Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign RHD John Klingberg (1 year, $4.15M) | UPD 11/23: LTIR

I would love to have a D corps made up of hard nosed, physical defenders who are really solid in their own zone.

Sprinkle in a couple of offensive dmen to join the rush and to be a threat on the PP. That’s my vision of a well built D corps.

I guess that’s the crux of why this seems so bad, how did we get to the point that a guy who, if he has another bad season could realistically end up in Europe or as a piece for Arizona/Chicago to reach the cap floor with, has to give US a shot rather than the other way around?

I think this is an overreaction. He’s had one massive down year on a bet on himself type year and is coming in at about 55% of Morgan Rielly’s salary but has a decent shot of putting up similar points and giving the special teams a new look.

“One of the most reckless defenceman I’ve ever seen, some of the chances he takes are hard to understand”. Mike Russo Wild Athletic beat reporter on the Fan.

This guy legit scares the shit out of me, and it gets worse the more I hear.

“John has got a willingness to get involved in everything, I think that’s what special about him,” Ruff said. “I don’t think he’s taken a pounding. I think that he puts himself in there, he battles everybody, he’ll take a hit to make a play. You can talk to him about `don’t go in there,’ but he’ll just say I’m going in there to get it, I’m going to make a play.

“John was one of the main reasons I came here. I heard great things about him. I coached against him a little bit because when I was in Tampa we always saw them twice a year. But he just has elite skills. Right now he’s playing fantastic hockey. Take it back to last year in the bubble, John was our best defenseman. He competed hard, he moved the puck. Everybody [was] talking about Miro [Heiskanen]. Listen, Miro’s a great young defenseman, and he is in his own right. But sometimes Miro gets all the attention and John doesn’t get as much as he deserves. But right now John is playing great hockey, he’s moving the puck very well.. He’s doing everything you want your elite defenseman to do. We feel very fortunate to have two in Miro and John being elite players like that.”

I really feel like TOR fans have found their new scapegoat/whipping boy before he even has his first practice with TOR.

It's a shame. Kris Versteeg said some good things about him and thought it was a good signing by TOR. I'll post what he said on The Fan590 later.

This.

I want to see what he can do. I have a hunch he will fit nicely with McCabe on our 2nd pairing.

I’m just so glad Holl is gone, and it feels like his skill set is an improvement.

With Holl gone, really hoping Liljegren gets a legitimate shot to stick, including time on the PK. If he feels his coach has his back, he could develop nicely.

I would take Lindy Ruff and Rick Bowness in a heartbeat over Keefe as Head Coach.

If Leaf fans like "The Rover" Tyson Barrie while he was in Toronto then they're going to love John Klingberg.

When he is on the ice its going to be entertaining at both end of the ice.

Over the course of this last 4 seasons he is a -78 +/- combined. :surrender

But look at those playoff totals in 2019-20 when the Stars went to the SCF .. 26 games 4-17-21 points :DD

So you take the good with the real bad and hope it averages out to a positive outcome.

He never meshed in Bowness’ system and Anaheim was terrible, so while you obviously can’t disregard -78 I don’t believe one should be too worried about it either.

In 21 games (regular season and playoffs) with Minnesota to end last year he was a +5

It’s on our coaching staff now to put Klingberg in situations that maximize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. And of course on Klingberg himself to improve every day. But even still his style will lend itself to some mistakes. It’s probably a good trade off though for us, because we have firepower to put around him and our offensive contribution from the backend the last couple years has been abysmal.

I get people not liking the deal and we will never know for sure, but it seems pretty obvious to me that Sandin asked to be moved or had a standing agreement from his difficult RFA negotiations that if he’s not going to be a regular he’d be traded (which he wouldn’t be after McCabe and Schenn were added)

I’m not overly concerned about what Sandin may become as I think he’s a pretty flawed player, but I’d have rather let things play out. I think if we had just opted to move him without a trade request we would have targeted a different return.

Reilly, Klingberg and Lili on different pairings for puck movement. Two on the right, one on the left. One guy out there all the time.
