different this year. I don’t think Maurice is telling Laine to hang out at the blue line, but the F3 in the zone this season pretty much holds down that spot in a lot of situations, more than usual. It was also noticeable with Chef last night as well, at one point KC was working along the end boards with 2 Leafs and Scheifele stayed above the goal line instead of going in to help out. Now there is obviously more than one reason for this, he might have just thought if KC came up with that puck there were 2 Leafs committed down low and he’d get an open shot in the slot, but the pattern this year has clearly not to commit 2 on the puck below the goal line. It’s been noticeable to me that their forecheck rotation has switched from an aggressive 2-1-2 to a more passive 1-2-2. In the past the Jets have always been more aggressive in rotating who attacks the puck depending on where it goes, with F3 going low if the puck is reversed corner to corner, F2 staying in pursuit and F1 sliding back up top. They are just far more passive in switching off and not having cover, it’s clearly by design. I think it has an effect on creating odd man advantages in the offensive zone and players being available in the seams, especially on turnovers.
Laine is often 3rd man in, which leaves him hanging out up top more. I do agree he needs to improve his movement up there though.
Just my take but I think it’s been pretty clear it’s what they are trying to do, along with not engaging the D as much.
