Just my opinion, but in every sport it feels like there are a set number of marquee teams and markets and when they get to the finals or win a championship there’s a real buzz and it energizes and elevates the sport in pop culture. Aka when the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series. Good for the Panthers but that’s not them.
Only the Original Six teams ( and maybe the Flyers or Kings to a lesser extent) can qualify as marquee franchises in the NHL. If one of the Maple Leafs, Bruins, Red Wings, Blackhawks, Canadiens,or Rangers advances to the finals or wins the Stanley Cup, it feels very different than the other teams making it or winning the Stanley cup. The Flyers back to back titles in the mid 1970s brought 2 millions on broad street (philly’s yonge street ) for each parade. When the rangers won in 1994, the media coverage on that team, and the buzz/hype around them was off the charts. Game 7 of Bruins/Canucks (the Bruins won the cup that night ) was the most viewed cup final game in years. The success of the Blackhawks (3 Stanley cups won between 2010 and 2015) rejuvenated hockey fandom in Chicago and created a massive fan base.
Imagine how crazy the media coverage, public interest, buzz/hype, etc would be if the Leafs finally make it to the cup finals, or even better win the cup after multiple decades of pure frustration since 1967. Leafs winning the cup would be as big as the Red Sox triumph in 2004, the 2016 Chicago cubs World Series title (their first title since 1908) or the 2017-18 Philadelphia eagles when it comes to cultural and historical significance, cultural/financial/social impact on the city, meaning to the fanbase, media hype and coverage, and buzz all across the sports world. It would truly be a watershed historical moment in pop culture/hockey/sports history.
Only the NY Knicks ( last NBA Championship was 1973 ) drought and cultural importance to their city is comparable to the Maple Leafs drought and cultural importance to Toronto. New York is the Mecca of basketball just like Toronto is the Mecca of hockey. Just like basketball and the Knicks in New York have deep roots and long history in New York’s social fabric and sports culture, hockey and the Maple Leafs have deep roots and long history in their city’s social fabric and sports culture. They are the biggest source of Civic pride for people here.
I thought about adding the Penguins to that list, but even though they won five Stanley cup titles, in fact they’re still a small market team who came in the first wave of expansion and they only have some prestige because they had three generational and legendary players in their history.( Lemieux, Jagr, and Crosby)
Oilers have Connor McDavid now had Wayne Gretzky before but despite their rich history, legendary players and multiple championships(5 cups), they don’t move the needle in North American sports and pop culture. They’re stuck in the same situation as the Pens.
